Reborn with a Space: Building a Fortune Amidst Famine

Chapter 1668: Simple Living in 1668

What Yuanyuan was making were pancakes and wild vegetable soup, which were quick to prepare.

”My young woman has such skills.”

Yuanyuan smiled and sat to the side.

Su Wanshan devoured his food ravenously. He ate up all the food.

”You two just live here peacefully. We can go back after a year or so.”

Yuanyuan had no objections. Having time-traveled here, she had no ambitions for anything. Such a calm life wasn’t bad.

After Su Wanshan left, the siblings felt even more at ease.

Yuanyuan enjoyed this kind of life, as she had lived her previous life in a similar way.

The village head had always been watching them. It was rare to see them come out, but over time, he felt more relieved.

One day, the door was knocked on, ”Nephew, do you know how to write? There is a funeral in the village, could you help write something?”

Of course, this kind of thing wouldn’t be refused. Although they hadn’t planned to fully integrate with the locals, they would still help when needed, to the best of their ability.

Su Xing went over, and after a while, Yuanyuan also followed to take a look.

Arriving there, she squinted her eyes and could actually see ghosts? Was this her supernatural ability? What use was it to see ghosts? She had no desire to overturn clouds and rain, or move mountains and fill seas.

When there’s a funeral in the village, all families would come to help, otherwise, no one would assist in your family’s future events.

Su Xing was writing elegiac couplets on the side, while Yuanyuan noticed no one was writing the gift registry, so she sat down to help.

She thought her calligraphy wouldn’t be up to par, but to her surprise, as soon as she picked up the pen, she felt it.

Seeing the characters she wrote were strong and powerful, she felt it was quite good to have such skills.

”Nephew, we need to carve a tombstone. Could you write it out so the craftsman can carve it?”

Yuanyuan didn’t know what should be written on a tombstone, ”Su Xing, you do it.”

When erecting the grandmother’s tombstone, she hadn’t paid attention.

Unexpectedly, she saw a Ghost Messenger come over? Wow, it looked nothing like in the paintings, neither ugly nor fierce.

The Ghost Messenger was also startled, thinking that this one adapted well here and would report it back to those in the Underworld who didn’t leave.

They worked until midnight before the siblings returned home.

Because of this event, they gained respect in the village.

”Su Xing, I’m going to the county town to buy some eggs or something, we’re out at home.”

”Sister, let me go.”

”I just want to go out for a walk.”

Su Xing knew his sister wouldn’t take him along but still asked.

”I’m going alone.”

”Sister, I also want to go for a stroll.”

Yuanyuan, feeling helpless, said, ”Alright, but in the town, let’s do our own thing.”

Su Xing drove, while Yuanyuan laid in the cart, finding it quite comfortable.

Upon reaching the county town, Yuanyuan left on her own. She just wanted to take some grain and oil from the space.

She bought a basket of eggs and also considered buying a chicken, but since it was live and she had to kill it herself later, she decided against it.

Watching the hustle and bustle of people, she felt like she was just people-watching.

She went into a bookstore without any particular aim, just browsing around. Not being familiar with the language here, she would unconsciously write things down.

She recognized the characters in Su Xing’s books.

She finally picked a few novels and some writing supplies to nurture her spirit back home.

After coming out, she saw a noble. How did she know? Because his attire was luxurious, completely different from ordinary people.

In a place, one must follow the local rules. In the strictly hierarchical ancient times, being killed could be in vain, so better to avoid trouble.

The man staring at Yuanyuan said nothing.

Yuanyuan thought she better quickly find Su Xing and return. Best not to trouble oneself when facing someone formidable.

Su Xing bought some grains and felt at ease seeing his sister coming over.

”There’s a stall selling baked flatbreads over there. Sister, do you want some? They smell alright.”

”Alright, I’ll go buy some.”

Looking at the dry flatbreads, Yuanyuan wanted to ask Su Xing what’s so good about them. Couldn’t she just bake them at home?

But she still bought three pieces to taste the local flavor.

”Sister, I saw someone selling sheep.”

”Buy one to take back, so we can drink goat milk later.”

Su Xing blushed, ”How do you drink milk?”

Yuanyuan glared at Su Xing, ”Why not drink it? It’ll help you grow taller.”

”I don’t want to; that’s not something a gentleman would do.”

”Nonsense, what’s gentlemanly? Don’t be so pedantic.”

Su Xing couldn’t argue with his sister and bought a milk-producing sheep to take home.

Yuanyuan saw Su Xing’s reluctant face and thought of making something delicious to tempt him at home.

With the sheep, their speed naturally slowed, and they returned home in the afternoon.

Back home, the first thing Yuanyuan did was milk the sheep and then boil it. Before long, the aroma of goat milk filled the air, tempting indeed.

”Su Xing, time to eat.”

Each had a bowl of goat milk, eating with flatbread.

Su Xing hesitated and ended up not drinking it. Although it smelled nice and his sister enjoyed it thoroughly, he just couldn’t bring himself to drink what he felt was animal milk for humans.

Seeing Su Xing truly not drinking, Yuanyuan used it to mix dough, eggs, brown sugar, white flour, and yeast, steaming portions in bowls for the evening.

Su Xing was reading but was so tempted by the indescribably attractive aroma that he couldn’t concentrate.

Yuanyuan was taking the steamed dishes out of the pot, arranging more than ten bowls on the table.

”Try it, I think it’s better than any pastry.”

”Sister, how did you make this?”

”Just eat it, won’t you?” she said, handing him a piece.

Yuanyuan knew that here they used sourdough for fermentation, using ash if lacking alkali, the acid-base neutralization method resulted in flavors that couldn’t compare to hers, which would have a sour taste.

Su Xing took one bite and couldn’t stop, eating three in a row before turning her down.

”Delicious, isn’t it?”

”Sister, did it have goat milk in it?”

”Yes, otherwise, where does the aroma come from?

Su Xing, I know what you’re thinking, but I think you should be more open-minded. Don’t be too stubborn; people must know how to adapt.

The Saint was also human, and even he made mistakes at times. I believe anything good for one’s health is valuable, so don’t overthink it.”

Su Xing said nothing. However, he drank the goat milk the next day.

The siblings continued living leisurely like this. Ten days later, Su Wanshan came again, bringing some Silver and coarse rice for them.

This time, tasting the steamed cakes made by his daughter, they were so delicious he took the leftovers with him.

Every ten days, he would visit and take some steamed cakes back.

By autumn, Yuanyuan told Su Xing to buy some grains from the village. She would pay fairly but was just seeking something fresh.

When the first snow came, Su Wanshan arrived too.

”Yuanyuan, Su Xing, we can leave here to go back.”

”Dad. Is it safe in the Capital?”

”Yes, the new emperor has ascended the throne, and I’ve been reassigned back.”

”Dad, when are we leaving?”

”Tomorrow, Su Lin will come to pick you up. We don’t need to take anything from here back.”
