SSS-Ranked Surgeon In Another World: The Healer Is Actually OP!

”Finish the work. Pack the kills. Walk out at our normal pace. If they want to approach, they’ll approach. We do not acknowledge them unless they show themselves. We do not change our behavior because they’re watching.”

”Decline is a complete sentence.”

”And right now, don’t notice them is a complete sentence too.”

They went back to butchering.

Bruce kept the presence at the edge of his awareness as he worked. The soul did not move. It did not advance. It did not retreat. It simply stayed where it was, watching the three of them work the alpha down to its component parts, packing the meat and the cores and the spine-plates into their rings.

It watched them with the patience of a person doing exactly the work they had intended to do.

When the three of them finished and stood up and shouldered their light packs, the presence stayed where it was.

Bruce led them out at the normal pace. They walked through the canyon back toward the portal, past the chambers they had cleared, with the natural slight quickness of a party that had finished a good morning and was heading back. They did not look behind them.

The presence followed them at a constant distance.

Fifty paces back. The whole way. Not closing. Not falling behind. Maintaining position.

Bruce could feel the soul behind him as a faint pressure at the edge of his perception, like the warmth of a hand held a foot from the back of his neck. It was patient. It was professional. It had been doing this kind of work for a long time.

When they reached the portal, Bruce did not stop or hesitate. He stepped through. Kael followed. Theron followed.

They came out into the Xiltra side of the portal in the late morning’s gold light.

A moment later, the portal accepted one more soul behind them.

Bruce did not turn around immediately. He walked perhaps ten paces from the portal’s edge, out into the open square, into a public space where the eyes of other souls were on them and any conversation would be observed, and then he turned.

The soul who had been watching them was standing just past the portal’s edge.

He was tall.

That was the first thing Bruce registered. Not extremely tall, but taller than average for the humanoid souls he had seen in Xiltra. He stood with the easy weight of someone who had spent a long time being aware of their own height and had decided it was simply a fact about them rather than something to use. His soul-body was lean, not thin, but lean, the kind of build that came from movement rather than mass. His glow was a deep clear silver-blue, the steady glow of B-rank, possibly even A, Bruce could not tell at his own rank.

His face was unremarkable in the way a working professional’s face is unremarkable. Late middle age by soul-body standards. Cleanly shaved. Eyes a pale grey-blue, calm, set wide and slightly tired.

He was wearing the kind of clothes that were intentionally plain. Dark, well-made, no insignia, no obvious faction markings. The kind of clothes a person wore when they did not want their clothes to tell anyone anything about them. Bruce, who had been a long time in his own life on Earth before all this, recognized the choice. The man was someone who knew that not signaling was its own signal.

He raised one hand, palm outward, in a small gesture of formal civility.

He did not approach further.

He waited.

Bruce considered him.

The man was waiting for permission to come closer. He was not pushing. He was not assuming. He was simply standing at a distance that allowed Bruce to choose whether to engage. This was, Bruce understood, a courtesy. It was also a piece of information. The kind of person who waited for permission was either someone who genuinely respected the line, or someone who knew that pushing past it would cost them more than waiting. Either way, he was not the kind of approach the old soul had warned them about first.

Bruce nodded slowly. Once. The small gesture for you may come closer.

The man came forward at an easy walking pace, not quickly. He stopped perhaps six paces from Bruce, close enough to converse but far enough that no one would mistake them for friends, and inclined his head.

”My name is Caelen,” he said. His voice was quiet, level, professional. ”I have been observing your party for several days.”

Bruce said nothing.

Caelen waited a beat for a response. When none came, he continued with the same calm tone.

”I represent no faction,” he said. ”I am not seeking to recruit you into any organization. I am not a Spire patron. I am not a bounty broker.”

He paused.

”I am here on behalf of one person, who has asked me to convey her interest in meeting you at your convenience. She would like to have a conversation. She is prepared to come to any location of your choosing in the city. She does not require an answer today.”

Bruce considered.

”Who is the person?” he asked.

”She prefers to introduce herself in person, if you accept the meeting.”

”That’s a fair preference. It also tells me she’s important enough to be careful about her name.”

Caelen inclined his head slightly. He neither confirmed nor denied.

Bruce nodded. He had not expected confirmation. The fact that Caelen had declined to give a name without making the decline awkward was itself a piece of information, this was someone used to handling sensitive introductions for sensitive people.

”What does she want to talk about?” Bruce asked.

”She did not say. She instructed me only to extend the invitation and to make clear that she has no immediate request of you. She would like to know you. She would like you to know her. Whatever follows from that is to be discussed when you meet.”

”And if I decline?”

”Then I will return that response and you will not be troubled again by either of us. There is no penalty. There is no follow-up. There is no message left unread between us.”

It was, Bruce thought, the cleanest version of an approach he had ever heard.

Decline is a complete sentence. The old soul’s advice rang in his head with absolute clarity. The instinct said decline. Decline politely. Decline without explanation. The man had already told Bruce that decline would be honored without complication.

But Bruce, older, more careful, a man who had spent forty years learning when to follow a clean instinct and when to look just one moment longer, also noticed something else. He noticed that this approach was too clean. No factional pressure. No flattery. No leverage. The person who had sent Caelen had thought through, in advance, exactly what kind of approach would make Bruce most likely to accept. They had constructed the lowest-friction possible invitation. They knew what they were doing.

This either meant the person was unusually thoughtful and meant well, or that they were unusually thoughtful and intended to use that thoughtfulness as a vector. Bruce did not yet know which.

He did not have to decide today.

”I’ll think about it,” he said.

Caelen inclined his head once more. ”Thank you. May I return in two days for your answer?”

”Yes. The Guild’s main square. Late afternoon. I’ll be passing through. If you’re there, we can talk. If I haven’t decided, I’ll tell you that too.”

”That is acceptable. Thank you, hunter.”

He used the word hunter rather than Bruce’s name. He had not asked Bruce’s name. He probably already knew it. He was using the title because it was the role Bruce had presented to the city, and Caelen was professionally respecting that presentation rather than asserting any knowledge he might have collected.

Bruce found himself, faintly, impressed by the man.

”Caelen,” he said, before the man could turn.

”Yes?”

”You’re A-rank.”

”I am.”

”And you’ve been doing this work for some time.”

”I have.”

”How long?”

A small pause. Then a small almost-smile, the first real expression Caelen had shown.

”Long enough to be careful,” he said.

”That’s a good answer.”

”I have been told it is the only one I should give.”

He bowed slightly, a small gesture, not deep, not subservient, just a quiet acknowledgement of the conversation’s end, and turned and walked away across the portal square. He did not look back. He moved at the same easy pace at which he had approached. Within twenty paces, he was simply another soul moving through a busy square in the late morning, indistinguishable from any other working professional going about their day.

Bruce watched him until he disappeared around a corner.

Then he turned to Kael and Theron.

Both of them were looking at him with the alert quiet attention of two men who had been listening hard to every word.

”That was a quiet observer’s approach,” Bruce said.

”Cleanest one I’ve ever seen,” Kael said.

”Cleanest one I’ve ever heard described,” Theron added.

”We have two days to decide.”

”Two days for you to decide,” Kael said. ”He came for you. You’re the one being invited.”

Bruce thought about that.
