The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

The wound arrived through Malka’s translation.

He had been waiting for it without knowing he was waiting for it, the specific quality of dread that ran in the back of awareness when you know a text has more in it than what has been revealed and you know that more texts in a sealed archive tend to contain more difficult things rather than less difficult things.

Malka brought it to him alone.

Not to the war room, not to the east wing room, not to any of the spaces that had accumulated the weight of significant conversations. She came to the Alpha’s quarters on a Thursday morning and knocked on the door with the specific knock she used when what she carried required the Alpha’s private attention before it could be managed in any other context.

He let her in.

She sat across from him at the small desk and she put the translation on the desk between them and she said: ”The section after the wolf side baseline documentation. I’ve been translating it for six weeks. I finished it yesterday.”

He looked at the translation.

”The founding Alphas documented what the Convergence’s complete function produces in the wolf side architecture at the Full Expression’s baseline,” she said. ”The Warden function running at twenty-six meters continuously. The pack sense at the Full Expression’s amplification. The sensory architecture’s extended range. The bond at the Deepening’s deepest completion as the ordinary state.” She paused. ”They documented all of that.”

”And,” he said.

”And they documented what those functions cost the biological architecture that carries them.” She held his gaze without the management she had used to avoid the corridor’s subject for six weeks. Directly. ”The wolf-side architecture at the Full Expression’s baseline is running at a level that the founding Alphas documented as exceeding what the standard wolf biological architecture sustains indefinitely.”

He was very still.

”They documented a timeline,” she said. ”The wolf side architecture at the Full Expression’s baseline, the Warden function at twenty six meters as the continuous state, the pack sense at the amplified level, the bond at the Deepening completed depth sustains the biological architecture at elevated function for a specific period before the elevation begins to cost the architecture rather than express through it.”

”How long,” he said.

She was quiet for a moment.

”The founding Alphas documented it as variable,” she said. ”Dependent on the wolf side’s baseline condition at the Convergence’s activation, the rate of the Deepening’s progression, and factors they described as individual that their documentation couldn’t specify.” She paused. ”The range they documented was ten years at the lower end and thirty at the upper.”

He sat with that.

Ten to thirty years. The wolf side architecture at the Full Expression’s baseline sustaining for ten to thirty years before the sustained elevation began to produce the specific consequences that the founding Alphas had documented with the same clinical precision they brought to everything.

He read the translation while Malka sat across from him.

The consequences were documented with the care that people brought to things they wished they did not have to document. The elevated function’s cost to the biological architecture accumulated progressively rather than all at once not a sudden failure but the specific, gradual accumulation of running a biological system at the level that exceeded its designed maintenance capacity. Like a structure built for a specific load bearing more than that load not collapsing immediately but showing the accumulation of the excess in the specific ways that structural stress showed itself over time.

He was twenty nine years old.

The founding Alphas had documented that at the Deepening’s completion rate he and Reyna had run at the fastest possible completion, driven by the operational stress and the sustained engagement pressure and the Hollow’s strategy of accelerating the wolf side’s progression, the timeline was at the lower end of the range rather than the upper.

He sat with ten years.

Malka watched him sit with it.

She did not offer comfort and she did not elaborate and she did not ask what he planned to do with it. She had learned, across eighty one years and twelve weeks of the specific Alpha she was sitting across from, that he did not need those things in the moment of receiving significant information. He needed the space to receive it and he needed it delivered honestly and he needed the person delivering it to be present rather than managing their own response to his response.

She was present.

He read the section a second time.

He read it looking for the things the founding Alphas had left for exactly this situation because they had left things for every situation he had encountered in the archive and he had learned to look for what they had prepared rather than what they had omitted.

They had not omitted anything.

The section after the consequence documentation described what the founding Alphas had built to address the consequence. Not a cure, the elevation’s cost was a function of what the Full Expression’s baseline ran at, and the Full Expression’s baseline was not a state that could be adjusted without adjusting the anchor’s function, and the anchor’s function could not be adjusted without adjusting the regional stability that the Full Expression maintained. The cost was the cost of what the Convergence was at its complete function.

What the founding Alphas had built was an acknowledgment.

They had documented the cost and they had documented that the cost was known to them when they built the contingency and they had built the contingency anyway because the alternative a regional supernatural structure without the Convergence’s anchor cost more in aggregate over any timeline than the wolf-side’s biological architecture elevated to the Full Expression’s baseline for ten to thirty years.

They had made the choice.

They had made it deliberately and they had documented it honestly and they had left the documentation in the archive for the Alpha who would eventually read it.

Axel sat with that for a long time.

He sat with the founding Alphas’ choice and with what it meant and with what it produced, the specific quality of receiving a decision that was made for you before you existed, by people who understood what the decision cost and made it anyway because they understood what the alternative cost more.

He thought about what his father would have said.

His father had been buried in the northern ridge’s forest four years ago during a winter harder than this one. He had been fifty seven years old. He had led the pack for twenty three years and had built things and held things and made decisions that cost him and had died in the packhouse with Axel at his bedside and the pack in the corridor outside and the forest outside the window doing what it always did.

He had not been Alpha at the Full Expression’s baseline.

He had been Alpha in the way that Alphas were Alpha before the contingency completed.

Twenty three years of leading and then fifty seven years of living.

Axel looked at the translation and thought about ten years at the lower end.

He was twenty nine years old.

He thought about thirty years at the upper end.

He was still twenty-nine years old.

He thought about what the founding Alphas had known when they built the contingency that the wolf side Alpha who completed the Deepening at the rate the operational stress of the Convergence’s opposition would drive it toward would likely be young, because the operational pressure and the Deepening’s acceleration ran together and young Alphas in sustained high stakes conflict were the profile the opposition’s strategy would produce.

They had known.

They had built it anyway.

He thought about what they had understood that made that choice something they could live with. What they had understood about the regional stability the anchor maintained and what that stability was worth and what the alternative produced over a timeline that was longer than thirty years but measured the same quality of cost in different kinds of people rather than in one person’s biological architecture.

He looked at Malka.

”She doesn’t know,” he said.

”No,” Malka said. ”This section was after the sections I translated for you together.” She paused. ”I translated this section alone.”

”Give me time before she reads it,” he said.

Malka held his gaze. ”How much time.”

He thought about it.

”A day,” he said. ”Not for management. For.....” He stopped. He found the honest word. ”For deciding how to tell her.”

Malka looked at him for a long moment.

”The founding Alphas documented their reasoning for building the contingency with this cost present in the architecture,” she said. ”The section after the consequence documentation the acknowledgment section, they wrote it to the Alpha who would read it.” She put her hand on the translation. ”They said: the cost is known to us and we build with it because what the anchor maintains is worth what the anchor costs. We made this choice for you and we believed you would have made it yourself if you had been present when we made it.”

He looked at the translation.

He sat with the founding Alphas’ belief that he would have made the same choice.

He held it with both hands.

”A day,” he said.

Malka stood. She left the translation on the desk and she went to the door and she stopped.

”They also wrote,” she said, ”that the choice belongs to both sides of the Convergence. Not only the wolf-side, who carries the primary cost. Both sides.” She held the door. ”The section after the acknowledgment section describes what the Blood Apex’s Full Expression baseline can do for the wolf-side’s biological architecture when both sides are fully present to the choice and to each other.” She paused. ”I’ll translate that section tonight.”

She left.

He sat alone in the Alpha’s quarters with the translation on the desk and the Warden field running at twenty six meters in every direction and the pack sense carrying three hundred wolves in their morning and the bond running at the Full Expression’s depth in the direction of the library where Reyna was.

He breathed.

He thought about ten years.

He thought about the founding Alphas’ belief that he would have made the same choice.

He held both things with both hands, the way he held everything that had mass enough to require both hands, and he let them be what they were without making them smaller than they were.

Outside the Alpha’s quarters window the forest stood in its morning light.

Patient.

Old.

Doing what it had always done.

He sat with the cost of the choice.

Then he stood up.

He went to find her.
