Urban Divine Doctor Descends the Mountain

Chapter 1406: Chapter 1405: Meeting an Old Friend in a Foreign Place

The man standing in front of him looked to be a few years older than Lin Dong, with handsome features, dressed in a suit.

He was Lin Dong’s childhood friend from the village, having grown up together with Lin Dong.

His name was Lin Yu, three years older than Lin Dong, and they had been close before.

However, when Lin Dong was in his first year of high school, Lin Yu had tested into a university in the Capital City, and since then, he seldom returned to the village.

During summer and winter holidays, it was said that he worked diligently to earn his tuition fee because his family’s financial situation was similar to Lin Dong’s, quite poor, so he had to rely on himself.

This also meant that the last time Lin Dong saw him was eight years ago.

When Lin Dong went back to his hometown for the Lunar New Year before, he had talked with the villagers about him. They mentioned that ever since Lin Yu graduated from university in the Capital City, he had found a job there and had been striving hard.

At that time, when Lin Dong was still cultivating in the mountains, Lin Yu had returned home for the New Year once, and the elders all said he was doing quite well, with a good job in the Capital City, and had apparently found a local girl.

But during that New Year visit, Lin Dong naturally didn’t get the chance to see him.

Lin Dong hadn’t expected to bump into Lin Yu here.

He was also very surprised; meeting an old acquaintance in a foreign place was indeed something that made one happy.

”Brother Yu, I can’t believe you’re here, we haven’t seen each other for so many years.” Lin Dong excitedly grabbed Lin Yu’s arm, his joy evident.

The other party was clearly happy too, ”Dongzi, I went home a few years ago for the New Year, and heard that you failed your College Entrance Examination and then left the village. What did you do after that?”

”How have you been these years?”

Lin Dong laughingly said, ”After I failed the College Entrance Examination, I went to the mountains and learned some Traditional Chinese Medicine from an old Taoist. I only came down from the mountains last year; I’ve been doing alright these years.”

”And you? How are you doing now? This year, I stayed in the village for the New Year. I went to visit those elders in the village. We talked about you at that time, and everyone said you’re doing pretty well...”

A bitter smile appeared on Lin Yu’s face as he said, ”For us from the countryside, although we’ve studied a bit, it’s not easy to do that well in a place like the Capital City.”

”I just have a decent job and get by day to day.”

”By the way, Dongzi, what are you doing here? How come you’re in the Capital City?”

Lin Dong didn’t know how to explain to Lin Yu why he had come to the Capital City, so he made up an excuse.

”Brother Yu, I’ve come to the Capital City to look for a job... haha...”

”As for coming to this Traditional Chinese Medicine Pharmacy, I came to get some medicine.”

Upon hearing this, Lin Yu also sighed and said, ”It’s not easy to find a job in the Capital City, especially if you don’t have academic qualifications...”

Saying this, he glanced at Lin Dong, cautious not to injure Lin Dong’s self-esteem, then suddenly he said:

”If you don’t mind, you can come work in my shop. I’m planning to resign and open a restaurant.”

Lin Dong laughingly said, ”Thank you for your kind offer, Brother Yu, but Brother Yu, weren’t you studying computer science and working as a programmer? Why quit a good job and suddenly decide to open a restaurant?”

”Haha...” Lin Yu laughingly said, ”It was my wife’s idea. She thinks that me working as a programmer for a fixed salary won’t make much money, so she suggested I resign and make a go of it.”

”By the way, my wife works right here. She’s a salesclerk in this pharmacy, and I came to pick her up after work.”

As he said this, Lin Yu suddenly pointed behind Lin Dong and said, ”Your sister-in-law is coming.”

Lin Dong turned his head and looked behind him, seeing a made-up woman, holding a bag and walking towards them.

After she arrived in front of Lin Yu, she complained, ”Didn’t I tell you to come at five-thirty? Why are you late?”

Lin Yu scratched his head and said with a lowered voice, ”Sorry, Xiao Jing, there was a traffic jam on the way, I’m a few minutes late.”

”You have no sense of time. How can you achieve anything great?” Lin Yu’s girlfriend, Ai Jing, scolded him with glaring eyes.

As for Lin Yu, he kept his head down and dared not say much while being lectured.

At that moment, she finally noticed Lin Dong and couldn’t help but say to Lin Yu, ”Lin Yu, who is this person?”

Lin Yu hurriedly introduced him to her, ”This is a friend who grew up with me in our village, his name is Lin Dong. You can call him Dongzi.”

Having said that, she hurriedly introduced her to Lin Dong as well.

”Dongzi, this is your sister-in-law, her name is Ai Jing.”

Lin Dong showed her a polite smile and called out, ”Hello, sister-in-law!”

”What sister-in-law? Don’t just call that randomly,” Ai Jing pouted, then said to Lin Yu, ”What did I just hear you say about having him work in our restaurant? What’s that about?”

Lin Yu quickly explained, ”Dongzi came to the Capital City to find work, and seeing as his academic qualifications aren’t high, I wanted to help him out a bit by letting him work in our restaurant. It’s also so that he has a place to land on his feet, and we would pay him a normal salary...”

”Stop, just stop!” Ai Jing refused outright,

”Who gave you the right to make such decisions? If you just casually bring in those refugees from your village to work in our restaurant, how are we going to make money?”

Lin Yu hurriedly explained, ”Xiao Jing, you know it’s hard to find work without high academic qualifications. Think of it as helping out a brother, please? I’m begging you.”

However, even so, Ai Jing still pouted and said, ”What does his difficulty finding work have to do with you? You can’t even take care of yourself, so what business do you have taking care of others?”

”Have you saved up enough for the bethrothal gift? Have you bought me a house? Have you bought a car? You have nothing, yet you want to help others?”

Hearing them nearing an argument, Lin Dong quickly said to Lin Yu,

”Brother Yu, thanks for your kind thoughts. It’s okay, let’s not talk about the work thing. We haven’t seen each other for so long, how about we go have a meal together later?”

Lin Yu, feeling guilt for not being able to secure the job for Lin Dong, cast a sorry glance at him.

Then he nodded and said, ”Okay, later I’ll treat you to Peking duck! Peking duck in the Capital City is unique...”

However, as soon as he said this, Ai Jing scolded, ”Eat, eat, eat, that’s all you think about!”

”With the money you have to treat people to meals, why don’t you have money to buy me jewelry? A few days ago, you let me wear a gold bracelet worth more than twenty thousand. When it was time to pay, you couldn’t afford it. Made me lose dignity along with you...”

Lin Yu’s face turned red, and he said softly, ”All my money, isn’t it all invested in that restaurant?”

Seeing this, Lin Dong quickly said, ”Brother Yu, let me treat you and your sister-in-law. It’s on me.”

Ai Jing gave him a dismissive look, how could she possibly care about Lin Dong inviting her? In her eyes, Lin Dong and her fiancé Lin Yu both came from the same countryside, and without academic qualifications, surely had only some money in their pockets.

A dinner invitation, how good could it be? Going to eat at some street stall, she’d rather not eat at all.

Moreover, she worried about what if, after accepting this meal from Lin Dong, he insisted on them helping him find a job?

She definitely didn’t want that.

She shook her head directly and refused, ”Lin Yu and I have things to do. Our restaurant is opening in two days and we’re very busy. When do we have time to go out to eat with you?”

Saying that, she took Lin Yu’s arm, ready to leave.

Lin Yu, helpless, knowing that dinner wasn’t going to happen tonight,

quickly said to Lin Dong with an apologetic tone, ”Dongzi, let’s exchange contact information, and we can plan another time.”

Lin Dong nodded and they exchanged contact information.

Afterward, Lin Yu was dragged off by his girlfriend Ai Jing.

Even then, Lin Dong could still hear the warning words Ai Jing said to Lin Yu as they walked away.

”Lin Yu, I’m warning you. Don’t go fraternizing with those people from your village and don’t try to help them or get them jobs in our restaurant, or else don’t blame me if I lose my temper!”

”What good are those people to your future? They have neither family background nor academic qualifications; coming to the city, they’re just worms, no different from the rats and bugs in the city sewers.”

Lin Yu hung his head, meekly saying nothing.
