Reborn with a Space: Building a Fortune Amidst Famine

Chapter 394: 394 confirmed

There was no objection from the woman’s side about getting engaged the day after tomorrow, mainly because Yanli was really eager to go back. The spring planting was so important, of course, it couldn’t be delayed.

Now the engagement was just a family gathering to have a meal and have some fun.

Zhou Yongbing sat beside Yanli, ”Xiao Li, we’ll go to the department store later, and you can pick a watch for yourself.

We’ll also buy a bicycle together. It’s just that the radio at home was only bought two years ago, so can we skip buying a new one?”

”Alright.” I really needed a watch. I originally planned to buy one this year, but I kept putting it off. So, I let it go.

Now I don’t have to buy it myself; I never thought I’d be getting married so soon.

Everything was already discussed. It’s now up to the adults, so they went off to the department store.

Yanli first picked out a watch worth three hundred and sixty yuan. The one Zhou Yongbing wanted to buy had already been sold, so adding sixty yuan was enough.

”Xiao Li, let’s go buy a bicycle.”

”Actually, I don’t know how to ride a bicycle yet.”

”No worries, I’ll teach you. It’s easy to learn.”

They chose a women’s bicycle, so the two big items were ready.

”Xiao Li, let me buy you a couple of outfits.”

”Clothes? Ready-made?”

”Yes, I brought cloth coupons. I also want to buy you a pair of leather shoes.”

”Let me check out the leather shoes, and if I like them, I’ll buy them. But we can skip the ready-made clothes; we can just look at them. I can make them myself, no need to waste money.”

”Buying ready-made clothes saves you trouble.”

”What’s the trouble in making them? With that money, it’d be better to buy a sewing machine - that’s something I’ve been wanting for a long time, but I just couldn’t bear to buy one.”

Since it’s a once-in-a-lifetime wedding, I decided to splurge and bring a sewing machine, which would be used often in the future.

”I have a sewing machine coupon, I’ll buy it.”

Yanli shook her head, ”I have money, let me handle it myself.”

”Xiao Li.”

”You don’t have to say anything; consider it part of my dowry.”

”I can spend the money, and it can still be considered your dowry.”

”It’s not the same, don’t worry.”

Since that was the case, they went to the second floor to look at clothing first. Zhao Yanping really didn’t like those styles.

Then they got fabric for making three outfits, which was just slightly more expensive than a set of ready-made clothes.

Only then did they go to look at leather shoes, and she really liked a pair.

”But even if I buy them now, I can’t wear them. It’s so cold, I wouldn’t wear something like this.”

”Save them for later.”

”Then I’ll wait to buy them until later. Maybe there’ll be even better styles.”

That way, the two really spent a lot of money at the department store and bought a lot of things.

When they got home, Zhou Yongbing stayed for dinner.

Mrs. Zhang and Zhao Yanping were quite happy seeing all the things the couple bought.

”Brother-in-law, could you get the sewing machine this afternoon?”

”Bought the sewing machine?” Zhao Yanping asked with a smile.

”Yes, I bought it as my dowry.”

”That’s great, just have your brother-in-law deliver it to the Zhou family?”

”Sure, it’ll be easier for both of them.”

It really didn’t matter what others thought; there was no need to deliver it on the wedding day itself.

After lunch, Zhou Yongbing and Zhang Fusheng pushed the cart to the department store. The sewing machine was still quite heavy. Using a cart made things easier.

Mr. and Mrs. Zhou were at work, so the two directly placed it in Zhou Yongbing’s room.

”Brother-in-law, do you think there won’t be any issues over at the farm?”

”There won’t be. That director is a sensible person. Just tell him that you’ll find a way to get them a truckload of fertilizer every year.”

”Alright. I got it. The day after our wedding, we’ll take the train back. Xiao Li is in such a hurry.”

”Fine, but I think Xiao Li must have a lot of grain, which you won’t be able to bring back.”

Zhou Yongbing hadn’t thought about this yet. It’s rare for people to sell their grain these days, so these would inevitably be brought back.

”Let the two of us inquire, see if we can sort out a truckload of fertilizer. That way, you can drive back.”

”That’s a good idea. I’ll ask my classmate. I haven’t asked him for favors before.”

”Better discuss it with Xiao Li first, see what she thinks.”

They hurried back again.

Yanli also realized that she really had a lot of things, not just grains, but also cotton, which couldn’t actually be sold.

”If they can get fertilizer, Director Feng would certainly be willing. Let alone one truck, he’d be happy with even ten trucks.”

”Alright, I’ll ask my classmate; I haven’t asked him before.” And Zhou Yongbing excitedly ran off.

”Xiao Li, won’t Director Feng think we’re taking advantage?”

”Taking advantage? How is this taking advantage? Don’t worry, big sis. Director Feng definitely won’t mind, plus I’ll explain everything to him.”

No need to do good deeds and still leave people dissatisfied.

The next day, Zhao Yanping, Mrs. Zhang, and Yanli came to the department store again to buy quilt and mattress covers.

Four sets of greeting gifts required quite a bit of fabric; fortunately, Mrs. Zhang was always meticulous in her daily life.

Yanli felt quite embarrassed, using up two years’ worth of fabric coupons from others.

Halfway, they passed by the post office entrance and suddenly remembered she hadn’t written a letter to Yuanyuan to tell her about the wedding.

She went in to buy stamps, and envelopes. She started writing a letter as soon as she got home.

There were many things she wanted to tell Yuanyuan, including her thoughts on Zhou Yongbing and her plans.

Also, the land would be handed over to Mr. Li after they get back.

Everything was detailed. Looking at the five full sheets, Yanli smiled.

After lunch, she dropped the letter into the mailbox.

Imagining Yuanyuan’s shocked reaction upon learning about her marriage, especially knowing her husband was Zhou Yongbing.

Since there was no rush for the quilts, in the afternoon, Zhao Yanping worked on filling cotton; a quilt needed five jin, and a mattress two jin. This was already very thick for gifts.

On the engagement day, Zhang Fusheng’s family and Yanli went to the Zhou family early in the morning.

The Zhou family’s three daughters also returned today, and they all came with their families.

They were very curious about this sister-in-law, especially the eldest who had heard high praise about her from her husband.

Finally meeting her, the three sisters were relieved. When assessing someone, it’s mainly in their eyes.

This young woman’s eyes were clear and honest, clearly a sensible person.

Mrs. Zhou held Yanli’s hand and introduced her to her three daughters.

Yanli greeted them politely, and overall, the Zhou family was quite satisfied.

The engagement banquet was assisted by someone; there were three tables in total.

Before the meal, a small ceremony took place. Mrs. Zhou gifted Yanli a pair of gold bracelets, gold earrings, a gold necklace, and a gold ring.

These were quite a lot, and now the highest quality gold was worth eight yuan at most; these items together surely added up to ten taels.
