SSS-Ranked Surgeon In Another World: The Healer Is Actually OP!

Bruce had decided, after some thought last night, that today should be a stone-dungeon day. Yesterday had been heat, aligned with Kael. Today he wanted foundational essence back into his soul-body, the depth-essence from the stone dungeon that had pushed him and the others across the F-to-E threshold. He wanted more of it, more layers of it, in the days between the threshold and whatever E-to-D breakthrough came next. And the stone dungeon was where the alpha rollers lived. He wanted another shot at an alpha kill.

Also, more practically, and Bruce admitted this only to himself, the stone dungeon was better ground for what he wanted to test today. The soul-script seals. He needed to try them in real combat. And the stone dungeon’s shell-crab clusters gave him a wide test population of moderately durable targets to practice on without risking the party.

The B-rank guard at the stone portal was at her post.

She looked up as they approached, and, as with the heat portal guard yesterday, her eyes went first to their fingers, then to their glows, then to their faces. She read the E-rank consolidation in them without needing to be told.

She held out her hand for tokens.

Bruce handed his over. The token chimed with the deeper E-rank tone. She made her note.

”E-rank,” she said.

”Yes.”

”You can access level two of this dungeon.”

”We’re staying on level one.”

”Interior?”

”Interior.”

”Interior on level one at E-rank will feel like the entrance section did at F-rank. You’ll want to push further today than you did before. The interior has three chambers past the fourth split that I marked yesterday. Beyond those chambers, the level-one alpha rollers hunt. Not the kind you took two days ago, bigger ones. Rare but real. If you find one, you can take it.”

”Thank you for telling us.”

”Mm.”

Bruce paused before stepping through.

”Guard,” he said.

She looked up. ”Yes.”

”Why are you at an F-rank dungeon post at B-rank?”

She held his gaze for a moment.

He was not sure, until she began her answer, whether he had overstepped by asking. It was a direct question about her circumstances, from a hunter she had known for four days. In many contexts that would have been rude. But she was the kind of soul, Bruce had come to understand, who valued directness in others because she practiced it herself.

She did not answer him at first. Instead she looked past him at the two of his companions.

”You picked good friends, Ackerman.”

Bruce blinked.

She had used his surname. He had never given it to her.

She saw the small tightening at the corner of his eye and inclined her head. Not apologetically. Simply an acknowledgement.

”The senior clerk at the Guild sends me the reports on hunters who use my portal frequently. It is part of my job to know who is passing through. Your surname was on the report.”

”That’s fair.”

”To your question. I chose this post seventy years ago. I had been a hunter at A-rank. I was injured badly in a bounty. I recovered but my talent was diminished. B-rank was my new ceiling, and hunting at B was harder than hunting at A had been. I asked the Guild for stationary work. This post was open. It has been mine ever since.” She glanced at the portal. ”I chose it because the stone dungeon is quiet. I like quiet.”

”Thank you for telling me.”

”I told you because you asked plainly. I do not tell many people this.”

”I understand.”

”Good hunting today.”

She waved them through.

Bruce stepped into the portal.

The stone dungeon’s cold was familiar now.

Bruce stepped through into the pale blue-white glow of the cavern and felt the mineral chill settle onto his soul-body as a known and welcomed thing rather than a strange pressure. His foundational essence, deepened over two days of stone hunting and further consolidated by last night’s E-rank settling, resonated cleanly with the terrain. He was, in a small way, a stone-dungeon soul now, not aligned to the terrain the way Kael was aligned to heat, but with real familiarity built into him.

He liked the feeling.

He led them into the first chamber.

The plan for today was simple: hunt normally through the interior, test the soul-script seals on shell-crab clusters, push into the deep interior chambers the B-rank guard had described, and, if an alpha appeared, take it. If no alpha appeared, they would have done a solid day’s work, restored their reserves, and given Bruce enough clean tests of the seals to know whether he wanted to invest more time in the formal system.

The first crab cluster came in the second chamber.

Six shell-crabs, defensive formation.

Bruce held up a hand and the others stopped. He wanted to try the seals first, before the party engaged.

He drew his index finger through the air and wrote the seal for stop, the small compact character the manual had described, with the specific stroke order the manual had emphasized. The ink formed the character. He committed it. He pushed it toward the lead crab in the cluster.

The seal traveled.

The seal struck.

The crab stopped.

Not stunned. Not slowed. Simply stopped. All four legs froze mid-motion. The lead crab was suddenly a statue, held in the exact posture of its walking gait. The other crabs, which had been moving with it, noticed the halt and reoriented, but slowly, unsure, the coordination of the cluster disrupted by the loss of its leader.

The seal held for about four seconds.

Then it released, and the lead crab resumed motion, startled, disoriented, its rhythm broken.

Bruce did not need to say anything to the others. Kael saw the opening and was already moving. His fire-lance struck the disoriented crab through the seam at the base of the shell. Theron’s scythe took a second crab on the flank. Bruce shaped bullets and finished the remaining four.

The fight was over in perhaps fifteen seconds.

Bruce stood there and considered the seal’s cost.

Stop had drawn about four percent of his reserves. Compared to writing the full word stop as first-principle soul-script, which he had not tried, but which he estimated would have cost him closer to fifteen percent, the seal was significantly more efficient. The manual had been correct about that. The seal was also more limited in application: it produced a specific fixed effect, four seconds of complete motion arrest, without variation. First-principle stop would have been more flexible; he could have modulated the duration, the depth, the scope. But the seal gave him a repeatable predictable tool at a fraction of the cost.
