Lingering Doting Marriage: Big Boss, Little Sweet Heart

Chapter 2167: Chapter 2176: I Only Have 4,500, Take It or Leave It

Joanne Harrison didn’t want to hear anything anymore; her heart had already grown cold after repeatedly being asked for money. As for her mother’s explanations, she had become numb and calm about it.

”I’ll answer the phone, you go back first.”

There seemed to be a party on the beach tonight, and she needed to help out.

Plus, where they were standing wasn’t far from the beach. If someone overheard her arguing with her family and it got back to the manager, she could lose her job.

The middle-aged woman saw that Joanne really didn’t have the 15 thousand dollars and suddenly showed a panicked expression. She initially thought Joanne must have money, even if not 15 thousand, at least 10 to 12 thousand. She could then add the 3 to 4 thousand she saved to make up the 15 thousand. She didn’t expect that Joanne really didn’t have that much money, only 4,500. Her heart tightened as she thought of those ferocious people who had been coming to their door for days, and the threats they left behind. She immediately clung to Joanne’s arm like grabbing onto a lifeline, ”I can’t go back. If I go back, what will happen to your brother? Those people said if we can’t gather enough money by tomorrow, they’ll chop off your brother’s hand. Joanne, can’t you think of another way?”

”They said they would chop off my brother’s hand?” Joanne didn’t expect them to be so ruthless, leaving such a threat. She comforted herself as well as the middle-aged woman, ”Impossible, they wouldn’t dare. This is a society governed by law. If they do that, they’d go to jail. They’re just trying to scare you.”

”It’s true! These people aren’t ordinary people; they’re loan sharks! There’s nothing they won’t do. If they don’t get the money by tomorrow, they really will chop off your brother’s hand! They came to our house before and threw a human finger in front of your brother, saying it was from the last person who failed to repay on time. Joanne...”

”How did he get involved with high-interest loans? Doesn’t he usually gamble with his friends?” Joanne didn’t know the full story yet. When she got the call last night, she thought her brother had been tricked by his usual group of bad friends, only now realizing he not only lost money but also got involved with high-interest loans.

”It was his friends who took him there... Your brother... Your brother initially said he wouldn’t go, but his friends said that place was interesting and that they had made a lot of money there. Your brother thought it wasn’t easy for you, a girl, to support us, so he wanted to take a chance. If he won some money, you wouldn’t have to give us money every month. That way, you could ease up a bit. He also said he wanted to win money to buy you a bag, so you could go to work with a nice bag like ordinary girls, instead of using fakes. Your brother said that when you were kids, you’d often play house together, and he promised he’d buy you pretty clothes and bags when he grew up. He always remembered.”

Joanne knew full well these were stories her mom made up, or perhaps her brother was scared and said nice things to get her to pay. Her heart still clenched a bit. Tightening her lips, she shook her head, ”I don’t have that much money. Maybe you should call the police.”

”They said if we dared to call the police, they’d run your brother over with a car...” The middle-aged woman’s eyes were red as she cried, ”Joanne, I remember you said your manager likes you. Why don’t you ask your manager for a loan?”
