SSS-Ranked Surgeon In Another World: The Healer Is Actually OP!

The smell that filled the small space was unlike what one would think

He took the herb off and ate it first, as instructed by the old soul’s small gesture.

The herb tasted of stone and cold water and something green.

Then he ate the meat.

The first bite hit him like a thrown stone, but a soft one.

The essence in the alpha flank, prepared by the slow-cooking method the old soul had described, was organized. The raw alpha essence yesterday had hit him as a rolling wave, dense but disorganized, his soul-body absorbing what it could and probably wasting some at the edges. Tonight’s preparation arrived already broken down into the patterns his soul could absorb directly. There was no waste. Every fraction of the essence in the flank went into him cleanly.

The essence sank straight to his foundational layer.

He felt his core, his soul’s core, the dense center of his being, thicken. Not grow larger. Thicken. Compress. Become more itself, the way a slowly reduced sauce becomes more itself with each hour on the heat. He felt the layers of depth-essence he had built up over the previous days lock into place around the thickening core. He felt his soul-body’s foundation, which had been steadily building for days, settle in a new configuration that felt qualitatively different from anything before.

He felt the threshold.

It was right there. The line between F-rank and E-rank, present in him as a clearly felt limit, a wall in his soul that everything he had been doing for four days had been pressing against.

He set his spoon down.

The old soul, at their pot, said quietly, ”Hold.”

”Yes,” Bruce said.

”Sit with it. Do not push. Let it find its own moment.”

”Yes.”

Bruce closed his soul-body’s eyes.

He sat very still at the small table. The bowl of alpha flank was half-eaten in front of him. The energy of the meal was inside him, finding its place. He did not push it toward the wall. He let it move on its own timing. He focused on his breathing and the small clear silence inside himself and the awareness of the threshold.

Kael, beside him, had also stopped eating. He had also recognized what was happening, possibly to himself as well, possibly only to Bruce. He sat very still, watching.

Theron, across the table, had stopped too. His face was focused. His eyes were on his own bowl, which was also half-eaten. His own breathing had slowed.

The three of them sat at the small table in the old soul’s eatery, each in his own internal moment, while the alpha flank essence did its quiet work in each of them.

Bruce felt his soul press against the wall.

He did not push.

He waited.

The essence reached the wall and moved through it.

There was no breaking, no shattering. The wall, F-rank, the floor of his current condition, simply dissolved from underneath him as the foundational essence reached its right concentration, and he was no longer at F. He was at E. The new rank settled onto him without ceremony, the way a coat settles on a man’s shoulders when he puts it on.

His soul-body changed.

The glow brightened, not dramatically, but a real step. The substance of his soul-body felt different from a different angle. The interior chamber of his soul, which had been small and simple at F, expanded slightly. There was more room in him now, more capacity, more space for everything he would build going forward.

He opened his eyes.

The old soul was looking at him.

”E-rank,” they said. It was not a question.

”E-rank,” Bruce confirmed.

The old soul nodded slowly. They went back to their pot. They did not make a fuss. They were the kind of person who had watched many souls cross many thresholds and did not need to celebrate any of them.

Kael, across from Bruce, was breathing carefully. His face was focused. He had felt his own rank-change happen, Bruce could see it in the small bright difference in him, but a second or two after Bruce’s. The demon held his hands flat on the table for a few seconds, accepting it.

Then he opened his eyes.

”E-rank,” he said, with his own quiet satisfaction.

”E-rank,” Bruce agreed.

They both looked at Theron.

Theron was still sitting with his eyes closed. His breathing was slow. His face was very focused. He was, Bruce could see this clearly, right at the threshold, but not yet through it. The alpha flank’s essence in him was doing the same work it had done in Bruce and Kael, but slower. He had been at slightly lower peak-F than they had. He needed a little more.

The old soul, watching this from their pot, simply set a second very small spoonful of alpha flank onto Theron’s bowl. Wordlessly. Without breaking Theron’s concentration.

Theron, without opening his eyes, ate it.

The pause continued for several more seconds.

Then Theron’s whole posture settled in the same way Bruce’s and Kael’s had. The same small soft sigh of a soul moving across a threshold. The same brightening of the glow.

He opened his eyes.

He smiled, slightly, quietly. The reaper at the edge of the field had been a tax clerk five years ago, and a corpse three years ago, and an F-rank one minute ago, and was now an E-rank soul-hunter sitting at a small table in a strange city in a strange realm with two strange friends who had carried him across.

”E-rank,” he said.

”E-rank,” the other two said, almost together.

The old soul, at the pot, made a small sound that might have been a laugh.

”All three of you in one meal,” they said. ”Now that is unusual.”

They finished the rest of the alpha flank with the slow appreciation it deserved.

The threshold-crossing did not change the flavor. The meat was still the meat, the sauce was still the sauce, but the meaning of it had changed. Each bite, now that the rank advancement had completed, was no longer pushing them toward something. It was simply nourishing them, settling them into their new condition, helping the new rank consolidate.

They ate slowly. They drank the soul-clarifier the old soul served them at the end without being asked. The clarifier’s effect on a freshly-advanced soul was significantly different from a regular soul. Bruce felt it pull the new essence into cleaner alignment, the way fresh paint dries faster in good air.

When they finished, the old soul came to the table.

”Three E-rank hunters in one meal,” they said. ”I have served this place for two hundred years and I have done that exactly four times. You are the fourth occasion.”

”What happened to the other three?” Kael asked.

”The first was a hundred and ninety years ago. Two of those three became Spire-district patrons. One died in a contested bounty seven months later.”

”The second?”

”A hundred and fifty years ago. All three of them ranked through to A within a decade. One is on the Nonagon now.”

”And the third?”

”Forty years ago. All three died at C, in the same incident. A patron of theirs sold them out for political reasons. They went into a bounty they were not ready for.”

The old soul looked at the three of them with the calm gaze of someone who was telling them a true thing because it was useful, not because it was pleasant.

”The middle outcome is the most common. The first outcome is rarer. The third outcome is rarer still, but it happens. The difference, in my observation, is usually how the three of them handle the attention their early advancement attracts. The Spire-district patrons in the first group stayed independent. The Nonagon member in the second group resisted three bounty offers and two factional offers in their first year. The dead three in the third group accepted patronage from a Spire noble who used them.”

”Are you saying,” Bruce said carefully, ”that the offers from yesterday’s pattern are likely to come faster than I thought?”

”Three E-rank advancements in four days,” the old soul said simply, ”will be known in Xiltra by tomorrow morning. The exchange clerk will write a report. The Guild will note your rank-up in its records. The records have eyes on them. The eyes will come to you.”

”How fast?”

”Within the week.”

The three of them sat with that.

”What do we do?” Theron asked. ”When the eyes come?”

”Decline. Politely. All of them. Without explanation. Decline is a complete sentence. Anyone who pushes for an explanation is showing their hand. Anyone who accepts the decline gracefully is at least a little trustworthy. Anyone who escalates after a decline is your enemy and has just identified themselves.”

Bruce considered this.

It was, he realized, listening to the old soul, exactly what his physical-realm master had once told him about navigating the political layer of medical institutions. Decline is a complete sentence. He had heard a version of that sentence in his own past life. The old soul was not telling him anything he did not already know in principle. They were simply telling him that the principle applied here too, and was about to be tested.

”Decline,” he said.

”Decline?.”

”Even the ones who seem kind?”

”Especially the ones who seem kind. Kindness without context is the cheapest weapon in this city.”

Kael laughed quietly. ”I like the way you put things.”

”I have had years to practice.”

They paid for the meal. They thanked the old soul. They stepped out into the deep blue-gold of the night.
