The Darkness System: Rise of the Broken Sovereign

The transfer gate deposited them in the Vorn Estate’s primary arrival chamber — a vaulted room of white marble and silver runes that connected to waypoints across the Thirteen Worlds.

Kael turned to Garrett. ”Report to whoever requires it. Don’t mention me directly. Let the results speak.”

Garrett nodded and departed toward the administrative wing.

Aria fell into step beside Kael. ”Where to first?”

”Cassandra.”

Margaret met them at the entrance, bowed once, and opened the door without a word.

Cassandra sat behind her desk, reviewing documents. She looked up as Kael entered, her cold eyes scanning him from head to toe, checking for injuries.

”You’re intact.”

”Disappointed?”

”Curious.” She set down her pen. ”Baron’s report arrived an hour ago. He was... effusive in his praise.”

Kael took the chair across from her. ”The mission went smoothly.”

”Seven Pillar Knights dead. Vasek’s syndicate dismantled. Thirty-seven high-value targets eliminated. Zero casualties on your side.” Cassandra’s voice was flat, but something beneath it warmed almost imperceptibly. ”Either you’re exceptionally lucky, exceptionally skilled, or exceptionally prepared.”

”Can’t it be all three?”

”It can be.” She leaned back. ”Marcus and Ursula are furious. The Pillar Knights were Marcus’s personal assets. Losing seven without a single trace of evidence has humiliated him publicly. He’s demanding an investigation.”

”Let him investigate. The shadow guild left nothing to find.”

”I know. He won’t find anything.” Cassandra’s lips curved slightly. ”Which is its own form of punishment. A mystery with no solution is worse than a solved crime when you’re the one who wanted the culprit punished.”

”Grayson?”

”Will handle the formal promotion. Father is absent — attending to matters elsewhere. Grayson has been acting as proxy for family decisions in his absence.”

”Then I should give him a show.”

Cassandra’s smile widened. ”That’s my brother.”

They talked for a while before he left.

When Kael walked back through the massive gates of the Vorn Estate, the atmosphere was thick with shock.

Word had spread. The minor branch family members who filled the estate’s lower ranks knew. By the time Kael reached the central administrative complex.

Marcus and Ursula’s faction — along with the corrupt elders who supported their political interests — had fully expected Kael to return in a coffin. Or empty-handed. A cautionary tale about what happened to children who got too big for their station.

The reality was something else entirely.

Kael marched through the estate corridors with a calm, unbothered expression. He did not look like a twenty-year-old Sleeper who had survived a lawless zone by luck or the skin of his teeth. He looked like a seasoned warrior of the Vorn family who had just returned from a routine patrol.

Garrett fell into step behind him at the administrative complex entrance. Aria waited behind.

The central audience chamber was packed.

Grayson Vorn — the Family Head’s older brother, the assistant family head — sat at the elevated dais where the Family Head’s throne usually stood empty. His expression was diplomatic neutrality, but his eyes tracked Kael with sharp interest.

Around him sat a collection of the Family Head’s wives, children, and elders. Ursula sat rigid-backed in her chair, her frozen iron eyes fixed forward, refusing to acknowledge Kael’s existence. Marcus stood behind her, jaw clenched. Thalia sat beside her mother with her characteristic cold calculation.

A dozen elders filled the lower seats — old men and women whose power derived from family politics, resource control, and generations of accumulated favors. Several of them wore expressions of poorly concealed anticipation.

Kael walked to the center of the chamber.

He stopped in front of the dais and upended his storage ring.

Physical tokens hit the marble floor. High-level crests from eliminated bandit lords and syndicate lieutenants clattered together. And heads — seven of them, decapitated, preserved by shadow techniques, arranged in a neat row — rolled across the stone until they stopped at Grayson’s feet.

The sheer volume of high-ranking outlaws killed in a single five-day period didn’t just fulfill the mission requirements. It completely shattered the historical merit records for intermediate Sleepers. No Sleeper in Vorn family history had eliminated this many Mana Heart-ranked targets in a single mission. Afterall, this targets were above Kael both in experience and cultivation. The numbers matched those of veteran Shadows.

Silence.

Grayson looked down at the heads, then up at Kael. His expression didn’t change.

”Elders,” Grayson said. His voice carried the weight of a man who had managed the Vorn family’s affairs for four centuries. ”Review the submitted report and confirm mission completion.”

One of the older elders — a man with a gray beard and conflicted eyes — stood slowly. He unrolled the scroll that had been prepared in advance and read the contents aloud.

”Mission: Zenthoria Bandit Suppression. Assigned to: Kael Cassian Vorn, Sleeper Rank 1. Support: Garrett De Vorn, Shadow Rank 5.”

He paused, checking the next section.

”Targets eliminated: 37 individual high-value criminals. Two organized syndicate structures dismantled. Primary syndicate leader eliminated. Supporting documentation: Physical crests, identification tokens, and seven decapitated heads submitted as proof of kill.”

The elder’s voice grew quieter as he continued reading.

”Mission status: Complete. Exceeded.”

He rolled the scroll shut.

”By the authority granted to me as acting head in the Family Head’s absence, I confirm mission completion and recommend rank advancement.”

Ursula’s knuckles were white on the armrests. Marcus was burning with rage inside.

”Kael Cassian Vorn,” Grayson said formally. ”You are hereby promoted from Sleeper Rank 1 to Shadow Rank 14. Effective immediately.”

Murmurs rippled through the chamber. Shadow Rank 14 was the lowest possible Shadow rank, but it was still a Shadow rank. Sleepers who reached it before age twenty-five were rare. Sleepers who reached it at twenty were unprecedented and to them, Kael was the first to do this which meant his potential was immense.

Ursula’s composure cracked.

”As is tradition for newly promoted Shadows,” Grayson continued, ”you are assigned a governance city. Five options are available.”

He gestured, and a magical projection appeared in the chamber — a map of the Vorn central continent with five locations marked in red.

”Ironhaven City. Coastal trade hub.”

”Dustwind City. Desert border fortress.”

”Blackridge Mines. Mountain territory.”

”Hollow Depths. Underground cavern network.”

”Ashfall Town. Also known as Ashfall City.”

Grayson’s voice carried a faint note of something that might have been amusement. ”Choose.”

The chamber watched. Most expected Kael to select Ironhaven or Dustwind — the safe choices, the valuable choices, the ones that any rational newly-promoted Shadow would pick.

Kael studied the map for a long moment. His eyes lingered on Ashfall Town.

”I’ll take Ashfall.”

Dead silence.

Then the murmurs started.

”Ashfall? That’s a graveyard—”

”The mine hasn’t turned a profit in decades—”

”He’s throwing his career away—”

”Why would anyone choose—”

Grayson raised a hand. The murmurs died.

”Ashfall Town is assigned to Shadow Kael Cassian Vorn.” His tone brooked no argument. ”The paperwork will be processed by end of day. Transfer gates are available for immediate relocation.”

Kael bowed — shallow, perfunctory, exactly as much respect as the situation warranted and not a fraction more — and turned to leave.

As he passed Ursula’s section of the seating, he let his gaze drift toward her for just a moment. Their eyes met.

Ursula’s expression could have frozen fire.

Kael smiled and continued walking without a word.

Behind him, Garrett received his own announcement: increased squad size, raise in monthly stipend, and access to the revenue streams of the small city he already governed as a Shadow. The Old Wolf accepted with characteristic stoicism.
