Rebirth in the 90s: Her Counterattack and Redemption

Chapter 294: Chapter 168: Labor (2)

”I forgot about the bunk above.” Xing Nong looked towards Ye Qingzhu with an embarrassed smile, ”Instructor, hehe...”

Ye Qingzhu quickly concealed the surprise in her eyes, ”Everyone take some time to read through the regulations and rules. Today we can make an exception, but in the future, during non-rest periods, sitting or lying on the bed is not allowed.

After you tidy up, hurry up to have lunch. Lunch break is half an hour; if you’re late, there will be no food left and you’ll have to go hungry. Gather at the West Playground at one o’clock in the afternoon.

The temporary squad leader for Class Three will be acted by Yu Na for now. We’ll hold a collective election after a while. Yu Na, come to the office with me!”

”Yes!” Yu Na stood up straight and followed Ye Qingzhu out of the dormitory.

”Why her? That’s so undemocratic!” Yao Juanjuan complained as she straightened up and marched with a military step, ”Sisters, look, how am I any worse than her?”

”...”

...

On the West Playground, over a hundred people were busy cleaning up. The boys shoveled grass while the girls cleaned up the cut grass and moved it to the garbage trucks at the entrance.

The specific work areas were meticulously divided; each male class was paired with a female class, and the class that finished first could rest early.

All the new students who entered this year were born in the eighties; at home, they were all coddled like little emperors and Little Princesses. They had never done such manual work before. As soon as Captain Xiang finished the assignment, the place was filled with complaints.

Class Three that Luo Ye was in paired up with the boys from Class Seven. After meeting each other, they got to know one another. Among the eight boys from Class Seven was an old acquaintance of Luo Ye, Liu Xing, and the others were:

Zhan Hao, from Beijing, the acting squad leader for Class Seven, a handsome and charismatic guy;

Wu Zetian, a BMW guy from the local area, with a bit of a bad boy look;

Zhang Dongjian, a local as well, not as handsome as the Korean star Zhang Dongjian, but still quite good-looking;

Zhang Youhan, from Eastern Sichuan, dark-skinned and robust, full of vitality;

Li Sicheng, from a village in Yunnan, ordinary-looking and a bit dull;

Wang Gang, from Yishui, with no particular features, the kind that didn’t stand out even after a second glance;

Yang Yu, from Ludong, not very handsome, but endowed with the robustness and valor of a Ludong man.

”What do you think, isn’t the school too much? They just let the weeds on the playground grow like this without cleaning them, and on our very first day of reporting, they pushed us out here without even letting us catch our breath, treating us like beasts?” Wu Zetian stood for a while, shoveled a couple of times, and sat down on the ground with his bottom.

Zhan Hao poked Wu Zetian with the shovel handle, ”Empress Dowager, hurry up and get to work. If you laze around and dump your share onto the brothers, that’s even worse!”

”Li Sicheng...” Wu Zetian approached the hardest-working Li Sicheng, ”Let’s make a deal, you do my share of work, and I’ll give you 100 yuan, how about it?”

”That doesn’t seem right?” Li Sicheng looked hesitant but tempted.

”What’s not right about it? In a consumer society, any transaction is legitimate. You do the work, I pay the money, nothing could be more fair.” Wu Zetian took out a banknote and handed it to Li Sicheng, ”Here, the money’s paid upfront, and the work is yours.”

Li Sicheng pulled back his hand, then extended it again and took the 100 yuan note, ”Okay, I’ll do it.” But in his heart, he was thinking about sending the money back home via the post office.

Zhan Hao just smiled without saying anything. After all, it was the first day of school, and his authority as the acting squad leader wasn’t yet established, and besides, Wu Zetian’s argument did seem to have some merit.

”Hey, help me carry the grass out!” Yao Juanjuan poked Wu Zetian, who was sitting on the ground, ”A grown man sitting here like this, it’s going to make people laugh.”

”You just don’t want to dirty your pretty clothes, right?” Wu Zetian glanced at Yao Juanjuan, ”I’ve encountered plenty of girls like you, all delicate as if you’re Miss Riches, thinking every guy should adore and pamper you. But the question is, why?”

”You’re such a woman!” Yao Juanjuan, after being criticized, angrily grabbed a bunch of grass and then quickly threw it down, ”Cough cough... What if I catch tuberculosis from this?”

”One can tell you’re uneducated; that disease isn’t caused by choking. In the past, it was seen as a disease of poverty, caused by malnutrition. Now, those who are rich enough not to know hard work can still get it. That’s right, someone like you might indeed catch it, so I’ll keep my distance!” Wu Zetian said, standing up and moving a bit, conveniently sitting next to Yu Na, with a cheeky smile, ”Squad Leader Yu, need any help?”

”Getting your own work done is the right thing to do,” replied Yu Na coldly, giving the other a glance.

”Miss Yu, as a longtime schoolmate, ah..., never mind, I won’t say anything about you.” Wu Zetian’s words were met with a cold response from Yu Na.

Xing Nong threw grass into the garbage truck, patted the dirt off her body, and looked at Luo Ye and Yaoguang with a pained expression, ”Are we going to be dealing with soil, mud, and grass for the next four years? Don’t you feel a bit of regret?”

Luo Ye snorted, ”This is just the tip of the iceberg. Didn’t Grandpa Yan, the Military Commander, tell you about the life at the military academy?”

”He did, but since we hit it off, I dove right in. Luoluo, you better be good to me in the future or you’re betraying all my efforts!”

Luo Ye pinched Xing Nong’s cheek, ”You’re getting more absurd by the second. If you keep this up, what, am I going to turn into Qin Shimei?”

”Ew, you got dirt from the grass all over your hands. You’ve dirtied my beautiful tender face. No, let me pinch you too!” Xing Nong stretched out her little paws towards Luo Ye, but as Luo Ye quickly dodged, Xing Nong’s paw ended up pinching the arm of... Ye Qingzhu, who suddenly appeared.

”Instructor!” Xing Nong quickly stood up straight.

”Hurry up and get back to work!”

Ye Qingzhu’s gaze paused on Luo Ye’s face, ”Luo Ye, come with me for a moment.”
