She Lives without Regret in This Life

Chapter 148: Chapter 148: Called for a Talk

The fog enveloped the mountain this morning, a vast expanse of white before our eyes. The broad track was filled with silent, fast-moving women from the General Union Dance Troupe.

Different from the chatter and laughter that had filled the previous days.

For the past three days, a shadow had been cast over the entire General Union Dance Troupe. Their intense training had come to a halt, except for the exercises diligently led by Dai Bin, while all other activities were suspended.

The day before yesterday, Yang Wenying and Su Hai had come together, taking Zhao Feifei away with them, and there had been no news since.

Everyone knew as well as a polished mirror, considering the mistake Zhao Feifei had made, being expelled from the General Union would be letting her off lightly. Whether she would be sent to the union court was hard to say.

Those who had been close with Zhao Feifei, who had played with her, were quick to distance themselves for fear of being implicated.

...

Under such circumstances, everyone threw themselves into training with renewed vigor, unafraid of hard work and exhaustion.

There was a general improvement in overall individual quality and performance level. Dai Bin always looked happy, feeling the pressure in his heart release somewhat.

Twenty laps, and not a single person lagged behind, a rarity among the female comrades.

“Who is Sheng Ning?” A cold, hard voice rang out through the thick fog.

The marching group came to a brisk, uniform halt at the sound.

“Atten-hut, at ease!” Dai Bin called out loudly.

Sheng Ning stepped out from the ranks with perfect posture and walked towards the source of the voice, declaring crisply, “Reporting, I am Sheng Ning.”

“I am from the General Union Inspection Department. Come with me!”

“Yes!” Sheng Ning had already prepared herself mentally, having exposed Zhao Feifei’s identity; she knew the Inspection Department’s investigation would inevitably reach her.

These past three days, she had been waiting for the investigators to find her and had been constantly contemplating in her mind a mysterious reason to explain how she had come to know the secret.

It was not enough to just clarify the explanation; she also had to account for why she didn’t report it sooner.

That was indeed a headache-inducing problem.

“Sheng Ning!” Wu Youli’s face turned pale as she looked at her. The two were close, and Wu Youli’s eyes were clearly filled with worry.

“It’s okay, don’t worry!” Sheng Ning smiled, then followed the person who had called her away.

Seeing the situation, Dai Bin guessed that no one was in the mood for training anymore, especially since Captain Yang had already ordered to halt the training. He had no choice but to dismiss everyone and explain which areas of the troupe base they could go to and which were off-limits.

The areas where the female comrades could move around were quite simple: they were not allowed out, so it was just the cafeteria, training ground, dormitories, and washrooms.

Wu Youli walked with Chen Huaying, asking her, “Chen Huaying, do you think Sheng Ning could be implicated after helping out?”

“She’ll be fine. By revealing the truth, she did a service. You should worry about yourself more! We were all at the scene, so they will definitely call us in for a talk soon.” Chen Huaying, true to her upbringing from a big courtyard, was well-versed in such procedures.

Before the two could reach the dormitories, the inspecting officers approached them.

“Wu Youli, Chen Huaying? We are from the Inspection Department. Please come with us.”

“Yes!”

Upon leaving the dormitory courtyard, they realized that half of the General Union Song and Dance Troupe had already been called in for a talk.

General Union Inspection Department Interrogation Room

Sheng Ning gazed at the familiar table and chairs, unable to resist a slight smile.

The interrogation officer on the other side was a different person, a woman with a sharp air about her who asked Sheng Ning many pointed questions. All of which Sheng Ning skillfully deflected one by one.

“I’m very curious, how did you come to know this secret? According to our investigation, your hometown and Zhao Feifei’s are in completely different directions.”

Sheng Ning bit her lip, explaining, “I shared a dormitory with her, and once, inadvertently, I heard her talking in her sleep, so I remembered it.”

“Why didn’t you report it sooner?”
