The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

Vale arrived at the gate at one fifty-three in the morning.

He came with his sister and two Halvern warriors not the three he had said, which told Axel that one of the three had declined the departure and that Vale had made the decision to come anyway with two rather than delay for the third. The sister was a compact, dark haired young woman who looked enough like Vale that the family relationship was visible before anyone said it, and she had the specific expression of someone who had been relocated against their preference and had decided that demonstrating they understood why didn’t require them to be happy about it.

Axel met them at the gate.

Vale looked the way he had sounded on the radio the flat, worn quality of a man who had made a decision that cost him something and was carrying the cost without performing the carrying. He introduced his sister as Maia. Maia looked at Axel with the frank assessment of a wolf who had grown up in a pack with a brother who had Alpha weight and had learned to read authority accurately rather than deferentially.

”You’re the Forbidden Hybrid’s Alpha,” she said.

”I’m the Alpha of Ashveil Pack,” he said. ”The Forbidden Hybrid is the other half of that.”

She looked at him for a moment. Then she looked at the packhouse. ”Castor says it’s safe here.”

”It is,” he said.

”He also said the Ascendancy used me as leverage,” she said. ”I want you to know I didn’t cooperate with them.”

”I know,” Axel said. ”Your brother told me.”

She nodded once a specific, settling nod that accepted the acknowledgment without requiring elaboration. He read her in the way he read everyone who came through his gate not threat assessment, something more like the inventory of what a person was and what they brought and what they needed. She was young and proud and had been frightened without having been broken by the frightening, which was its own kind of capability.

He brought them inside and got Maia settled in the guest quarters on the second floor and left Vale in the war room with Petra and the overnight intelligence assessment from Daren’s channel monitoring while he went to find Reyna.

She was awake, she had been awake since Vale’s radio call, the pack sense running at its steady monitoring frequency through the night hours. She had the Ascendancy’s regional network documentation spread across the library table and she was cross-referencing the coordination meeting’s attendee list against the clan leadership profiles she and Cael had built during the alliance drafting.

”The three clan leaders’ attendance,” she said when he came in. ”Maren, Vethros, Caul. Maren and Vethros are at the meeting because they’re assessing their options after last night. The adjacent clan operatives’ withdrawal wasn’t a full commitment reversal, they’re deciding whether last night’s cost was sufficient to reconsider the Ascendancy’s offer or whether the territorial recognition is worth a second approach.”

”And Caul,” he said.

”Caul’s leadership is ideologically committed,” she said. ”The territorial recognition was a supplement for them, not the mechanism. They’ll advocate for a second approach regardless of what Maren and Vethros are reconsidering.” She looked up at him. ”Which means the meeting is actually a negotiation between Maren and Vethros’s cost benefit reassessment and Caul’s ideological commitment, with the Ascendancy’s coordinators facilitating toward Caul’s position.”

”If we can reach Maren and Vethros before the meeting.....”

”We have the same offer Cael made them,” she said. ”The territorial recognition documents were signed and filed. It’s already registered with the Council.” She met his eyes. ”If Maren and Vethros receive communication from Cael tonight confirming that the territorial recognition is legally binding regardless of the Ascendancy’s existence or the current conflict’s outcome....”

”Their instrumental reason for attending the meeting disappears,” he said.

”Yes.”

He looked at the clock. One fifty nine. The meeting was tomorrow night. Cael’s communication needed to reach Maren and Vethros through formal clan channels, which required the estate’s communication infrastructure, which Cael had access to from his current position at Ashveil through the secure channel Sable maintained.

He went to Sable.

The communication went out at two forty one. Sable confirmed transmission to both clan leaders’ formal channels at two forty-three.

He returned to the war room and worked with Vale and Petra through the early morning hours building the intelligence picture from Vale’s knowledge of the adjacent clans’ tactical disposition. Vale knew Maren’s leadership personally, they had negotiated a shared hunting boundary dispute eighteen months ago, before the Ascendancy’s recruitment. He knew how Maren thought and what Maren valued and what a formal territorial recognition document in Maren’s hand would do to the cost benefit calculation.

At four in the morning the monitoring channel flagged an incoming transmission.

Daren brought it from the secondary device he had been running in the corner of the war room throughout the night. He set it on the table in front of Axel without a word.

Axel read it.

It was a response to the Ascendancy’s coordination meeting invitation. Not from Maren or Vethros. From a name that stopped him completely when he read it.

Elder Malka.

He read it again.

The message was short. Two sentences. A confirmation of attendance at the coordination meeting and a notation about the specific intelligence she would bring the founding Alphas’ archive documentation, specifically the sections that Axel had not yet seen, the sections beyond what Malka had translated.

He set the message down.

He sat very still.

He thought about eighty one years old and thirty years of learning an archaic dialect to read a specific text. He thought about a woman who had told him to maintain the distance and had revised that position when the Warden Mark appeared on his temple and had brought the translations as she found them and had sat in the basement chamber with him in the lamplight and given him what she had.

He thought about the sections she had not yet translated.

The sections she had told him she was working through. That she would bring as she found them.

She had been bringing them to someone else.

He was at Malka’s quarters in the packhouse in three minutes. The door was locked, which it was never locked because Malka had been in this packhouse for fifty years and had not locked a door in forty of them. He did not break the door. He stood in the corridor outside it and breathed and made himself think before he acted because thinking before acting was the discipline that had served him for twelve years and abandoning it now would not serve anyone.

Reyna was behind him. She had followed from the war room when he left without speaking and she was standing in the corridor and reading the door and reading him.

”She left,” Reyna said quietly.

He turned to look at her.

”The pack sense,” Reyna said. ”I’ve been reading the aggregate all night. I’ve been so focused on the external threat vectors that I didn’t....” She stopped. ”There’s a gap in the packhouse’s interior reading. A space where there should be a member’s presence and isn’t. It’s been there since approximately midnight.” She met his eyes. ”I didn’t flag it because I assumed it was someone outside on patrol.”

Midnight. Four hours ago.

He went to the eastern boundary.

The boundary stones registered the crossing in the historical record that the field maintained not in real time, not as an alarm, but as a documented event in the field’s accumulated data. He had learned to read the data during the Convergence’s development when the boundary stones’ resonance with the Warden field had made the field’s records accessible to him through the mark’s sensitivity.

Elder Malka had crossed the eastern boundary at twelve-seventeen.

Into the corridor.

He stood at the boundary stones and looked at the corridor’s dark and felt the specific cold weight of a person who has understood something that changes the shape of twelve weeks of events retroactively.

The archive sections she hadn’t translated yet. The things she had told him she was working through and would bring when she found them. She had been sitting on sections that contained information relevant to the current situation he didn’t know what sections, didn’t know what they contained, but the fact of her decision to bring them to the coordination meeting rather than to him told him the sections’ content was significant and that Malka had made a decision about who should have it.

When. How long. He didn’t know. He didn’t know if it had been gradual or if there had been a specific moment when Lira’s offer or argument had found purchase in something Malka already carried.

He knew what Malka carried. He had known it since the first night she said she needs to leave about Reyna. He had known it through every translation and every revision and every effortful, genuine acknowledgment that she had been wrong about something she had believed for decades.

The revisions had been real. He believed that. They were too specific and too costly to have been performed.

But revision was not the same as full acceptance. And something in the un-translated sections had apparently provided Lira with the material to reach the part of Malka that revision had not yet touched.

He went back to the war room.

Vale looked at his face when he came in and said nothing, which was Vale learning how this packhouse worked.

”Change the morning’s plan,” Axel said to Petra. ”The coordination meeting is no longer the primary intelligence problem.” He looked at the map. ”Malka crossed into the corridor at midnight. She’s at the meeting location or heading there. She has documentation from the founding Alphas’ archive that she’s been holding back.” He paused. ”I need to know what’s in those sections before the coordination meeting uses them.”

The war room was very quiet.

”How,” Petra said.

He looked at Reyna.

She looked at him with the specific expression of someone who has just run a calculation and arrived at an answer they could have predicted but hadn’t wanted to.

”I go into the corridor,” she said. ”Alone, or with you. The coordination meeting location is in the corridor’s central zone, that’s the only neutral space they could use that both the adjacent clans and the Ascendancy coordinators would accept. If we reach the meeting location before the meeting begins...”

”We hear what the sections contain before it’s used against us,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

He looked at the clock.

The coordination meeting was scheduled for the following night, which meant the participants were already moving toward position. Malka had a four hour head start.

He looked at the corridor’s direction.

He went.
