Chapter 562: Chapter 562: The Merciless Grand Elder of the Evil Spirit Church

”A special-type beast?” The alluring woman raised an eyebrow, and her eyes gradually turned serious. ”Are you sure?”

As an elite member of the Evil Spirit Church, she naturally knew what special-type beasts represented. They possessed terrifying power beyond the ordinary world, and very few humans could stand against them.

The totem of the Evil Spirit Church, the Sky Serpent, was one such special-type beast. Other than the church leader, no one in the entire church could defeat it.

But this made no sense.

This city wasn’t the imperial capital. It was only a small city on the outskirts. How could a remote backwater like this possibly have a special-type beast assisting its Special Combat Team? It was impossible!

”I only found out five days ago,” Liu Chenghui said, taking a deep breath. ”But I can guarantee that this information is accurate.”

As the former deputy director of the Special Combat Team’s Intelligence Division, Liu Chenghui had always controlled the team’s internal information systems. Almost every written report in the Special Combat Team had passed through his eyes.

That was why he had always managed to escape before the Special Combat Team could find him.

However, two days ago, the team’s technicians had finally blocked this information channel. At the same time, Liu Chenghui learned what the Special Combat Team was relying on.

”A special-type beast...” The alluring woman fell into deep thought, her expression troubled.

”Listen to me. We need to leave while we still can,” Liu Chenghui said anxiously. ”If I’m not mistaken, the Special Combat Team probably found out long ago that we would be holding a meeting today. If they discover us, I’m afraid none of you will be able to leave.”

”Could that beast really be that terrifying?” The alluring woman looked up, her expression puzzled.

The Evil Spirit Church was certainly smaller than an official organization like the Special Combat Team, but its forces were far more tightly organized. Apart from its headquarters, the entire church had only six branches.

Those six branches were all scattered throughout remote cities across the country, such as this riverside city.

In cities this remote, the Special Combat Team’s fighting strength was actually no match for the local Evil Spirit Church branch. Unless the team called in reinforcements, any of the church’s branches could completely wipe out the Special Combat Team stationed in its city.

Of course, the Evil Spirit Church usually wouldn’t do something so reckless and expose itself. They chose remote cities precisely so they could grow and expand, not to openly clash with the Special Combat Team.

But the situation in this city was different. The local branch of the Evil Spirit Church was in the middle of carrying out an important stage of its plan.

If they withdrew now, their losses would be enormous. That was why they had gathered here today, to see if they could take on the Special Combat Team.

But the information Liu Chenghui had brought made them hesitate.

”Yes. It’s extremely terrifying!” Liu Chenghui’s body trembled as he lowered his voice. ”I guarantee you won’t want to see it.”

Damn it, that bastard is insulting me!

The little cat hiding in the shadows was furious. She instinctively wanted to reveal herself and tear the man on the platform apart. In her mind, calling such an adorable, cute little cat terrifying was the greatest insult imaginable.

But just as that thought arose, a cold laugh suddenly rang out through the hall.

”Hmph, interesting! Another special-type beast? Now that’s some valuable information.”

The speaker was another man dressed in a black robe, but his left cheek and neck were covered in prominent tattoos. The tattoos looked like two snake tails twisted around each other.

”Who... who are you?” Liu Chenghui stared blankly at the man, his face filled with shock.

He had been a member of the Evil Spirit Church in this riverside city for more than a decade, yet he had never seen this man before.

”Xu Jie, the grand elder from our headquarters.” The alluring woman turned slightly and said, ”Because of his special status, we didn’t inform you.”

The grand elder?

Liu Chenghui froze, an expression of disbelief appearing on his face. Other than the church leader, the strongest person in the entire Evil Spirit Church was one of its five grand elders.

It was said that each of them was the equivalent of a top elite from the Special Combat Team headquarters, with the strength of a seventh-stage fighter. But Liu Chenghui could not understand why someone so powerful and influential would come to their branch.

”Because this spirit-summoning ritual is extremely important.” As if he had seen through Liu Chenghui’s thoughts, Grand Elder Xu Jie slowly continued, ”If it succeeds, the power of our holy church will rise to an entirely new level.”

A spirit-summoning ritual?

Hearing the term, the little cat fell into thought. According to her guess, could the Sky Serpent that had been appearing mysteriously around Ninth Street be part of this ritual?

”I see. No wonder you’re all in such a hurry.” Liu Chenghui finally understood, but he frowned and asked, ”Then why did you keep this from me?”

He felt as if he had been pushed aside. He was clearly one of the church’s elite members, yet no one had told him that the grand elder was coming.

The alluring woman looked troubled and seemed about to speak, but Xu Jie waved his hand and said indifferently, ”That was my decision. I didn’t think you needed to know.”

”What did you say?” Liu Chenghui’s expression became visibly angry.

He had given so much to the church and had even willingly spent more than a decade undercover for it. Yet now they treated him like an outsider.

”Was I not clear enough? Your usefulness ends here.” Xu Jie let out a cold laugh. ”Without your undercover identity, the holy church has no further need for a useless piece of trash like you.”

”You...”

Liu Chenghui’s face was full of fury. He was about to start cursing when a streak of red light suddenly pierced through his chest.

Splurt.

Liu Chenghui’s eyes widened. He looked down in disbelief and saw a fist-sized hole in his chest. It had pierced straight through his heart.

Thud.

The great spy who had served the Evil Spirit Church dutifully for more than a decade died in such a miserable and unfair way. Anger and resentment still lingered in his eyes. If he had known this would be his ending, he probably never would have accepted the Evil Spirit Church’s offer.

The alluring woman’s face also showed a complicated expression as she watched him die.

”You’ve developed feelings for him,.” Xu Jie glanced at her and said calmly.

”No, I haven’t.” The alluring woman, quickly shook her head, but she didn’t dare meet the grand elder’s eyes.

”You should understand that his heart was never truly with our holy church.” Xu Jie gave a cold smile and continued unhurriedly, ”Someone like him could never follow us in completing our great cause.”

”Yes.”

”It’s good that you understand. Still, that piece of trash did provide us with some very important information. Another special mutant beast, huh? If we can bring it under our control, completing our great cause will become much easier!”
