She Lives without Regret in This Life

Chapter 39: Chapter 039 Making Soybean Sprouts

Lately, everyone had been discussing this matter, yet no one paid attention to the rumors about Sheng Ning.

Staying at home every day, Sheng Ning was not idle either. She accidentally discovered that there were quite a few soybeans left in the house, so she took to making her own soybean sprouts when she had nothing else to do.

In these times, having a skill was a matter of great prestige. Because of the lack of information and generally low levels of education, people in rural areas had no choice but to farm.

Learning a skill was almost impossible.

Making soybean sprouts in the future would be easy; one could simply look up a tutorial online. But back then, there weren’t many who knew how to do it.

No one in Shixi Town, where Sheng Ning’s house was located, knew how to make them. If one wanted to eat soybean sprouts, they had to wait for a large market day, when people from other places would come to sell them.

Usually, one could only buy them in the county town.

Sheng Ning was quite skilled at making soybean sprouts. As long as she managed the water temperature and timing well, the soybean sprouts that grew out looked particularly fresh and delicious.

The cost was low and the price was affordable, adding a delicious dish to the dinner table was one of the happiest things.

Sheng An, who had been ignoring her, couldn’t help but come over to her side when he saw the soybean sprouts she made.

“Sheng Ning, what if we make more and sell them in the town?” Sheng An’s mind worked quickly, his black and bright eyes rolling.

Sheng Ning looked at her incredulously, “Bean sprouts are cheap and don’t need weighing, 2 cents per pound can buy a lot. Indeed, there’s a market for them.”

“Right! I told you!” Sheng An excitedly rubbed his hands together.

“Why don’t we try it? Next month it’s our turn to provide grains to grandfather’s family, and if we have nothing to offer, the first and second aunts will surely curse at father.”

Sheng Laosan was the third eldest among the brothers, with two very mean sisters-in-law. The elderly in the family lived alone, but the three brothers took turns providing them with food. Each family contributed for four months, which could be in the form of grain or money, and soon it was their turn.

If they couldn’t provide, they wouldn’t be able to celebrate the New Year.

Thinking of the grandfather and grandmother living at the eastern end of the village, Sheng Ning’s heart suddenly felt blocked. As a child, her family had no boys, and her grandmother always cursed her as bringing bad luck, a calamity that would lead to the end of their family line. Later, when An’an died tragically, it was also her grandmother along with the first and second aunts who blocked the door, forcefully refusing to let the body enter.

Therefore, Sheng Ning truly had no affection for this grandmother.

“What’s wrong with you?” Sheng An was frightened by the gloomy expression on her face.

“It’s nothing.” Sheng Ning took a deep breath, repeatedly admonishing herself in her heart. ‘Stay calm. You must stay calm. She is your grandmother, your relative. You swore to be a filial daughter in this life, so you absolutely cannot be an unfilial granddaughter.’

Sheng An stared at her suspiciously, her doubts growing. Sheng Ning had changed so drastically in just less than six months after joining the General Union, she seemed like a completely different person.

If it weren’t for some of her familiar habits, Sheng An would almost doubt if someone was impersonating her.

“Do you want to do it?” Seeing her lost in thought, Sheng An asked impatiently, “If you don’t want to do it, forget it. I knew how lazy you were. Humph!”

“I don’t have time to do it, but I can teach you.” She still had one week left before returning to the General Union, and before going back, she also needed to help An’an cancel the marriage arrangements with the town mayor’s family.

There simply wasn’t enough time.

“What did you say, you’d teach me? You are willing to teach me?” Sheng An pointed at herself incredulously, and confirmed again, “You’re not joking, right?”
