Reborn with a Space: Building a Fortune Amidst Famine

Chapter 359: 359 Unexpected Surprises

After dinner, Xu Hongbing started preparing the cart to load the grain. The big items should be moved today. This would make things easier tomorrow.

Besides, the house was well tidied, and the little sister-in-law was a neat and efficient person. So moving over wouldn’t be much trouble.

After Yanli finished lunch, she went to her eldest brother’s house. Since she was moving, she had to let both her eldest and second brothers know.

”Xiao Li, have you finished moving your house?”

”Yeah, it’s just things like grain. It’s close by, so it’s pretty quick.”

”Why didn’t you come to eat at our place? It’s not easy cooking alone.”

”It’s okay, I can cook a bit more for myself.”

”Xiao Li, you’re the only one at home. If anything comes up, just let us know.”

”Sister-in-law, don’t worry about me. Besides, there’s Mr. Li and Second Sister.”

Sun Yun didn’t say anything more. The little sister-in-law had her own mind.

Yanli got on the kang, and Xiao Ling played with the little sister. The mother and daughter sat on the kang eating dried sweet potatoes.

”Xiao Li, I saw Xiang Zhiqiang going to Zheng Lanying’s house the other day.”

”Sister-in-law, let’s not pay attention to that disgusting person. I wonder how my elder sister is doing now?”

”Actually, I think that Zhang Fusheng is pretty decent. Besides, your elder sister can’t always be so unlucky, right?”

”Yeah, I’ll visit my elder sister this year.”

”Xiao Li, you’re not young anymore. What kind of family do you want to marry into?”

”Haven’t thought about it yet, and I’m not in a hurry. I can support myself. Why bother getting married?” Yanli said nonchalantly.

After marriage, there would be the elderly above and children below. You’d be serving them, not as free as being on your own. Why bring trouble to yourself?

Sun Yun listened to her sister-in-law’s carefree words and felt a toothache. This girl was already eighteen, quite mature for here.

”Xiao Li, this isn’t right.”

”Sister-in-law, I just haven’t met the right person yet. Don’t worry, you and my eldest and second brothers can relax.”

Sun Yun cursed Xiang Zhiqiang in her heart. If it weren’t for him, Xiao Li wouldn’t be so resistant to marriage.

Yanli saw that her sister-in-law wanted to continue the conversation, so she quickly got off the kang, put on her shoes, and went home.

This was serious. The sister-in-law kept persuading her to settle down, but she really didn’t have that in mind.

Actually, she was speaking the truth, she really hadn’t met someone she liked.

Saying it like this was also perfunctory, she hadn’t thought about what kind of person to find yet.

Second Sister liked Tan Shaoting, but from the first sight of him, she didn’t feel any attraction.

He was good-looking, but she just didn’t like him.

Initially, she thought Xiang Zhiqiang was a sincere and reliable person, but it turned out he was a complete scoundrel.

She looked down on Xu Hongbing even more. Although he was also quite handsome, his silent demeanor was too much for her, and besides, he was too clever.

If she ever got married in the future, she would never find someone smart. She was too dull, fearing she’d even help count the money after being sold. Just thinking about it was depressing.

So, as she looked around, there wasn’t anyone she liked.

Not yet home, she saw Second Brother-in-law driving the cart home; she had no choice but to help.

”Xiao Li. You really don’t need to help, I can handle this little stuff myself.”

Seeing he really didn’t need her, Yanli happily went home.

The next morning, Zhao Xiaojing sent her son to her sister, and the couple officially started moving house.

After the lunar new year, life seemed to pass quickly. Every household was selecting seeds, as this was the hope for the entire year.

This year, Yanli had twenty acres of wheat, twenty acres of corn, and ten acres of cotton. She planted some sweet potatoes and potatoes on the edges for herself.

While things were busy on this side, life was smooth and steady for Zhao Yanping here.

Zhang Fusheng was away for almost twenty days a month while she stayed at home taking care of the elderly and children. Usually, she made shoes.

The supply and marketing cooperatives here also collected them, so she could earn some money this way.

Without an education, it was hard to find a job, so she just did what she could. Mrs. Zhang was very satisfied with this daughter-in-law, who never wandered outside. Even when she went to the cooperative, she quickly came back, much better than the previous daughter-in-law.

Now that the new year was over, school started in Xinhua District. The three of them spent most of their time together.

”Xiao Ping, don’t keep working all the time. Take a break.”

”Mom, it’s okay, I can’t sit still. If I were on the farm, it would be time to select seeds.”

”Xiao Ping, the work on the farm must be very tiring, right?”

”It’s okay. You get used to it. If I just sit around, I feel uncomfortable. Mom, what should we plant in our yard?”

”Potatoes, string beans, and eggplants.”

”Alright, I’ll till the ground in a few days when it warms up.”

Mrs. Zhang kept an eye on Zhao Yanping’s daily life and noticed that since she had come here, she hadn’t had any time off.

”Xiao Ping, is everything normal at home?”

Yanping paused her shoe sewing. ”I get it every month, but if I count, it’s now been twice that it hasn’t come.”

”Shall we go check with the doctor tomorrow?”

”Mom, it’s okay. I don’t like going to the hospital.”

”Xiao Ping, I’m not rushing you or blaming you for not having children, but what if you are? Whenever the son is back, the couple is very affectionate. It’s only natural for the elderly to consider that possibility.”

”Mom, the doctor said there’s a good chance I won’t have more children.” Yanping said with sorrow, for what woman doesn’t wish to have more of her own children?

”Xiao Ping, let’s visit the hospital. Regardless of the situation, without children, you’ve already missed it twice.”

Seeing the concern on the elder’s face, Yanping couldn’t bear to refuse.

”Okay, I’ll go to the hospital and have it checked.”

”Dress Hai Yan warmly, and the three of us will go together.”

”Mom, you should have a check-up too.”

”Alright, I will. There’s an old doctor at the hospital with excellent skills.”

The three of them reached the hospital. There were quite a few people waiting for treatment, and after a long wait, Yanping felt like leaving.

Finally, it was their turn. The three of them entered the room together, and the old doctor inquired about the situation and checked Yanping’s pulse.

He switched to the other hand, ”Comrade, you might be pregnant, but it’s still early to confirm. Come back next month.”

Yanping thought she was hearing things. She looked at the old doctor in disbelief.

”Doctor Xing, did you say my daughter-in-law might be pregnant?” Mrs. Zhang asked excitedly.

”Yes, it’s possible, but not certain yet. Come back next month to confirm. In the meantime, be cautious.”
