Rebirth in the 90s: Her Counterattack and Redemption

Chapter 717: Chapter 427: Grandpa

The Ye Mansion’s back courtyard.

Great Grandpa was lying on a chair, cuddling with Hei and basking in the sun when he suddenly opened his eyes and picked up his cane to tap on the ground: ”Nanny Lu, help me to the front courtyard.”

”Yes, Grandpa, I’ll help you there right away,” Nanny Lu answered joyfully. Recently, Grandpa had caught a cold which lingered for nearly a month before he finally recovered.

Since then, he had been lazy about moving around, spending his days either sunbathing or sleeping. For him to take the initiative to go for a walk today was really unprecedented.

In the front yard’s main hall, Old Master Ye was casually chatting with a bunch of younger generations when he saw Nanny Lu helping Grandpa in. He hurriedly went to welcome them, and the other youngsters quickly stood up, respectfully greeting him.

After helping Grandpa, Old Master Ye said with a face full of joy: ”Dad, what brings you here?”

Grandpa swept a glance at his son, huffing: ”Xiao San, what, do you mean to suggest I can’t come over here?”

”No, no, Dad, I was just happy to see you. It’s a great joy for you to proactively come over for a visit,” Old Master Ye hastily explained.

”I’m not here to see you.” Grandpa poked him with his cane, ”My little granddaughter-in-law is coming.”

”Dad, you must be missing Ye’er too much, right? She’s set to get married to Xiao Xuan on Chu Jiu. Even if she comes over to our family, it won’t be until after Chu Jiu. Don’t rush, Dad, on the day of the proposal, let’s all go to the Wen Family together. You can also go and bathe in the Wen Family’s famous Divine Spring, how about that?”

Grandpa glanced at his son: ”Hmph!”

”Dad...” Old Master Ye looked at his father, who was acting like a child, and coaxed him softly, ”Dad, why don’t you let the younger ones keep you company for a while, alright?”

Grandpa tapped the floor with his cane: ”Nanny Lu, help me over to the doorway to sit.”

Old Master Ye quickly begged for mercy: ”Alright, alright, Dad, I won’t bother you anymore.”

Grandpa pointed his cane at Zhan Ping: ”You, come sit with me.”

Ye Jian, Second Uncle’s son, silently curled his lips and looked at Zhan Ping with jealousy. Why did the elders all favor Zhan Ping so much? Just because he didn’t grow up in the Ye family, did he deserve so much love?

”Xiao Jian, watch yourself,” Ye Qinglian poked her brother. ”Old Master sees everything.”

”Favoritism,” Ye Jian muttered softly.

Ye Qinghe gave him a reproachful look: ”Your mind’s too small.”

”Who are you talking about?” Ye Jian’s voice suddenly rose.

”Get out, all of you!” Old Master Ye looked angrily at the group, ”Is this how you welcome Great Grandpa? If this family can’t handle you all, feel free to leave. I definitely won’t stop you!”

”Grandpa, don’t be angry. Shuoshuo will give you a shoulder rub,” Ye Shuo, Uncle Jiu’s son, hurriedly approached, rubbing Old Master Ye’s shoulders to please him.

”You old man, why such a temper? The kids are just fussing and playing together, let them be,” said Great Grandma, patting Shuoshuo, ”Shuoshuo is a good boy.”

”That’s right!” Shuoshuo perked up proudly, ”Who has ever seen someone as handsome, kind-hearted, loved by all, a joy at every meeting...”

”Stop, stop, stop!” Qin He interrupted him quickly, ”Even Big Cousin never dared boast like that, aren’t you scared the wind might snap your tongue?”

”Big Cousin is number one in the world; I’m just behind him. I must follow in Big Cousin’s footsteps, march on, march on, keep on marching...”

”This child,” Great Grandma smacked him, ”Really able to horse around.”

Shuoshuo giggled: ”If I can bring a smile to Great Grandpa and Grandparents, whatever I do is worth it!”

”You too, come over here,” Great Grandpa gestured to him with his cane.

”Great Grandpa, you finally noticed me?” Shuoshuo rushed over, rubbing Great Grandpa’s shoulders, ”To be liked by the immortal-like Great Grandpa shows how charming I am, how...”

Ye Qinghe interrupted him speechlessly: ”Okay, okay, enough of your smugness!”

Shuoshuo winked at her mischievously, smiling cunningly: ”Third sister, you’re just jealous, Great Grandpa likes me but not you, therefore, you are jealous.”

Second Aunt Si Yue suddenly said: ”Dad, Mom, there’s something I didn’t want to say, but I’ve heard quite a few rumors recently, and I think it’s better to mention it.”

Old Master Ye looked at her and nodded: ”What is it, just speak.”

”The matter of Xiao Xuan and Luo Ye’s marriage proposal, I really shouldn’t interfere, but ever since the location for the proposal was set, there’s been an increase in rumors outside.

They say us going to the Wen family for the proposal shows Xiao Xuan is marrying into their family, and that the Ye family is taking advantage of the Wen’s Divine Spring....”

”No need to say more,” Old Master Ye interrupted her, ”I know about this issue, and it’s not a big deal. Those people are just jealous, that’s all.

The hearts of people have always been like this, they can’t enter the Wen family, and seeing that we have the opportunity, they just chatter away. If we really believed that, we would fall into their trap.

You bring this up now, and if we react upon your words, wouldn’t that clearly put us at odds with the Wen family? Let’s drop this matter here; no one is allowed to mention it again.”

”Anyway, I just feel that this way, it’s clear that our son is being raised for someone else,” Si Yue said, glancing at the always quiet Su Sha, her eyeballs rolling, ”Su Sha, what do you think?”

Seeing no response, Si Yue repeated, ”Su Sha, what’s your take on this matter? Su Sha, Su Sha?...”

”Huh?” Su Sha looked at her in confusion, ”What did my sister-in-law say?”

Si Yue looked at her speechlessly: ”What are you thinking about? Your son is getting engaged in less than a month, and everyone is gossiping that he’s marrying into the bride’s family. As his mother, how can you be so indifferent?”

A shadow flickered in Su Sha’s eyes, and she replied, ”Well, that’s up to Dad to decide.”

Old Master Ye looked displeasedly at Si Yue: ”For matters concerning the second branch of the family, there are some things I need not point out too clearly. You should know yourself, don’t worry about what you shouldn’t – save it.”

”I understand, Dad,” Si Yue quickly responded.

Old Master Ye’s gaze flickered to Grandpa, who seemed to be dozing off again, and hurriedly said: ”Dad, if you’re tired, you should go rest for a while. At lunchtime, I’ll personally help you over, okay?”

”No, waiting for my future granddaughter-in-law,” Grandpa blinked forcefully, ”I’m not sleepy.”

”Dad...” Old Master Ye looked helplessly at his own father, wondering to himself what could be wrong with Grandpa... Suddenly, his heart trembled - since catching a cold, Grandpa’s health had been fluctuating, and now he was having this delusion, could it be...

”What’s the matter, old man?” Sensing his sudden tension, Grandma asked in confusion, reaching out to feel his forehead.

”I’m fine,” Old Master Ye waved his hand, letting out a sigh, his eyes full of worry as he stared at Grandpa.

”You’re worried that...” Grandma understood as well and her face changed.

”It’s not certain, I’m just speculating,” Old Master Ye quickly comforted her.

Si Yue, Su Sha, Ye Qinglian, Ye Jian, Ye Shuo, Ye Qingcha, Zhan Ping, and others, realized what the elder couple was implying, and their expressions as they looked at Grandpa were all different.

For a split second, everyone felt as if Grandpa had looked at each of them with an understanding gaze...

While they were silent, Uncle Wang, the butler, came running over to report: ”Young Master and Miss Ye’er have returned.”

”Really?” A wave of joy surged through Old Master Ye, who suddenly stood up. His gaze towards Grandpa was full of admiration and delight, this Grandpa was truly miraculous!

”Hehe, my future granddaughter-in-law is here,” Grandpa glanced at his son with pride, ”Xiao San, you lose.”

”Yes! Yes! Yes! Dad is wise,” Old Master Ye quickly responded.

Grandma poked the ground with her cane, ”Let’s go greet the future granddaughter-in-law.”

Zhan Ping and Ye Shuo quickly helped him up and headed out. ”I haven’t met my future sister-in-law yet; I must have a good look at what kind of girl has captured my brother’s heart so devotedly, hehe...” Ye Shuo mumbled as they walked.

”She’s indeed a great match for big brother,” Zhan Ping said.

Seeing the Ye family coming out to welcome them from afar, Luo Ye hurried her pace to meet them: ”Great Grandpa, Grandpa, Grandma, Aunt Su, Second Aunt, good...”

After greeting everyone, and noticing Grandpa squinting and smiling at her, Luo Ye pouted on purpose: ”Great Grandpa, you’re not pretending to not recognize me, are you?”

Grandpa blinked proudly, ”My future granddaughter-in-law, Ye’er.”

”Great Grandpa...” Luo Ye’s face was filled with surprise, ”You actually remember so clearly?”

Nanny Lu smiled, ”Grandpa was enjoying the sun when he suddenly had me bring him to the front yard, saying he wanted to wait for his future granddaughter-in-law.”

Old Master Ye followed up, ”Right, I thought Grandpa was just imagining things, but who would’ve thought it was really you guys coming back.”

”Great Grandpa, you’re so good to me,” Luo Ye held Grandpa’s arm, ”Great Grandpa, are you tired? Should I help you to rest, or would you like to sit in the hall for a while?”

Ye Xuan stepped forward to hold Grandpa’s other arm, ”Great Grandpa, what about me? Have you forgotten your grandson now that you’ve seen your granddaughter-in-law?”

”No!” Grandpa laughed, ”I want the granddaughter-in-law!”

Grandma looked at Luo Ye with a chuckle: ”Ye’er, I’ve never seen Grandpa this fond of someone in all the years I’ve been married into the Ye family.”

Su Sha’s face darkened; ever since she married into the family, Grandpa was never quite satisfied with her, let alone after his memory had declined.

Si Yue asked with a smile: ”Ye’er, your engagement is set for the ninth, why did you come today?”

”There’s a bit of work to do,” Luo Ye smiled at her, ”Does Second Aunt mean to say I’m not welcome here?”

Ye Qinglian frowned disapprovingly, ”Luo Ye, how can you talk to my mom like that? Don’t think you can disrespect everyone just because Great Grandpa dotes on you.”

Ever since Grandpa sat down in the hall, she hadn’t felt good; why should a stranger, not yet married into the family, receive Grandpa’s affection like this?

If things kept going this way, what status would their family have left in the Ye household once she married in? Mom was right, they needed to intimidate the other side from the start.

This young lady looked delicate and weak, but she was certainly not as easy to control as Su Sha. Therefore, showing assertiveness was a must!
