She Lives without Regret in This Life

Chapter 74: Chapter 074 Deep Fried Small Fruits

“Okay!” Sheng Ning sincerely thanked her.

Boiled water over steamed buns, something she hadn’t eaten for many years, yet she didn’t disdain it at all. She chewed slowly and finished two buns before finally feeling less hungry.

Wu Youli watched her eat the soaked buns with such earnestness that she suddenly felt a twinge of heartache.

“Are you still hungry? I also have deep-fried sweet treats,” Wu Youli rummaged in her cupboard and took out a very tightly wrapped greaseproof paper package. She opened it to find sugar-frosted treats, golden and crispy, which made one’s mouth water at the sight.

This was a specialty from her hometown. Families would only indulge in making and tasting these during the New Year’s festivities. They were made from dough that was rolled into long strips, deep-fried in hot oil, and then coated with sugar. They tasted flaky, delectable, and were very filling.

Such preparation was extravagant with oil and sugar. In the poor countryside, it was a considerable luxury.

...

Sheng Ning’s gaze moved away from the treats with difficulty, and then she firmly shook her head. “I’m full…”

Before she could finish, Zhao Feifei entered from outside and immediately snatched the package from Wu Youli’s hands.

“You Li, I knew you cared about me the most.” Zhao Feifei gleamed at the sight of the treats, grabbing one and stuffing it into her mouth, savoring it deliciously.

The eyes of the three people in the room instantly revealed a sense of unease at Zhao Feifei’s actions. Wu Youli looked at her own empty hands and, with her inherently kind nature, apologetically said to Sheng Ning, “I’m sorry!”

“Why are you apologizing to her?” Zhao Feifei snapped back, displeased, while continuously enjoying the treats without offering any to others.

Wu Youli didn’t respond but just sighed helplessly. She knew Zhao Feifei’s character well. If she were to say that the treats were originally for Sheng Ning, it would definitely lead to a big fuss that lasted until midnight.

Seeing Wu Youli’s silence only emboldened Zhao Feifei to prattle on, “Let me tell you, You Li, you should keep your distance from sketchy people like her. Otherwise, you might end up getting sold by her and even help count the cash!”

Sheng Ning’s eyebrows furrowed tightly at these words. If anyone was to be called sketchy, Zhao Feifei of the entire Song and Dance Troupe was second to none.

Hadn’t Wu Youli suffered such a fate in her past life due to her poor choice of friends, thanks to Zhao Feifei?

“Give it back,” Sheng Ning stood up, her gaze icy. Her delicate beauty, like a rose, took on a more majestic and inviolable air due to her rare display of sternness.

The three people in the room looked at her in surprise, and Zhao Feifei’s hand holding the treats involuntarily trembled under Sheng Ning’s intense gaze.

“What… what are you staring at? Stop staring or I’ll gouge your eyes out!” Zhao Feifei spat angrily, with hollow bravado.

“Feifei, just be quiet,” Wu Youli rebuked sternly.

Zhang Hongmei also whispered, “Zhao Feifei, those treats belong to Wu Youli; how can you just take them?”

“Am I stealing?” Zhao Feifei held the treats proudly with her chin high, “I have a good relationship with You Li, what’s it to you?”

Sheng Ning said nothing, she just glanced at Wu Youli silently and then carried her basin away to wash up.

If Wu Youli, the host, wasn’t going to speak up, why should she interfere?

With Wu Youli’s soft-heartedness, now unable to refuse Zhao Feifei, she would have to deal with the consequences later on. Even if Sheng Ning wanted to help, the other party had to be willing to accept it.

Wu Youli was clearly aware of the message behind Sheng Ning’s eyes, but she just couldn’t bring herself to be harsh. In fact, she had treasured those treats so much that she hadn’t even allowed herself to enjoy them, and it grieved her to see Feifei take them.

But still…
