SSS-Ranked Surgeon In Another World: The Healer Is Actually OP!

Kael nodded into his stew. ”I’m fine with stone. The alpha rollers were good fights. I want to learn the spine-roller pattern better. I had to improvise a lot yesterday. Today I want to be ready for it.”

”Good. Then stone it is.”

The decision was made simply, between the three of them, in the way decisions had begun to be made: someone proposed, someone evaluated, the others confirmed or pushed back, and they moved on. There was no friction in it anymore. The party dynamic had settled.

Bruce appreciated this in the way an older man appreciates almost anything that works without effort. He had spent decades in his physical-realm career working with teams that had to be carefully managed at every turn. The fact that this team simply worked, that Kael and Theron and he had fallen into a working rhythm by the third day, was not nothing. It was, in fact, rare.

He filed that gratitude too.

The walk to the stone portal felt different today.

It was not the route. The route was the same one they had taken yesterday. It was the attention. Bruce was watching for the quiet observers the old soul had warned him about, and now that he was looking, he could see them.

Not many. Two or three across the whole walk from the rooming house to the portal district. But they were there. A soul on a stoop with a piece of bread, who happened to look up as they passed and held the look for one beat longer than incidental. A soul in a doorway of a craft-shop, who was not actually buying anything, who tracked them with the corner of his eye as they crossed the square in front of the shop. A soul leaning on a wall reading what looked like a soul-paper notice, whose paper did not move during the entire time the three of them walked past, and whose attention was not actually on the paper at all.

Bruce did not make eye contact with any of them.

He did not slow his pace. He did not signal to Kael or Theron. He simply walked, registered each one, filed them, and continued.

By the time they reached the stone portal’s square, he had three faces memorized. None of them had moved to approach. None of them had spoken. They had simply watched.

The B-rank guard at the stone portal was at her post.

She watched them come up. Her eyes went to their fingers and saw the rings. She did not say anything about it. She nodded once and waved them through.

”Same level?” she asked, as they pressed tokens.

”Same level,” Bruce confirmed.

”Two-core alpha drops once a week at best. Don’t expect to find another today.”

”We won’t expect it. We’ll hunt regular and accept what we find.”

”Good.” She made her note. ”There’s a chamber in the far back of the level, past the fourth split, that some of the more advanced F-rank parties work for the larger crab clusters. It’s a longer walk but it pays. You’re past the point of needing it sold to you.”

”Thank you for telling us.”

”Mm.”

They stepped through the portal.

The cold of the stone dungeon felt familiar today.

It was the second time they had entered, and Bruce noticed that his soul-body adjusted to the temperature change faster than yesterday. The dry stone-old air did not press on him the way it had on first entry. He was, in some small way, more at home here than he had been twenty-four hours ago. The essence he had absorbed yesterday had given him a foundational connection to this terrain that the heat dungeon had not given him, and now that connection was reading the place as familiar territory.

Kael felt the opposite, slightly.

Bruce saw it in the small wariness on the demon’s face as he stepped through. Kael’s natural alignment was with the heat dungeon. The stone dungeon’s cold did not feed his talent the way the heat did; if anything it slightly muted it. He could fight here, he had fought well here yesterday, but the dungeon did not give him the small free boost the heat dungeon had given him.

Theron, interestingly, was somewhere in the middle. His talent was not elementally tied to either terrain. The scythe worked the same in either place. But there was, Bruce noticed, a small settling in Theron’s posture as he stepped into the stone dungeon, the same kind of settling Bruce had felt himself. The reaper-at-the-edge-of-the-field concept that Theron had been turning over since yesterday seemed to fit this terrain in a way the heat dungeon had not. The stone dungeon was a quieter place, suited to the kind of work Theron’s talent was beginning to look like it wanted to do.

”Let’s go,” Bruce said.

They moved into the dungeon.

The hunt today went faster than yesterday’s.

They had the pattern down now. Bruce led, scanning for the sound-sources, the clicking of crab clusters, the grinding of rollers, and choosing approach angles. Kael handled the rollers, using his improved fire-lance technique on the seam at the base of the spine-roller’s neck during the uncurl window. Theron managed the crab packs with the boundary technique, which was getting cleaner by the hour. Bruce worked his ink for whatever the others didn’t take.

They cleared three crab clusters and two roller packs in the first ninety minutes.

The essence flowed in steadily, the small wash of foundational depth-essence each kill provided, adding up over time. Bruce could feel his soul-body building in a deliberate direction, not growing wider, not flashing brighter, but settling. Becoming more solid. The same kind of slow advancement a cultivator in the physical realm experienced when grinding through a stable plateau before a breakthrough.

He was in the plateau. The breakthrough was close.

Around the second hour, while they were resting briefly between cluster fights, Bruce did something he had been thinking about all morning.

He took out his small ring’s contents on a flat patch of stone, laid them out, and experimented with the ink.

Not bullets. Not nets. He drew a single line with his finger through the air and tried, deliberately, to write his own name.

The first attempt failed.

The ink came out fine, it followed his finger the way it had always followed his finger, but when he tried to shape it into the actual letters of Bruce, the talent resisted. The letters formed jaggedly. They did not commit themselves into hardened script the way the circle had committed itself into a shield. The ink stayed inky. Loose. Half-formed.

He tried again.

He tried more slowly. He tried thinking the letters as he drew them, putting his full intent into the shape of each one. The ink followed his finger but still did not commit. Bruce hung in the air in his own handwriting, recognizable but soft, like words written in actual ink on actual paper that had not yet dried.

He frowned.

Kael, watching from a few paces away, said: ”You can write your name. So what’s wrong?”

”It’s not finishing. The shapes won’t harden. Earlier I drew a circle and it became a real solid construct. The word Bruce won’t do that.”

”Try something else. A different word.”

Bruce thought about it.

He drew the word up, deliberately, in the air. Small, simple, two letters.

The ink committed.

The word up hung in the air, hard and dark and real, the letters as solid as the circle had been. He poked one of them with his finger. It pushed back. It was a real construct.

He stared at it.

”What did you change?” Theron asked, who had also come over.

”I drew a word that meant something specific. Up, direction, motion, intent. The talent wrote it as a real object.”

”And your name.”

”My name is just a label. It doesn’t mean anything by itself. It refers to me, but it doesn’t do anything.” He dispelled the up. ”The talent isn’t about writing letters. It’s about writing intentions. Words that have meaning the realm can process. Words that act.”

Kael’s eyes had gone bright. ”Try another.”

Bruce thought.

He drew the word open.

The ink committed. The word hung there. He looked at it for a long moment, considering. Then he turned, faced one of the spine-roller carcasses they had not yet butchered, and pushed the floating word open toward it with a slow steady motion of his palm.

The word moved through the air, slow at first, then faster as he pushed harder. It struck the carcass square in the back. There was a small dry sound, and the spine-roller’s shell-plates opened, parting at the seam down the back, the natural joint Kael had been trying to find with his blade earlier in the week, splitting wide and clean like a book.

The three of them stood very still.

”Bruce,” Kael said, very carefully. ”Did you just word-open a spine-roller carcass.”

”I did.”

”Without cutting.”

”Without cutting.”

”Bruce.”

”I know.”
