The Darkness System: Rise of the Broken Sovereign

Kael circulated his mana into the crystal.

The effect was immediate. The Soul Vein Crystal hummed beneath his palms, and the purple glow intensified, pulsing faster, matching the rhythm of his heartbeat. Mana flowed out of him in a controlled stream — not the violent flood of combat, but a measured, deliberate current guided by the Breath of the Deep Green technique.

The mana traveled up his arms, through his shoulders, into his neck, and then into the specialized meridian loop in his brain. The technique’s pathway was precise — a closed circuit that threaded through the frontal lobe, looping back on itself in a pattern that felt unnatural, like writing with the wrong hand.

The crystal absorbed the mana. For a moment, nothing happened.

Then it fed something back.

Kael’s entire body locked up.

It wasn’t mana. It was something else — something finer, sharper, more fundamental. It entered his meridians like liquid fire, but the fire wasn’t burning his body. It was burning something deeper. Something behind his thoughts. Behind his sense of self.

Goran had said it was like setting fire to his meridians from the inside.

He wasn’t wrong.

The sensation was intense — a deep, throbbing ache that radiated from the center of his skull outward through every nerve in his body. Kael’s jaw clenched. His fingers dug into the crystal hard enough to leave marks in the stone pedestal.

But it wasn’t unbearable.

Kael had expected agony. He had prepared himself for screaming, for the kind of pain that broke lesser cultivators. Instead, what he felt was... manageable. Uncomfortable, yes. Deeply unpleasant, certainly. But compared to what his soul had already endured — the fracturing between lives, the System’s parasitic attachment, the raw wound of incomplete existence — this was almost tame.

His soul integrity. That had to be it. His soul structure was already damaged, already rebuilt from fragments. Pain that would devastate a healthy soul was merely uncomfortable for one that had learned to function while broken.

He pushed more mana into the crystal.

The soul force returned in greater quantities, cycling through the brain loop, each pass refining it further, making it denser, more coherent. Kael could feel it accumulating — not in his dantian, not in his meridians, but in his consciousness itself. A new reservoir forming in a place he had never consciously accessed before.

One hour passed.

The pain shifted. No longer a raw burn, it became a pressure — like something expanding inside a space too small to contain it. Kael gritted his teeth and continued cycling.

Two hours in, something clicked.

Like a soft, almost imperceptible shift in his perception, like a door opening a crack in a dark room.

But through that crack, Kael sensed everything.

The root walls of the chamber. The pulsing crystal beneath his hands. The faint movements of insects in the moss outside. The heartbeat of a guard walking past the tunnel entrance forty meters above. The breathing of two clan members having a conversation in a home sixty meters away.

His soul sense stretched outward like an invisible hand, and the range kept growing. Five meters. Eight. Twelve. Fifteen.

Fifteen meters. Three times the normal range for a newly awakened soul cultivator.

Kael opened his eyes.

The chamber looked the same, but it also looked different. He could perceive the walls not just visually but as presences — solid, dense, almost alive in a way he couldn’t describe. The crystal pulsed with soul force that he could now see as a faint purple haze, separate from its physical glow.

This is soul sense.

The reason for his unusual range became clear almost immediately. Normal soul cultivators had complete soul structures — intact, whole, unbroken. Their soul force distributed evenly across a full framework. Kael’s soul was different. It had been shattered and reassembled, missing pieces filled in with foreign matter — the System, the self fragment, whatever else lurked in the depths of his consciousness.

Soul integrity was not the same as soul damage. Soul damage was a crack, an injury — like a broken bone. It could be healed with meditation, rest, or soul healing pills. Soul integrity was something else entirely. It was like having limbs missing from your soul. Parts of the fundamental structure simply gone, leaving gaps that nothing could fill.

Over time, through combat, through growth, through sheer force of will, Kael’s soul structure had slowly recovered to eighty-nine percent. But that eleven percent of missing structure meant his soul force had less framework to distribute across. It concentrated. Densified. Like pouring water into a smaller container, the pressure increased.

More power per cubic unit of soul. Greater range. Greater intensity.

A flaw that had become an advantage.

Host soul integrity has reached 90%

Kael blinked. Ninety percent. The soul awakening process itself had pushed his soul integrity up by one percent. The structured cycling of soul force through the brain loop had apparently stimulated some degree of natural repair.

Then the dizziness hit.

His vision blurred. The chamber swam.

Kael tried to stand and collapsed. His body hit the stone floor, and the world went black.

He was floating.

Floating in a space that had no up, no down, no dimensions he could understand. The darkness around him was absolute — not the absence of light, but the absence of everything. No air. No temperature. No sound.

Kael looked down at himself.

His body was translucent. Faintly glowing. Not solid.

Astral projection.

His consciousness had been pulled out of his physical body and deposited somewhere else entirely. The System was silent — no notifications, no commentary, no snide remarks. Just empty, pressing darkness.

Then the space changed.

A wave of power washed over the void — so immense that Kael’s astral form shuddered like a leaf in a hurricane.

Two figures materialized in the distance.

Kael’s astral eyes locked onto them immediately.

One was white-haired. Tall. Clad in fine black battle armor that seemed to absorb the light around it, a black sword in his hand. His features were sharp, aristocratic, and achingly familiar.

Damian Astraeon.

The other figure was massive. Four arms. Two curved horns jutting from a brow ridge of dark gray skin. A physique that looked carved from stone, muscles upon muscles, each one dense with condensed power. Its eyes burned with crimson light.

An Asura Demon.

They clashed.

The impact of their first exchange sent a shockwave rippling through the empty space, distorting reality itself. Kael watched from his floating position, unable to move, unable to look away.

Damian moved like liquid death. His black sword traced arcs that left visible tears in the fabric of space — not cuts in the air, but wounds in reality itself. Each swing carried enough power to level a mountain, yet Damian wielded it with the casual precision of a master painter wielding a brush.

The Asura Demon was no less terrifying. Its four arms moved independently — two fists striking, two hands forming signs that summoned waves of dark energy. It matched Damian blow for blow, its regeneration closing wounds as fast as the sword created them.

They tore across the void, their battle so fast that Kael could only track the aftermath — shattered space, residual energy dissipating like dying stars, shockwaves that made his astral form vibrate with each passing second.

Then Damian feinted low.

The Asura raised all four arms to block the anticipated upper cut. But the black sword swept horizontally instead — a dark slash that caught the demon at the elbow joint of its leading arm.

SWISH.

The arm separated.

Black blood sprayed into the void. The severed limb tumbled away, fingers still twitching, dissolving into particles of dark energy.

Kael watched the dark slash fade from existence, the residual spatial distortion slowly healing.

This power level is insane, he thought. My Dark Slash mastery is so mediocre before that.
