The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

Cael came to Axel alone on the evening after the return from the route.

Not in the war room in the eastern yard, where Axel had gone after the dinner that Brea had produced with the ambition of someone who understood the return’s significance and had been planning the meal for twelve days. The eastern yard at dusk, the boundary stones’ field running at the Full Expression’s resonance, the forest going to its evening dark at the territory’s edge.

He was standing at the yard’s far edge looking at the corridor’s direction when he heard Cael’s approach. He turned.

The King looked the way he had been looking since the chamber. Not diminished, the gravity that significant events produced in significant people, the specific weight of decisions that had been made and costs that had been counted. He looked like a man who had crossed something he had not known he was going to cross and was standing on the other side of it taking inventory.

He came to stand beside Axel at the yard’s edge.

They looked at the forest together for a moment.

”She’s well,” Cael said. It wasn’t a question. He was reading it through the bloodline’s sensitivity to the Blood Apex and through the forty-eight hours of being in the same packhouse since the return.

”She’s well,” Axel confirmed.

Another moment of the forest and the evening.

”I’m going back to the estate,” Cael said.

Axel had been expecting this. The King had been at Ashveil for, he counted thirty four days. The estate required its King and the clan required its leadership and the Voss Clan’s internal process of absorbing everything that had happened needed Cael’s presence in the structures where that processing happened.

”When,” Axel said.

”Tomorrow morning,” Cael said. ”Early.” He paused. ”I’ve already spoken with Reyna.”

”How did that go,” Axel said.

Cael was quiet for a moment. ”She told me to send her documentation access to the estate’s archive,” he said. ”For the Convergence’s ongoing governance consultation that the Council’s framework established.” He paused. ”She said she would be in contact through the formal channels and through the bond.” Another pause. ”And she said she would come to the estate when the calendar permitted.”

”The calendar will permit it,” Axel said.

”I know,” Cael said. ”I believe her.” He looked at the corridor direction. ”I wasn’t asking for reassurance about that.”

Axel waited.

”I’m asking about something else,” Cael said. He turned to look at Axel directly. The deep water eyes. Reyna’s inheritance, running at the King’s particular depth which was different from Reyna’s depth in the way that the same feature in two people was always somewhat different for being shaped by different centuries of different experience. ”I spent a hundred and twelve years building a world around her,” he said. ”The specific world of someone who understands what they’re protecting and builds accordingly.” He paused. ”The chamber.”

Axel was quiet.

”I know what the chamber cost,” Cael said. ”I know what the five days on the floor cost. I know what the minimum was and what the recovery pace has been and what the founding Alphas documented about the long-term condition of a Blood Apex that has passed through the Full Expression’s complete deployment.” He held Axel’s gaze. ”I know all of it precisely because I’ve been reading everything Malka translates and everything the Council’s formal record contains and everything my own bloodline’s sensitivity tells me about my daughter’s condition.”

”And,” Axel said.

”And I’m asking you to tell me what the world she’s living in looks like,” Cael said. ”Not the Convergence’s function. Not the alliance’s institutional standing. Not the regional governance structure.” He paused. ”The world she’s in.”

Axel held his gaze.

He thought about what to say. He thought about the breakfast table and the coffee and the account from the far eastern sector and she commands death and the corner of her mouth and her hand in his. He thought about the library and the morning light and Brea’s soup and the ridge at full moon with the pack running below.

He thought about the irreducible things.

”She has the library,” he said. ”The one she’s been in since the first weeks. Her arrangement of it. The east window’s morning light.” He paused. ”She has Brea, who feeds her without being asked and has decided she’s acceptable. She has Sev, who brings her coffee and told me she’s load-bearing in whatever room she’s in.” He looked at Cael steadily. ”She has the pack, which doesn’t fully understand what she is but understands what the anchor does and feels it as something that is for them.” He paused. ”And she has me.”

Cael was very still.

”Tell me about that last one,” he said. Not with the weight of a father delivering a warning. With the weight of a father asking an honest question and wanting an honest answer.

”I’m twelve years of this pack’s Alpha and three years older than your daughter looks and considerably younger than your daughter is,” Axel said. ”I came back through a gate after fourteen months and found my pack adrift and I’ve spent the past year building its center back while fighting the hardest series of things this territory has faced in a century.” He held Cael’s gaze. ”I’m not a simple thing and what I have with your daughter is not a simple thing and I’m not going to describe it as simpler than it is.” He paused. ”What I can tell you is that she was in the minimum for five days and the minimum carried my hands and Brea’s kitchen and the elder stones in the dark. I know what that means. I know what it means that those specific things were there at the minimum.” He held the King’s gaze. ”I’m not going to make you a promise about that. You can read what it is.”

Cael looked at him for a long moment.

Then he did something that Axel had not seen him do in thirty-four days.

He let go of the King’s posture.

Not dramatically not a collapse or a visible release. The specific, small letting-go of someone who has been maintaining a register that costs something and has decided that the cost is no longer necessary. He looked at Axel without the King’s particular formal gravity, with something closer to the private register of a man who has been carrying a concern and has received the information he needed to set it down.

”She used to read in the estate’s library,” he said. ”Her mother’s arrangement of it, which she maintained after her mother died. The same books in the same order for sixty years.” He looked at the corridor direction. ”When she left the estate, she took nothing with her. Not the books. Not the arrangement.” He paused. ”She told me, when I came the first time, that she had found a new arrangement.” He looked at Axel. ”I didn’t know what to make of that then.”

”And now,” Axel said.

”Now I know what the library looks like,” he said. ”I’ve sat in it. I know the east window’s morning light.” He paused. ”I know what a new arrangement means.”

Axel held his gaze.

”She’s mine to worry about,” Cael said. ”She always will be. That doesn’t go away because she’s grown and bonded and carrying the anchor that the founding Alphas built the regional structure for.” He looked at Axel steadily. ”But the worry and the trust are not the same thing. I’m telling you I have the second one.”

Axel looked at him.

”I hear that,” he said.

They stood at the eastern yard’s edge in the evening dark and the forest was around them and the boundary stones ran at their resonance and the territory was the territory it had always been and more than it had always been simultaneously.

”The estate requires its King,” Axel said.

”It does,” Cael agreed.

”The formal governance consultation framework means we’re in contact regardless,” Axel said. ”The Council’s structure creates the regular communication that the alliance’s standing supports.”

”Yes,” Cael said.

A moment.

”Bring her to the estate,” Cael said. ”When the calendar permits. Not for the governance consultation.” He paused. ”For the library. For what it means to show someone the place you came from when you trust them to see it.” He met Axel’s eyes. ”She hasn’t been back since she left. She should go back now. With you.”

Axel thought about that.

About the estate’s library and Reyna’s mother’s arrangement maintained for sixty years. About what it meant for someone who had built a new arrangement in a packhouse library to go back to the old one with the person who had been in the minimum’s irreducible things.

”We’ll go,” he said.

Cael nodded once.

They stood at the yard’s edge until the evening had completed itself into full dark and the boundary stones ran in the specific resonance of the Full Expression’s anchor at night and the forest was what it had always been.

Then the King walked back toward the packhouse to spend his last night under Ashveil’s roof before the drive back to the estate that was his and the world that was his and the daughter who was his in the way that children were their parents’ even when the children were a hundred and twelve years old and carrying the founding Alphas’ contingency at the Full Expression’s baseline.

Axel stayed at the yard’s edge for a few minutes longer.

He felt the territory around him through the Warden field running at its baseline. The forest and the boundary stones and the corridor and the elder stones in the northern forest and the packhouse behind him with its wood smoke and its three hundred wolves and its war room lamp.

He thought about the King walking back toward the packhouse door.

He thought about trust and what it looked like when it was given by someone who had spent a hundred and twelve years building walls around the thing they trusted you with.

He thought about fall. The fall of the walls, not the fall of the person behind them. The specific fall that was not defeat but release, the letting-go of the maintenance of something that had served its purpose and could now be set down because something else had been built that made the walls unnecessary.

The King was going home.

His daughter was already home.

The fall of the King was not the fall of anything that mattered.

It was a father walking through a packhouse door on his last evening as a guest rather than a visitor.

Axel breathed the territory’s evening air.

Then he walked back toward the packhouse and the lamp that was always the same lamp and the person who was always at the table.
