The Darkness System: Rise of the Broken Sovereign

They collided like thunder meeting earth.

Cassandra’s axe cleaved downward with gravity reinforcement — the blade carrying weight that shouldn’t have been possible at Mana Heart suppression. Kael caught it on both Void Edge blades, the impact sending cracks spiderwebbing across the floor beneath his feet. Lightning arced off his body and seared into her axe, but she absorbed it without flinching.

He twisted, broke the lock, and counter-attacked with a gravity-enhanced slash. Cassandra deflected with the axe handle and drove her knee toward his ribs. Kael shadow-stepped backward, but her kick followed — gravity tethering her movement to his position.

She’s using gravity to track me.

He fired three Lightning Fangs in quick succession. Cassandra swatted the first aside with her axe, ducked the second, and let the third detonate against a gravity barrier she’d raised in a fraction of a second.

Kael pressed his advantage. Lightning Body kept his speed at the edge of perception. Thunder God’s first form let him process Cassandra’s movements before they completed. He saw her axe beginning a horizontal sweep and had already calculated the dodge before her muscles started moving.

But she adjusted.

Mid-swing, Cassandra altered the trajectory by five degrees — a tiny correction that most cultivators couldn’t have made, but it was enough to catch him on the shoulder as he dodged. The axe blade bit through Shadow Armor and drew a thin line of blood.

Kael hissed and retreated, drawing runes in the air with his left hand while his right maintained a defensive guard.

Rank 4 Lightning Runes — three of them, arranged in a triadic pattern. They flared simultaneously, firing concentrated bolts of electricity at Cassandra from three different angles.

She didn’t dodge.

The lightning entered her gravitational field and dispersed.

”Gravity can redirect energy,” Cassandra said calmly. ”Surely you knew that.”

Kael spat blood and wiped his mouth. ”Knew it. Thought I was faster than your reaction time.”

”You are. My field is passive. It doesn’t require reaction.”

So annoying.

He switched tactics. Rank 4 Devouring Darkness runes materialized in the air around him. As Cassandra advanced, Kael let her close the distance before triggering them.

Corrosive darkness erupted from four points simultaneously, converging on her position. Cassandra’s gravity field slowed the darkness but couldn’t redirect it entirely — Devouring Darkness wasn’t pure energy. It was substance. It consumed what it touched.

For the first time, Cassandra moved backward.

Kael pressed the attack, infusing his blade strikes with Devouring Darkness. Each slash that came close to Cassandra drained a wisp of her mana.

Then her boot caught him in the chest.

CRACK.

Kael flew backward, the air leaving his lungs in a violent exhale. He crashed through a weapon rack and hit the far wall hard enough to dent the reinforced metal.

He coughed blood, pushed himself upright, and fired six Lightning Fangs on instinct.

They entered her gravity field and dispersed like the others.

Think. Think.

He’d been fighting wrong. Using lightning against a gravity manipulator who could scatter energy fields was wasteful. Using darkness was better but still inefficient against someone with decades more experience.

Something clicked.

Cassandra’s axe was massive. Yet she swung it faster than most cultivators could swing a dagger. Her arms weren’t straining. Her shoulders weren’t compensating.

She was applying gravity to the axe itself. Making it weightless in her hands while retaining its mass for impact. Zero resistance during the swing. Full force on contact.

Of course.

Kael applied the same principle to his blades. Gravity manipulation wrapped around both Void Edge weapons, stripping them of inertia. His next slash came so fast that even Cassandra’s enhanced perception registered surprise.

He did the same to his body. Combined with Lightning Body and Thunder God, his speed doubled.

Cassandra met his next exchange evenly for three strikes. On the fourth, Kael pushed her back. On the fifth, he drew blood from her forearm.

Her eyes lit up.

”Good. You learn fast.”

She shifted her grip on the axe. The casual dominance in her posture evaporated, replaced by something sharper. Focused. Her Domination Intent pressed against the air like a physical weight, and Kael felt it testing his Slaughter Intent even at a distance.

”Sovereign Axe Technique: Heaven’s Mandate. First Form — Heaven’s Descent.”

She swung once — a single, overhead strike that shouldn’t have been threatening. But gravity compressed around the axe blade, concentrating the force of an entire mountain into an edge no wider than a finger. A vertical line of distorted space screamed toward Kael, the air itself splitting apart along the axe’s path.

He crossed both blades at his wrists. Darkness and lightning spiraled around the Void Edge weapons as he activated Sky Rending Technique, Second Form: Shattered Moon.

One blade came down diagonally. The other swept up. They formed a perfect X-pattern in front of him, edges glowing with intertwined darkness and lightning. Geometric lines intersected at precise mathematical angles — a barrier not of force, but of interception. Anything that entered the X’s convergence point would be split, redirected, or shattered against itself.

Heaven’s Descent hit the center of the X.

BOOM.

The shockwave blew Kael backward twenty meters. His arms screamed. Shattered Moon held — barely — but the force leakage still sent cracks racing up both forearms. Blood ran from his wrists where the bones had fractured and healed in the same instant.

Cassandra hadn’t moved.

Kael gritted his teeth and formed a Pulsar orb in his right palm.

He fired it.

Cassandra raised her free hand and formed her own Pulsar.

The two orbs collided in the space between them. Gravity warped. The floor buckled. Rune arrays in the walls flickered and strained.

Both orbs detonated simultaneously. The explosion pushed Cassandra back three meters.

It pushed Kael back twelve meters backward.

He slid to a stop, breathing hard, blood dripping from his nose. The gap was absurd. Same technique. Same theoretical power. But her execution was miles beyond his. Where his Pulsar was a tool, hers was an extension of her will.

Cassandra flexed her wrist and smiled. ”I’m quite surprised. You’ve mastered the first three Chapters of the Gravitational Paradox.”

Kael said nothing.

”That technique was written by the First Ancestor. Most family members never progress past the second. Only Victor and I have reached the third Chapter.” Her smile widened. ”Oblivion.”

She rested her axe on her shoulder.

”Show me.”

Kael’s mind raced.

He raised both arms spread wide.

Gravity mana erupted from his body. A visible, swirling storm of distorted light that bent the air around him into prismatic waves.

From his left palm, a spiraling mass of absolute darkness took shape. Pulling everything toward its center with irresistible force.

Pulsar.

From his right palm, an expanding sphere of violent force bloomed. Pushing everything away with equal inevitability.

Quasar.

The two opposing forces warred against each other through his body. Pull and push. Attraction and repulsion.

Kael began the chant.

”Before the heavens opened, there was only the boundless void. Attraction binds the stars; repulsion drives the expanse. To force their union is to reverse creation itself. Let the gathering force swallow the scattering wind. Where the twin torrents meet, existence is denied.”

Cassandra’s eyes widened fractionally.

”Chanting,” she murmured. ”He knows about binding contracts.”

She was right. The Universal Contract mechanic — detailing a technique’s rules and limitations to boost its output through mana-reinforced truth — applied to chants as well. Verbalizing the incantation increased the technique’s potency by at least forty percent.

The two spheres drifted toward each other.

They merged.

What hung before Kael was not light or darkness. It was absence. A miniature black hole of pure gravitational force that made the air scream and the floor crater beneath his feet. The rune arrays in the walls pulsed red — danger warnings from defensive formations that hadn’t been triggered in years.

Cassandra positioned her axe. Both hands on the handle. Gravity compressed around the blade until it hummed with barely contained violence. Her Domination Intent fused with the gravitational energy, giving the attack a will — the desire to crush, to subjugate, to make everything within its reach bow.

”I better not disappoint this little brother of mine.” Her voice carried excitement.

”Sovereign Axe Technique: Heaven’s Mandate. Third Form — Final Verdict.”

She swung.

GRAND SOVEREIGN ART: GRAVITATIONAL PARADOX. Chapter THREE. OBLIVION.

The orb launched.

It met Final Verdict halfway between them.

The two attacks clashed.

Then both techniques pushed for dominance.

Kael felt Oblivion losing. Cassandra’s execution was simply too refined. Her Final Verdict had decades of compression behind it. Hers was a technique that had killed Spirit Soul enemies or even higher. His Oblivion was still far from been refined to a maximum output.

Kael’s mind locked onto the Universal Contract mechanism.

I restrict my lightning manipulation — complete suppression of all lightning-based abilities — for the duration of this technique.

In exchange: 10% boost to all gravity-based output.

The contract formed. He felt it click into place like a key in a lock — the lightning in his body guttering and dying, every electrical impulse converted into raw gravitational power. Lightning Body vanished. Thunder God’s first form collapsed. His body was just a body again.

But Oblivion surged.

The miniature black hole power increase in intensity. The silence deepened into something that hurt to perceive. Final Verdict — Cassandra’s perfect, decades-refined technique — cracked.

Blood dripped from Kael’s eyes.
