The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

The march wasn’t what the name suggested.

He had used the word internally, in the planning sessions with Petra and Reyna and Cael, because march was the closest available word for a coordinated movement of a significant group toward a specific objective. But it wasn’t the march of the twelve weeks’ engagements not the full pack to the elder stones, not the joint force into the corridor, not the northeastern drive through Corran’s access roads under time pressure.

It was a procession.

That was the more accurate word, and he had resisted it because procession implied ceremony and ceremony implied performance and he had spent twelve weeks deliberately not performing any of the things that could have been performed. But the distinction between performance and acknowledgment was real, and what the regional supernatural community needed at this specific moment was acknowledgment rather than strategy.

The founding Alphas had built for this too.

The final section’s instruction, the building is yours had been followed in the document by something Malka had not initially included in her reading of it because it was not language in the conventional sense. It was a map. A route. Sketched in the same hand as the founding Alphas’ documentation, connecting eight points across the regional territory in a specific sequence that Malka had identified as the boundary stones’ original installation route the path the founding Alphas had walked when they placed the stones a hundred and twelve years ago.

The route visited every major supernatural community in the region in the order the stones had been placed.

They had walked it once to establish the structure.

The founding Alphas’ implicit instruction, in leaving the map at the end of the archive, was that walking it again now, with the Convergence’s complete function active and the anchor running at its baseline and the Council’s formal recognition in place would do what the Full Expression’s regional deployment had done structurally, but at the human level.

Not at the field-condition level that sensitive community members read involuntarily.

At the level of being present in a room with people and letting them read the anchor directly.

Axel had looked at the route for an hour before he said yes to it.

He had looked at it and thought about what it required twelve days, eight communities, the packhouse without its Alpha for nearly two weeks and he had thought about Malka’s translation of the final section and about Sev calling the anchor load-bearing and about the three neutral packs who had withdrawn their neutrality declarations because they had been in a room with Reyna and had heard the truth about what the Convergence was.

He had said yes.

The departure preparation took four days.

Petra was running the packhouse in Axel’s absence, which she had done before and had done well, and which she received the assignment for this time with the expression of someone who understood that the mission being left behind was the mission and that the mission going out the gate was also the mission and that both of those things were true simultaneously.

”How long,” she said.

”Twelve days for the route,” he said. ”Potentially more depending on what the communities need.” He held her gaze. ”Don’t put a ceiling on it.”

She looked at him. ”You’re building,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”How long has it been since this pack built something new instead of defending something existing.”

He thought about it honestly. ”Before my father’s era,” he said. ”Maybe before his father’s.”

She was quiet for a moment. Then she said: ”Take as long as it needs.”

The group that left Ashveil’s western gate on a Thursday morning was not large by the twelve weeks’ operational standards. Axel, Reyna, Cael, Malka who had asked to come with the same direct simplicity she brought to everything and whom he had said yes to without requiring explanation. Sable. Vale, who had come back to the packhouse two days after the Council session and had not formally left since, which Axel had treated as a signal about something and had not required Vale to articulate. Elder Vance and Councilor Maren, representing the Council’s formal standing alongside the founding element’s presence.

And Lira.

This was the thing that the group’s composition required the most deliberate thought. Lira had been in the packhouse since the return from Caul’s holding not occupying it in the way that Reyna occupied it, not integrated into its operational rhythm, but present. Working, in the second-floor room that had been her space, on what she described when he asked as the complete documentation of the Ascendancy’s architecture and methodology for the Council’s formal record.

He had asked her on the third preparation day whether she intended to join the route.

She had been quiet for a moment. ”The communities that the Ascendancy recruited or pressured,” she said. ”The smaller packs and clans in the dispersed ideology’s territory. They know the Ascendancy’s version of the Convergence because I built the version they heard.” She met his eyes. ”The correction requires the person who built the wrong version to be present when the right version is delivered.”

He had thought about that for the time it required.

”Yes,” he said. ”Come.”

She had nodded once and gone back to her documentation.

They left at dawn.

The first community on the founding Alphas’ route was a small wolf pack in the southern territory forty members, a pack that had been at the regional supernatural community’s edge since before the truce and had maintained that edge through the twelve weeks’ events with the careful attention of a community that had been watching what happened and drawing its own conclusions.

They arrived at noon.

The pack’s Alpha, a woman named Rael in her mid-forties with the specific quality of someone who had been leading a small community through difficult terrain for long enough to have found the essential things and released the inessential received them in the open air rather than inside a building, which Axel read as the correct choice and which Rael had probably made because a small pack’s interior spaces were not built for twelve visitors and the open air said something about the meeting’s intended quality.

No ceremony. No formal protocol. A circle of people in the autumn light of the southern territory with the boundary stones’ field running at the Full Expression’s baseline and the anchor present in the air the way it was present in every space Reyna occupied.

Rael read it immediately.

He saw her read it the involuntary attention shift that the anchor produced in people sensitive enough to register it, the specific reorientation toward the source the way plants oriented toward light. She was too experienced to show it dramatically. But she registered it and then she looked at Reyna directly.

”Tell me what this is,” she said. Not to Axel, to Reyna. The instinct of someone who was reading the anchor from a specific source and wanted the source’s explanation.

Reyna told her.

Not the full documentation that was for the Council sessions and the formal record. The version she gave Rael was the version she had given the three neutral packs, which was the personal version. What she was. Where she had come from. What the anchor was and what it was doing and what the founding Alphas had built it to do.

She told Rael about eleven weeks in a packhouse and a war room lamp and the full pack at the elder stones and the chamber and the floor.

She told it without management and without the professional frame and without the operational composure that had been the default register for twelve weeks.

She told it the way she had been telling things since the chamber — at the depth where the irreducible things were.

Rael listened.

When Reyna finished, Rael was quiet for a long moment. She looked at Axel. At Cael. At Lira the specific, sharpened look of someone who recognized Lira’s role in what had been described and was making the assessment of what Lira’s presence in this group meant about how the accounting had been completed.

”The Ascendancy told us the Convergence was a new hierarchy,” Rael said. ”A power concentration that would reorganize the regional structure around itself.”

”Yes,” Lira said. She said it from the edge of the circle, in the flat, clean register she had been using since the dissolution. ”That was the version I built. It was wrong about the Convergence’s function and correct about one thing, the regional structure is reorganizing. It’s reorganizing around the founding element that was always there. Not around a new power. Around what the structure was always built on.” She paused. ”I spent thirty seven years being wrong about which of those two things I was looking at.”

Rael looked at Lira for a long moment.

”Why are you here,” she said. Not hostilely. With the direct assessment of someone who needed to understand the complete picture.

”Because the wrong version of the Convergence reached your community through me,” Lira said. ”The correction requires the person who delivered the wrong version.”

Rael held her gaze.

Then she looked at the circle, at the eight people who had walked the founding Alphas’ route from Ashveil’s gate to her pack’s southern territory and she said something to the pack member beside her in a low voice and the pack member left and came back with chairs, because the standing circle had been the correct shape for the meeting’s opening and the chairs were the correct shape for what the meeting was becoming.

They stayed for two days.
