The Darkness System: Rise of the Broken Sovereign

The surface-level shacks were the worst.

Kael walked through them with Aria and Bruski behind him, examining the conditions. The ”workers” were not workers. They were slaves. Chained at the ankles. Fed just enough to keep them alive to work. The mortality rate in these shacks was measured in weeks.

Seventy-three people in the first shack. Forty-one in the second. One hundred and nine total across the surface level facilities.

Kael gathered them in the main courtyard outside the mine entrance. They stood before him with hollow, defeated expressions. Their chains clinked as they shifted weight, the sound echoing across the courtyard like a funeral dirge.

Kael drew his blade.

”I’m Kael Cassian Vorn. The new Lord of Ashfall.”

”All contracts, debts, and illegal claims of ownership made by the previous administration are null and void. Effective immediately.”

He walked to the first line of slaves and began severing chains. The blade cut through rusted iron links like they were paper. Links clattered to the stone. The former slaves stared at their freed wrists with expressions of disbelief.

”I’m offering you a choice.”

Kael moved to the second line. More chains severed.

”Leave Ashfall with nothing but your lives. No resources. No protection. No guarantee the people who enslaved you won’t come looking for revenge.”

”Or sign a paid, voluntary contract with me. Real wages — a fraction of the mine’s output. Housing in the newly commandeered gang barracks. Safety equipment. No one enters the dangerous deep tunnels unless they volunteer for hazard-pay work.”

”Choose.”

Silence.

Then a voice from the back of the crowd — an old man with a scarred face and hollow eyes — spoke. ”I choose the contract.”

A woman near the front wept openly. ”Contract. Please. Anything is better than this.”

”Contract.”

”Contract.”

”Contract.”

”Contract. Contract. Contract.”

The word spread through the crowd like a contagion. One hundred and nine voices speaking it simultaneously. Some were crying. Some were shaking. All of them signed.

The contracts materialized in the air before each signer, glowing with binding magic.

”Bruski.” Kael turned to his hound. ”Take them to the barracks. Feed them. House them. Get them uniformed. They work for me now.”

Bruski nodded and began herding the former slaves toward the commandeered gang headquarters.

The deep shafts were the problem.

Kael stood at the entrance to the mine’s main ventilation system, studying the schematics Gerard had acquired from the previous administration’s records. The mine was a labyrinth of horizontal shafts, vertical drops, and connecting tunnels that descended kilometers into the planet’s crust. Most of the active mining happened in the upper levels. The lower levels were either abandoned or controlled by the remaining gangs who hadn’t heard about the coup above yet.

”The lower levels still have active gang territories,” Kael said. ”We smoke them out.”

”Smoke them out, my lord?” Bruski asked.

”Seal the main ventilation shafts. Pile wet wood and sulfur at the entrances. Light fires. The smoke will be dense enough to choke anyone inside the lower levels. They’ll have to use the emergency exits.”

Bruski’s one-armed grip tightened on his new position. ”The emergency exits?”

”Guarded. You and the new miners handle them. Cut down anyone who comes out. Chain the leaders for me.”

”How many exits?”

”Seven. All active. All guarded.”

Bruski’s smiled eagerly. ”Consider it done.”

Three hours later, the lower levels of the mine were death traps.

Dense, choking smoke filled every tunnel. Gang members stumbled toward the emergency exits, coughing, eyes streaming tears, desperation overriding caution.

They emerged into daylight to find Bruski waiting.

The one-armed hound had positioned his most loyal enforcers at each exit. No one escaped.

The leaders — six gang bosses who had controlled the lower levels for years — were brought to Kael in chains.

Kael looked at them with the same clinical detachment he’d shown the slaves.

”Normally, I’d kill you.” The leaders flinched. ”But death is too easy. You’re going somewhere worse.”

He personally led them to the deepest, most dangerous section of the mine. The Pit.

The Pit was a flooded, gas-filled section that no one had entered in decades. The gas was odorless. Invisible. Instantly lethal. Anyone who breathed it died within seconds. The gang leaders had used it as a dumping ground for bodies.

”Go down.”

The leaders screamed, begged, tried to resist. Kael used shadow tendrils to force them down the shaft.

They descended into darkness. The gas hit them immediately. Their screams cut off after three seconds.

Kael descended behind them with Gerard, his Spirit Soul aura pushing back the gas through sheer pressure, consuming it like a fire consuming fog. But the poison was eating Gerard’s mana. Even Spirit Soul cultivators couldn’t survive prolonged exposure.

He reached into his storage and withdrew the pill Cassandra had given him before he left.

Poison Immunity Pill. King Grade.

Gerard’s eyes widened when Kael swallowed it. ”My lord—”

”The poison doesn’t affect me anymore.” Kael felt the pill take effect, neutralizing the gas in his lungs. ”But I can’t clear the entire Pit myself. The volume is too large.”

He turned to the walls of the Pit. Devouring darkness extended from his hands, spreading across the stone like black mold, consuming the poison gas molecule by molecule. The process was slow. The Pit was massive.

It took four hours.

When Kael emerged from the Pit, the gas was gone. The walls were clean. The water was drained. The bodies of the six gang leaders lay in the drained pit, suffocated before Kael could stop it. He hadn’t intended to kill them. The gas had said otherwise.

He stepped over the bodies.

The true discovery came when the gas cleared.

Beneath where the poison pocket had been, the walls changed color. The gray stone gave way to veins of something that shimmered with inner light. Not ore. Something more refined. Something that made his Spirit Eyes ache with recognition.

Starfall Iron. One of the rarest metals in the known universe. Capable of channeling and amplifying mana to extraordinary degrees. A single fist-sized piece could enhance a technique’s power by thirty percent. A sword forged from pure Starfall Iron could sell for more than most tier 2 weapons.

The vein was massive. Centuries of untouched wealth, hidden beneath a layer of lethal poison that had kept everyone away for generations.

He turned to Gerard. The Spirit Soul butler had followed him into the Pit, his mana reserves depleted by the constant gas protection, his face pale from the strain.

”Gather the mining crew.”

Kael pulled out a binding contract scroll. The terms were simple: absolute secrecy about what they see in the Pit, on penalty of death for them and their families. The contract would bind their tongues and their memories.

Gerard read it. His face went pale for a different reason.

Gerard blinked. ”All twelve of them? My lord, this level of secrecy—”

”Is necessary.”

Gerard swallowed. ”I’ll handle the contracts.”

He departed to find the twelve miners Kael had selected: trusted workers from the original slave pool who had shown competence and loyalty during the takeover.

They signed the contracts without reading the terms. Kael’s reputation after Red Night and the mine takeover was enough to ensure absolute obedience.

Two days later, the sealed section was complete.

A massive iron door — three meters thick, inscribed with Rank 5 locking runes — sealed the entrance to the Starfall Iron vein. The runes were designed to self-destruct if anyone except Kael tried to open them.

The official story to the rest of the city and the world was simple:

The mine was still producing low-grade mana stones. Business as usual. Nothing had changed.

Kael stood at the sealed door, watching his miners file out for surface duty, and smiled.

”Perfect.”

Lira appeared at the mine entrance, her expression tight with controlled urgency.

”My lord. The Pillar Knights have arrived.”

Kael turned from the iron door.

Pillar Knights. Here. Now.

”What squadron?”

”Fourth Squadron. Twelve pillar knights.”

Kael laughed.

”Show them in.”
