The Darkness System: Rise of the Broken Sovereign

In the soul well, the misty purple vapor swirled around Kael as he settled into his meditation position. His soul sense expanded idly — twenty-eight meters now, pushing toward the limit of the Peak Stage. The Soul Vein Crystal Goran had given him pulsed faintly beside him, amplifying the ambient soul force.

A system notification flashed before his eyes.

Kael allowed himself a small nod of satisfaction. Thirty thousand credits was a significant boost. Combined with his remaining balance, he now had enough to consider the more expensive techniques he’d been eyeing.

He immediately pulled up the System shop.

The techniques settled into his consciousness. Soul Barrage felt like twelve separate channels opening in his mind, each one primed to fire a concentrated spike of soul force. Soul Severing Blade was heavier — a dense, concentrated application of soul power that could channel through a weapon and bypass every physical defense.

Kael spent the next several hours learning both techniques. Soul Barrage required multitasking — maintaining twelve separate soul force streams while directing them at different targets. It was mentally exhausting at first, but his soul structure adapted quickly.

Soul Severing Blade was simpler in concept but harder in execution. The soul force had to be compressed to an extreme density before channeling it into a weapon. Too loose and the effect dissipated on contact. Too tight and it backfired, damaging his own soul pathways.

By the time he emerged from the soul well, he had a functional grasp of both.

**************

A Month and One Week Later,

Kael had now spent two months in the tribe’s territory.

He had broken through to Mana Heart Rank 3 a week ago. The mana density of Vael-Khazul, combined with the transcendent core’s ability to absorb insane amount of mana and with the Void Sovereign Mantra that filter mana and drew mana more into his core, he had accelerated the process beyond normal expectations. He was now at the final stage of the Early Mana Heart realm — one breakthrough away from the Mid Stage.

His soul cultivation had progressed even further. Two days ago, he had reached the Peak Stage of the Soul Awakening realm. Continuous baths in the soul well, supplemented by the Soul Vein Crystal, had pushed his soul force density to its limit for this stage. All that remained was forming his soul core — the transition from Soul Awakening to Soul Core. It was said to be an even more painful process than the initial awakening itself.

Kael decided it was time to leave.

He had gathered enough intelligence. The barrier mechanics. The inheritance ground timeline. The tribe’s internal politics. The Patriarch’s killing of the emissaries. The Draven family’s likely response. It was more than enough for a full report.

He packed and moved through the forest toward the territory boundary. The Mask of a Thousand Faces went into his System storage. He could now resume his true form once outside.

The boundary was close. He could sense it ahead now unlike before he enter. When he didn’t have access to soul sense. It felt like a faint shimmer in the air, like heat rising from sun-baked stone. Another hundred meters and he would be free.

Then the sky turned dark.

Kael stopped. His head snapped upward.

A massive spaceship descended through the canopy, its shadow swallowing the bioluminescent glow of the forest. The trees groaned under the displacement pressure as the vessel positioned itself directly above the territory boundary. It was military-grade — black hull, red insignia, weapon emplacements along its underside.

The ship’s belly opened.

Figures dropped out like a swarm of locusts. Hundreds of them — Mana Heart to Late Spirit Soul realm cultivators, their auras blazing as they descended. They landed in a loose perimeter around the territory boundary, their boots shaking the ground on impact.

THUD. THUD. THUD. THUD.

Kael immediately recognized the red hair. The crimson manes. The aggressive postures.

The Draven family.

A family equal in power to the Vorns.

Kael’s expression turned grave. Just my luck.

He immediately reached into his System storage and pulled out a talisman — a single-use communication item. He crushed it in his palm.

CRACK.

Blue light flared and died. The message was sent.

Kael thought grimly, the guys above the Early Spirit Soul realm can probably not get through the barrier. That’s why they’re all below that threshold. But if they have a way to bring it down—

In front of the Gra-Khazul territory, at the same time, one of the soldiers approached a red-haired man who looked to be in his late twenties. The main line of the Draven family was denoted by their red hair — a trait that ran pure through their bloodline.

”My Lord,” the soldier said, bowing slightly. ”Shall we attack now? Your father isn’t aware of this.”

The red-haired man’s expression turned angry. His amber eyes flashed with killing intent.

”You dare question me?”

The soldier dropped to one knee immediately, head bowed. ”No, my Lord.”

”Then get to work.”

Another soldier stepped forward carrying a small device — a metallic sphere covered in glowing glyphs. He reached the invisible boundary and pressed the device against it. The barrier shimmered, becoming faintly visible for the first time — a massive dome of ancient energy stretching across the entire territory.

”My Lord,” the soldier reported, ”this boundary disruptor will only last twenty minutes. So we have to be fast.”

The red-haired man stared at the flickering dome with cold satisfaction.

”Alright. Do it.”

The soldier tapped the device.

HUMMMMMMM.

A deep, resonant sound echoed across the forest as the barrier became fully visible. Cracks spread across its surface like fractures in ice. The ancient energy flickered, weakened, strained.

Then sections of the barrier began to drop.

The red-haired man drew his sword — a soul-crafted weapon that hummed with condensed power that he personally had a forgemaster crafted for this mission. He raised it above his head and his voice thundered across the forest.

”Attack!”

He pointed his blade at the territory. ”Some of you should surround the perimeter. Nobody leaves alive. It’s time to claim this tribe’s territory once and for all.”

Soldiers scattered in every direction, their battle cries echoing through the trees.

Deep in the forest, Kael watched the barrier come down section by section. The ancient energy that had protected this land for millennia was crumbling.

His jaw tightened.

”Yeah,” he murmured with a grim expression. ”I think I jinxed it.”
