She Lives without Regret in This Life

Chapter 33: Chapter 33 Lifting the Small Stool

Having resolved the issue, Sheng Ning hurriedly walked towards the village chief’s house. As soon as she entered, she heard the sound of a man and a woman arguing, things being thrown around, and even the crying of children.

Gou Dan was also standing outside the yard of the village chief’s house, sneaking peeks inside. Seeing Sheng Ning walking over, he hopped and ran towards her.

“Pretty sister, are you here too?” His voice was sniffly, which gave Sheng Ning the urge to wipe his runny nose.

“Yes! What’s going on inside?” Sheng Ning crouched down to make her eye level with Gou Dan.

“They are fighting!” Gou Dan’s mood was downcast, “Just now my mom was arguing with my dad at home, too. They said it’s all because of Mrs. Zhang, that troublemaker.”

“Your dad is the Village Chief?” Sheng Ning asked, surprised.

“Yes, yes! Isn’t he awesome?” Gou Dan immediately puffed up with pride.

Sheng Ning couldn’t help the twitching of her mouth, feeling a bit uneasy inside. She wished she hadn’t been so forthright in the car, spilling everything.

“Awesome.” She gave a thumbs-up, bringing a wide grin to Gou Dan’s face.

Suddenly, Sheng Ning felt a whoosh by her ear. She quickly turned sideways with Gou Dan, and a chopping board flew past right before her eyes.

Looking at the thick chopping board, Sheng Ning felt a rush of fear.

Gou Dan, oblivious to what had just happened, excitedly clapped his hands, “They’re fighting, they’re fighting.”

He then ran straight inside.

Sheng An’s voice also came from inside, “Stop fighting, stop fighting. What if Xiao Hong gets frightened?”

Hearing her voice, Sheng Ning also hurried in.

As she entered the yard, she found it truly worthy of the village chief’s house. It seemed unassuming from the outside, but inside it was spacious. At the moment, quite a few people stood in the yard, all watching the couple tangled in a fight, with no one intending to intervene.

Sheng An was holding a seven- or eight-year-old girl, trying to break up the fight, yet afraid the child would get caught in the fray. She was so anxious that her face had turned pale.

“Stop fighting, stop it. Someone is going to get killed.”

Qi Mei, who was already not tall, was now thrown to the ground by a much taller and bulkier man, who was punching and kicking her.

“I told you to stop causing trouble, I told you to go ahead and die.” The man kicked Qi Mei in the stomach, instantly causing her back to arch in pain, and her body to curl up.

“Get up! You like to make a fuss, right? Well, let’s have a real fuss this time. I’ve had enough of you, you crazy woman. We’re getting a divorce tomorrow.” The man was infuriated, and thinking about all the onlookers, he struck even harder.

He was the village chief, the boss of the village. If he wanted to sleep with that widow, it would just take a word. Now, with this crazy woman making a scene, his days as village chief were surely numbered.

If he was going to have a hard time, he would not let her off either.

Qi Mei lay on the ground in pain, her face ashen like gold leaf, with a trickle of blood seeping from the corner of her mouth, motionless.

Without thinking, Sheng Ning picked up a small stool from the yard and aimed a fierce blow at the back of the man’s neck.

She had aimed precisely, having learned from her experiences in prison. That spot could knock someone out without killing them.

The stool struck, and the man wobbled but turned around with a furious punch, swinging it towards Sheng Ning’s face.

That was it. She was about to get her head split open.

In an instant, this thought flashed through Sheng Ning’s mind. She had calculated everything except that her own strength was too little.

Just as she braced herself with closed eyes for the punch, she didn’t feel the expected pain. Instead, she heard the sound of a heavy fall.

Surprised, she opened her eyes to find Sheng An, dropping the stool she held in a panic.
