The Darkness System: Rise of the Broken Sovereign

The eastern garden of the Sixth Branch residence had become Kael’s unofficial training ground. The mana density was lower here than in the ruins, but the open space and relative privacy made it tolerable.

Elena sat cross-legged beneath a twisted ironwood tree, her eyes closed, mana circulating through her Core Formation pathways with the disciplined rhythm Sophie had drilled into her. Beside her, Nora mimicked the posture with considerably less grace, her small frame wobbling slightly every few seconds.

Kael watched from the porch, a cup of cold tea in his hand.

Nora broke stance first, eyes snapping open. ”Mommy will be back from her family soon.”

”Yeah, I know.” Kael sipped his tea. ”Can’t wait. Come on, keep cultivating.”

”I don’t want to.”

”Do it or I will tell Sophie when she comes back.”

Nora grumbled as she continued cultivating.

Sophie had been visiting her birth family for the past week. A rare luxury granted by the Family Head — likely because he couldn’t be bothered to deny it. Elena and Nora had been managing themselves in her absence, which mostly meant Elena managing Nora.

Kael set down his cup and let his gaze drift over both sisters thoughtfully.

Neither of them had a combat-based ability.

Elena’s Precognition was extraordinary — seeing possible futures was the kind of power that generals and emperors would wage wars to possess. But her visions were fragmented. Impressionistic. She saw possible futures or even pasts but couldn’t distinguish between probability and certainty. Her combat utility was minimal in its current state.

Nora’s Soul Sight was even less directly applicable. She could see souls, detect lies, perceive the emotional states of those around her. Invaluable for intelligence. Useless in a fight.

To the Family Head, they were discards. Not officially — Elena was too politically connected through Sophie, and Nora was too young to evaluate. But in the cold calculus of the Vorn dynasty, children without combat abilities were investments with uncertain returns. Sebastian had at least awakened a beast transformation from their mother’s bloodline, even if it was weak. Elena and Nora had nothing that could kill.

But what if that changed?

Kael pulled up his System interface and navigated to the Body Cultivation section.

He scrolled.

Iron Bone Forging Method (Earth Grade) — Standard body tempering through repeated bone micro-fractures. Effective but painful.

Success rate: 78%. Suitable for all physiques.

Too crude. Elena would hate it.

Jade Maiden Sutra (Sky Grade) — Designed specifically for female cultivators. Gentle meridian conditioning that enhances flexibility and internal resilience while preserving physical softness. Popular among noble families for daughters expected to marry rather than fight.

Useless. I’m not training them to be wives.

Titan’s Foundation (Heaven Grade) — Extreme body hardening through gravitational pressure exposure. Increases bone density by 200% at completion. Requires gravity manipulation to execute properly.

Can’t teach what they don’t have. They don’t have gravity abilities.

Vernal Blossom Body Art (King Grade) — Harmonizes body refinement with innate abilities. Rather than building raw physical power independently, this technique channels the user’s unique abilities through their physical frame, strengthening both simultaneously. The body becomes a conduit rather than a weapon.

Kael stopped scrolling.

He read the description again. Then a third time.

Channels innate abilities through the physical frame. Strengthens both simultaneously.

The body becomes a conduit rather than a weapon.

Elena’s Precognition strengthened through physical refinement. Her body learning to process temporal information the way muscles learned to process force. Nora’s Soul Sight sharpened by heightened sensory organs.

This was exactly what they needed.

Vernal Blossom Body Art (King Grade)

Price: 14,000 Shadow Points

Note: Technique adapts to any innate ability regardless of element or type. Progress is slower than aggressive body cultivation methods but produces fewer injuries and higher long-term synergy. Estimated time to Tier 2 Early: 4-6 months for cultivators with Flawless Cores.

Kael purchased it without hesitation.

He called both sisters over.

Elena approached with wary curiosity. Nora bounced over with none.

”I have something for you,” Kael said.

Elena’s eyes narrowed. ”The last time someone in this family said that to me, it was a knife.”

”This is better.” He transmitted the technique manual to both their wristbands simultaneously. ”Body cultivation. Specifically designed for people whose abilities don’t involve punching things.”

Elena pulled up the manual on her wristband and began reading. Her expression shifted from suspicion to confusion to cautious interest.

”This channels our abilities through our physical refinement?” she asked.

”Your Precognition is limited by the hardware it runs on,” Kael said. ”Right now, your brain and body can barely handle the temporal information you receive. That’s why your visions are fragmented. If you refine your body using this technique, your physical frame becomes better at processing what your ability shows you. Clearer visions. Faster interpretation. Less headache after.”

Elena’s breath caught slightly. She had never told him about the headaches.

Nora was still scrolling through the manual with the focused intensity of a child reading a storybook. ”What about me? I just look at souls.”

”Your Soul Sight strains your eyes and your nervous system. Body refinement through this method will strengthen both. You’ll see more, see deeper, and it won’t hurt as much.”

Nora looked up. ”It hurts?”

”Don’t lie to me, little owl.”

She looked away. ”...Sometimes.”

Kael ruffled her hair. ”You can start cultivating tonight. Both of you. I don’t care if you’re tired or if your homework isn’t done. This is more important than anything Sophie or the family tutors are teaching you.”

Elena folded her arms. ”You’re giving us a King Grade technique just like that?”

”Just like that.”

”Why?”

Kael met her eyes as he pat their heads. ”Because you’re my cute little sisters. And because I refuse to let this family decide your worth based on whether you can throw a punch.”

Elena didn’t respond for a long moment. Then she nodded and transmitted the manual to her personal storage.

”Thank you,” she said quietly.

”Don’t thank me yet. The first three layers are excruciating.”

Two weeks dissolved into routine.

Kael trained. That was the entirety of his existence. Morning body refinement. Midday technique drilling. Afternoon domain seed nurturing. Evening comprehension study using the calming herbs he’d purchased. Night meditation with the Mantra.

His new techniques demanded attention. Lightning Body — the King Grade technique from the IGF library — required him to convert his physical form into living lightning, a process that felt like dissolving and reconstructing himself simultaneously. The Thunder God Technique’s first form was even stranger. It didn’t make him faster. It made his perception faster, synchronizing his nervous system with electrical signal speed so that he processed information at the speed of thought rather than the speed of nerve conduction.

The two techniques complemented each other terrifyingly. Lightning Body gave him the physical speed. Thunder God gave him the mental speed to use it without crashing into walls.

His gravity domain seed grew slowly. Five percent efficiency now, up from twelve.

On the fourteenth day, his wristband chimed.

Cassandra’s message.

Kael dressed carefully. Not armor — that would signal hostility. Not finery — that would signal submission. Simple black jacket.

The administrative wing was the nervous system of the Vorn family. Hundreds of servants, analysts, and operatives processed information that governed thirteen worlds. The third floor was Cassandra’s personal domain.

A butler — elderly, immaculate, with silver hair and a posture that suggested military background — met Kael at the entrance and guided him without a word.

Cassandra’s office was larger than the entire Sixth Branch residence.

Bookshelves lined every wall. Holographic displays showed real-time data from multiple worlds. A massive desk dominated one corner, buried under tablets and documents. But the center of the room was clear — two chairs facing each other across a low table where a tea set waited.

Cassandra sat in one chair. She wore a dark violet military uniform with the Vorn crest on her collar. Her hair — black like his, but longer — was pulled back in a severe braid. Her eyes were the Family Head’s eyes: cold, calculating, and utterly unreadable.

The butler retreated to a position behind her chair.

”Hello, sister.” Kael smiled. ”Lovely office. Very intimidating.”

”That arrogant air of yours.” Cassandra didn’t smile. ”It hasn’t changed.”

”Would you prefer I tremble?”

”I’d prefer you be less arrogant. But I’ll settle for entertaining.” She gestured to the opposite chair. ”Sit.”

He sat. She poured tea.

”Happy birthday, little brother.”

Kael’s hand paused halfway to the cup.

He stared at her.

Then he laughed.

”I forgot my own birthday.”

”Twenty years old today.” Cassandra sipped her tea. ”The family doesn’t celebrate birthdays. You know that. But I thought you should know that someone remembered.”

He picked up the cup. The tea was excellent — something floral with an undertone of spice.

They drank in silence for a moment. Then Cassandra began talking.

”Victor has been consolidating his control over the eastern military garrisons. Three fleet commanders now report directly to him rather than through the standard chain of command. Father allows it because Victor is competent and because it keeps Victor occupied.” She set down her cup. ”Marcus has taken a different approach. He’s building a coalition among the younger branches. Promises of territory, resource access, arranged marriages. He’s persuasive when he wants to be — our mother’s charm, our father’s ruthlessness.”

”Charming isn’t the word I’d use for Marcus.”

”Thalia is quieter. She’s strengthening the research division’s independence. Making it so that whichever sibling wins, they’ll need her. Quite smart, I would say. Very her.” Cassandra’s fingers traced the rim of her cup. ”Felix is the most overt. He’s already meeting with branch heads publicly. Framing himself as the diplomatic successor — someone who can maintain alliances that a more aggressive heir might fracture. It’s a good pitch. Wrong audience, but a good pitch.”

Kael listened without interrupting. This was intelligence he couldn’t get anywhere else.

”Isabella wants nothing to do with any of it,” Cassandra continued. ”She’ll serve whoever wins. Diana is the same — she doesn’t care about power, only about being left alone. Sebastian has attached himself to Marcus like a remora.”

”No surprise there.”

”The Blades are picking sides too. Numbers Three, Five, and Nine have been seen meeting with Victor. Seven and Eight favor Felix. The rest are officially neutral.” Her eyes settled on Kael. ”Elena and Nora are too young. Caelus... I haven’t figured out Caelus yet. He watches everything and says nothing. Either he’s very patient or very empty.”

She paused.

”Then there’s you.”

”Me.”

”You’re a mystery, Kael. You left this estate as a Core Formation nobody with a dead mother and no allies. You returned as a Mana Heart cultivator with a purple grade talent, a tournament victory, and a reputation that makes half the family nervous.” Her expression didn’t change. ”And you’ve been fucking one of father’s whores.”

Kael sipped his tea. ”I prefer the term ’stepmother.’”

”The term is ’property.’ Sophie belongs to this family. Father can discard her whenever he chooses.”

”I’m fairly certain the old man is aware of the situation.” Kael’s calm smirk didn’t waver. ”After all, I’m a man first before a son. And Sophie is a woman first before a wife.”

Cassandra stared at him for a long moment. Then she sighed.

”Your courage is really something else.”

She set down her cup.

Then her expression turned serious.

”What is it you truly desire, Kael?”
