The Darkness System: Rise of the Broken Sovereign

Aria stood at the threshold of the Sixth Branch residence, her travel pack slung over one shoulder.

”Two weeks,” Kael said, leaning against the doorframe with his arms crossed. ”Maybe three. The Shadow Guild has training facilities I can’t replicate here.”

”I know.” She adjusted the strap. ”Don’t die.”

”Disappointing. I was hoping for something more sentimental.”

Her violet eyes flickered with something between annoyance and affection. ”Don’t fuck anyone while I’m gone.”

”No promises.”

She left without looking back.

Kael watched her silhouette disappear down the corridor, then shut the door and exhaled slowly. The Sixth Branch residence was exactly as he had left it two years ago — sparse, cold, and deliberately uninviting.

He dropped onto the narrow bed staring at the ceiling.

The throne room replayed in his mind.

He was sure that now, his siblings will target him even more now. They will come with greater intensity. Afterall, only him and Cassandra now had purple grade talent among the heirs.

What irritated him was the gap.

Mana Heart Rank 1. That was his reality. Against siblings who had spent decades accumulating techniques, forging alliances, and stockpiling resources, he was a child holding a knife in a room full of trained assassins. Cassandra had been cultivating since before his mother was even taken into this family. Victor was so mysterious his intention was even more mysterious than his other siblings. Marcus had armies.

Nine months. That was his real timeline. The inheritance ground opened in nine months. He needed to prepare and gather enough strength so that he can gain even more strength in the inheritance ground.

Cultivate. Practice. Refine. Maybe call Lyra for Guardian missions if the boredom became unbearable.

One step at a time.

A knock interrupted his planning.

”Come in.”

The door swung open and two figures burst through simultaneously. Elena — sixteen now, tall for her age, with their mother’s sharp cheekbones and their father’s cold eyes softened by something almost warm — grabbed his arm and yanked him into a sitting position. Nora — thirteen, small, silver-haired, with those disturbing Soul Sight eyes that saw too much — climbed onto the bed beside him without invitation.

”Kael!” Elena’s voice carried the particular excitement of someone who had been waiting hours to explode with questions. ”Tell me everything. I want to hear about the academy. The other students. Everything.”

”Everything is quite a lot.”

”Then start talking and stop stalling.”

He laughed. Elena had always been able to drag that out of him. She was the one of the only sibling who treated him like a person rather than a variable in a political equation.

So he talked.

He told them about the Iron Tier dormitory with its view of the garbage facility. About the tournament on Planet Athelas where he had broken a Bronze Tier wrist and walked out of the ring. About Cassian Vale. About Karacus.

He left out the deaths. The torture. The demon that had nearly killed them all on Hevaria.

Some stories weren’t for thirteen-year-old ears.

Elena listened with hungry attention, interrupting constantly for details. Nora listened quietly, her silver eyes tracking his face with that unsettling intensity.

Then Elena’s expression shifted. She crossed her arms, tilted her head, and gave him a look that was pure Vorn calculation wrapped in sisterly curiosity.

”So,” she said slowly. ”How many girlfriends did you have apart from sister Aria?”

Kael paused. ”Sister Aria?”

”You know what I mean.”

”I genuinely don’t.”

”Aria follows you around like a shadow. Which, I suppose, is literally true given her abilities. But she’s not the only one, is she?” Elena’s eyes narrowed. ”I overheard a servant saying something about you having quite the time with women at the academy.”

”Servants talk too much.”

”That’s not a denial.”

”When exactly did you and Aria become so close?”

Elena’s cheeks colored slightly. ”She came to visit me while you were gone. We had tea.”

Nora tugged his sleeve. Her small fingers were cold. ”She wasn’t lying about the tea. But she was lying about why she came.”

Kael ruffled Nora’s hair — a gesture he’d been doing since she was small enough to fit in one arm. ”Don’t look too deep into things that don’t concern you, little owl.”

Nora pouted but said nothing else. She knew when to stop pushing. For a thirteen-year-old with Soul Sight, that restraint was remarkable.

They stayed for two hours.

Elena talked about her academy preparations — the entrance exam in four years, the political maneuvering already happening among the younger branches, the techniques she was struggling to master. Kael listened with genuine interest and offered advice where he could. Her Precognition ability made her valuable but also fragile. The family would try to use her. He needed to make sure she knew how to be used without being consumed.

Nora asked questions about the outside universe that made Elena groan with embarrassment. What did other planets look like? Were there cities in the sky? Did people really ride giant beasts? Were elves real?

Kael answered both sisters with equal patience. Elena’s questions were strategic. Nora’s were innocent. Both deserved honesty.

When they finally stood to leave, Elena hesitated at the door.

She turned and hugged him.

Her arms tight around his torso, her face pressed against his shoulder, her body trembling almost imperceptibly.

”I saw you,” she whispered so quietly that even Nora couldn’t hear. ”You were in a room been tortured.”

Kael said nothing.

”Promise me you’ll come back from this inheritance ground.”

”No promises.”, Kael murmurs silently.

She left with Nora in tow. The door clicked shut.

Kael stood in the silence of his room for a long moment. Then he showered, changed into sleeping clothes, and lay down.

Sleep came fast.

It was quite rare for him to have dreams but it seems this house had a way of pulling out things about him.

Not darkness — black. The absence of everything. No ground beneath his feet. No sky above. No temperature. No sound. Just an infinite void that pressed against his consciousness like a physical weight.

Then something appeared.

A symbol, floating in the emptiness. It burned itself into his vision with the certainty of something that had existed before existence itself.

A serpent coiled around a sword, wreathed in shadow and starlight.

The image pulsed once — like a heartbeat — and Kael felt something stir deep in his chest. Recognition. As if a lock inside him had been brushed by its key.

Then the void collapsed, and he was awake.

Kael sat up in bed, breathing hard, sweat cooling on his skin. Dawn light crept through the narrow window. His hand moved before his mind caught up — grabbing the charcoal pencil from the nightstand, pressing it to the blank page of a journal he kept for rune practice.

He drew the symbol.

Every line felt inevitable. Every curve felt remembered. He didn’t know how he knew the proportions, the exact angle of the coils, the way the starlight threaded through the shadow like veins through flesh. But his hand moved with absolute certainty.

When he finished, he stared at the drawing for a long time.

System.

[Yes, host?]

What is this?

A pause.

[I have no data on this symbol. It does not match any known crests, runes, or technique markers in my database. I cannot analyze it. I cannot explain why you dreamt it.]

Useless.

[I try my best. But it seems the host is more useless for not building allies before now]

Kael closed the journal and set it on the nightstand. The symbol stared up at him from the cover where the charcoal had smudged slightly.

He filed it away as a problem for later.

The system was quite right. He should have started building his own personal soldiers before now. The only soldier he had right now was Aria. Later, he planned to take over the shadow guild. Afterall, they will be useful in his future fights against his siblings.

Right now, he had nine months. And a domain to build.

Dawn broke over World Thirteen with the same heavy mana pressure that had greeted him yesterday.

His morning routine was like a ritual by now. Void Body Refinement first — Tier 4 Mid meant his bones could withstand stress that would shatter normal cultivators, but pushing toward Tier 4 Late required consistent punishment. He spent forty minutes in the gravity-amplified training room beneath the Sixth Branch residence, letting increased gravitational force compress his muscles and bones in controlled cycles using the void body technique to cultivate his body.

Mana circulation came next. The Mantra of the Void Sovereign moved through his meridians like a living thing, filtering ambient mana through his Transcendent Core with mechanical precision. Afterall, his mana capacity has been one of the things that had kept him going in most fights above him.

Technique review filled the next hour. He ran through each form of the Sky Rending Technique until the movements lived in his muscles rather than his mind. Lightning Fang until the shaping felt instinctive. SILENCE until the fusion of gravity and lightning required no conscious effort to initiate.

Then he sat in the center of the training room and reached for something that had been dormant since the tournament.
