She Lives without Regret in This Life

Chapter 485: Chapter 498: Hitting the Child for No Reason

In the sunroom, Mr. Su would still spank his children once a day as usual. Spanking had become such a habit that he would feel oddly anxious on days when he didn’t!

“Still haven’t brought her back, what use are you to me?” Mr. Su said, knocking his cane on Su Hai’s body as he spoke. He didn’t use much strength, but Su Hai’s expression was pitifully miserable!

“Dad, we can’t rush this. We abandoned her for eighteen years. You want to bring her back in just a few days. It’s not that easy, is it?”

“…” Mr. Su fell silent. Sadness spread across his aged face, prompting Su Hai to turn away, unable to bear the sight.

“Dad! Don’t worry, Ningning is getting married during the New Year, and we’ll all be there then.”

“Really?” Mr. Su’s eyes lit up. He asked incredulously, “You’re not deceiving me?” He was getting on in years, and his two sons wouldn’t allow him to go out as he pleased anymore.

“I wouldn’t deceive you. How could I dare to?” Su Hai touched the spot where he had just been hit, his mouth twitching uncontrollably.

“If you don’t dare, who would?” Mr. Su thought of the past deceit by Su Huili and felt a surge of anger. He thrashed Su Hai with his cane.

Poor Su Hai didn’t even dare to dodge, for fear that Mr. Su might miss and get even angrier, potentially fainting from rage.

“You tell me? Haven’t you been deceiving people since you were young? How many times have I been tricked by you?”

“Dad, those were all white lies,” Su Hai corrected. He certainly didn’t admit to deceiving anyone.

“Nothing but nonsense, you scoundrel! You even dare to trick your own father. What wouldn’t you dare to do? Now, whenever I hear you talk, I can only believe a third of it. The rest I’ll take with reservation.”

“Dad, being deceived isn’t something to be proud of, let’s not talk about it!”

“Why can’t I talk about it?” Mr. Su glared.

“Well, you shouldn’t say it in front of your son-in-law, right?” Su Hai glanced over at Meng Xingzhi, who was standing by the door.

Mr. Su’s face reddened. He hastily adjusted his expression and coughed twice forcefully.

Seeing this, Su Hai couldn’t help but turn his head and snicker.

“Xingzhi, why are you here?” This son-in-law, moving so quietly? Doesn’t he know to knock when entering? So impolite! Hmph!

“Dad! I came to see you and also to discuss something with you,” Meng Xingzhi spoke calmly, apparently not having heard the verbal spar between his father-in-law and brother-in-law, nor the fact that his father-in-law was at a disadvantage, avoiding a continued awkward situation for Mr. Su.

He really was a gentleman of great temperament!

Upon hearing this, Su Hai quickly stood up, agile. “Brother-in-law, please take a seat. I’ll get you a glass of water.” It seemed the talk was the main purpose, and the visit was just by the way. He had a bad feeling—Meng Xingzhi couldn’t be here to talk about divorcing his sister, could he?

Although his sister was quite willful and a bit selfish, she wasn’t a bad person, nor did she ever intentionally hurt anyone! He hoped Meng Xingzhi was truly a noble gentleman and would not broach the subject of divorce now.

If he did, then the Su family would surely have its hands full. It might even provide enough drama for others to watch until the New Year.

Meng Xingzhi gave Su Hai a reassuring smile, offering a look of comfort. Then he sat opposite Mr. Su. “Dad, I’m here to invite you to an event.”

“What event?” Mr. Su’s eyes shone. He declined all events except for the annual national celebration. What event did this lad want to invite him to?

“Let’s hear it. If it’s really something good, I might attend.”

“You’ll definitely want to attend, Dad,” Meng Xingzhi said confidently. Just then, Su Hai approached, carrying a glass of water, which Meng Xingzhi took and continued, “You know about the mission to Country S, right?”
