Rebirth in the 90s: Her Counterattack and Redemption

Chapter 1232 - 738: The Unlucky Doctor Daoter

Liu Yumei’s action actually made Luo Ye feel a faint goodwill toward her; from their first meeting till now, her impression of her had never been particularly good.

At the very beginning, getting close to her and Zhao Qianqian was entirely to help Wang Mingli scout for information, or to put it bluntly, to curry favor with Yao Wen Yuan.

Later, as they interacted more, she did give up that idea, even helped cover for them a few times, but with that initial mistake there, it was always hard to become real friends.

This time, though the other woman said she was doing it to ease Mr. Wang’s worries, wasn’t she also seizing a chance for promotion? But you couldn’t say she was wrong for that; what Luo Ye didn’t like was just the hypocritical way she covered it up.

Yet in this instant, that small move of hers suddenly made the earlier mistakes seem trivial. After all, for this performance, city leaders and some provincial leaders would all be attending; if anything really went wrong, as the person in overall charge of coordination, Luo Ye’s future would probably be ruined right here, and there was no way Liu Yumei didn’t understand that.

Under these circumstances, the fact that she could still put Zhao Qianqian’s safety first could only mean she was, at heart, a kind girl.

”Sister Liu...” Luo Ye grabbed hold of Liu Yumei. ”The taxi driver who took Qianqian is someone we know, nothing will happen.”

”You’ve only been here a few days. How well can you possibly know him? Luoluo, you two are way too naive. With faces like yours and Qianqian’s, which man would see you and not get ideas?

Going that far out in the middle of the night—who can guarantee that so-called ’acquaintance’ won’t have bad intentions?” Liu Yumei let out a soft sigh. ”Come on, my cousin has a van. We’ll get him to help out, and at least we’ll have a bit more courage. Let’s just hope we’re not too late.”

The real situation couldn’t be told, and persuading Liu Yumei was actually a bit tricky. After thinking it over, Luo Ye came up with an idea: ”Sister Liu, why don’t we bring the program list with us?”

Liu Yumei nodded again and again. ”Good, that’s a good idea, we can kill two birds with one stone. Luoluo, pack up everything and put it away, I’ll call my cousin.”

Liu Yumei’s cousin, Liu Yulong, was a man in his early thirties, about 180 centimeters tall, sturdily built and dark-skinned, with a simple, honest look.

When he saw Luo Ye, he just chuckled twice and then had nothing more to say.

”My cousin doesn’t like to talk,” Liu Yumei explained, then pulled Luo Ye into the van. On the road, Liu Yulong drove in silence, while Luo Ye and Liu Yumei huddled in the back, carefully working out how to arrange the running order of the program.

”If we show it to Mr. Wang tomorrow, will there still be time?” Luo Ye asked in puzzlement.

”Originally Mr. Wang was supposed to arrange it together with us, but the city leaders came, so he had to go accompany them. Who knows what time they’ll wrap things up, so this job could only be handed over to me.” Liu Yumei looked helpless. ”These past few years, we’ve had very few new people join the troupe. The older ones, once they know there’s no room to move up, can’t be bothered to get involved in this stuff. As for taking part in performances, if it weren’t for their retirement pensions, I’d bet most of them wouldn’t want to be involved either.”

”Being transferred here really is pretty much like being exiled for the two of us,” Luo Ye sighed.

”To be honest, when we first got the transfer notice for you two, everyone here was baffled. With your age, looks, and abilities, what kind of huge mistake would you have to make to get sent here?

But later, after watching how you handle things, I came to understand. With that personality and temper of yours, you really aren’t suited to stay in a big place.

Only our little troupe has no real personnel struggles, just a few old members who like to put on airs and make things hard for people every now and then, which doesn’t really count as much.

As for Qianqian, you can only say she was unlucky. In terms of dealing with people, she’s much smoother and more flexible than you, but this hurdle of ’being well matched’ in family background really is hard to cross.”

So her performance really had worked quite well. The corners of Luo Ye’s lips curled up. ”Your analysis is pretty spot-on, Sister Liu. I’ll be honest too: when we first got here and saw you running around helping Director Wang, we were really not happy about it.”

”I didn’t have much choice either. Besides, people in general all share one flaw: they tend to reject newcomers who are younger and prettier than themselves. I’m no exception.

But later, once I got to know you two better, I stopped thinking that way. As for me helping persuade people, it doesn’t really make much difference. In the end, it still depends on you two yourselves, right?”

”That’s true.” Luo Ye nodded, then changed the subject. ”With the kind of programs we have—same old stuff for a thousand years—it’s going to be hard to outshine the outside troupes.”

”What can we do? The troupe’s budget is limited. Anyone with a bit of talent and connections has already left. The ones left behind are all the old, weak, sick, and lame, just relying on their salaries to get by.
