Greatest Legacy of the Magus Universe

Chapter 658: A Bitter Smile

Qamaraʼs body involuntarily shuddered when she heard Adam speak those words. She looked deep into his eyes, remaining silent for a few moments.

”What… did you say?” She asked in disbelief. Suddenly, she was overcome by rage and she couldnʼt help but blurt out. ”Adam, youʼre lying to me! You keep lying to me over and over again. I donʼt trust a word you say!”

Her sudden burst of emotions caught the attention of a few people standing nearby. They looked at the pair in amusement, ready to witness a drama unfold between the couple.

Adam scanned his surroundings and was relieved to find that only a handful of people had overheard Qamara just now. He then looked at the elf and solemnly said, ”Come with me.”

He then grabbed her hand and led her to the expansive main area of the first floor that served as the dance floor.

Qamara wanted to yank her hand out of Adamʼs grip but was suddenly startled when she saw him covertly using her hand to form what appeared to be hand seals!

This… It canʼt be, she thought to herself in disbelief.

Rank 1 Spell: Mind Whisper!

The very next moment, Adamʼs voice rang inside her head, ʼQamara, please! You must give me a chance to explain myself. I am being framed! Please, just… give me a chance, will you?ʼ

He really did use my hand to execute the physical component of the spell… Qamara thought to herself in a daze. Before this, she could never imagine such a thing to be possible.

But his voice… she thought as she gazed at Adam hold her hand and lead her past the other couples toward the center of the dance floor. He sounds so desperate… and heartbroken.

A live band consisting of a dozen professional artists played their musical instruments, bathing the manor in an uplifting mood. It was the perfect vibe for all the guests at the event to dance and enjoy themselves.

Adam stopped somewhere near the center of the dance floor. He turned around and stepped closer to Qamara. Then he placed his right hand around her waist, pulling her closer, and stretched his left hand a little sideways, beckoning to her to place her hand on his.

Qamaraʼs heart started to beat faster. She was close enough to catch the scent of Adamʼs cologne. She couldnʼt help but involuntarily gulp when she felt an unfamiliar feeling bubble up deep inside her heart.

For a moment, she forgot about how she snapped at Adam a few moments ago. Her body seemed to move on its own and she found her left hand gently resting on the back of Adamʼs neck and her right hand holding onto his left.

Her breathing turned a little ragged as she found it difficult to look into the eyes of the man holding her. Finally, she gathered the courage to meet eyes with him, but when she did, she was startled.

Adamʼs eyes were deep and profound. They seemed to contain infinite mysteries in them, yet at the moment they were filled with grief and sorrow.

She couldnʼt help but gently call out to him, ”Adam, you…”

ʼPretend like everythingʼs normal,ʼ Adam mentally transmitted to the elf, interrupting her. He then skillfully guided her, dancing to the tune of the live band, fully immersing in the music along with the rest of the people.

Sensing the seriousness in his voice, Qamara imperceptibly nodded her head and followed his lead.

ʼIt all started with the attempted assassination of Brigham Flynn, the patriarch of the Flynn Family,ʼ Adam began in a somber mood.

ʼThe thievesʼ guild known as the Umbra Thieves planned to assassinate him for reasons unknown. Their plan was almost successful, that was until I came into the whole scenario.

ʼI was able to cure Lord Flynn with an antidote I brewed. But in doing so, I was pulled into the wave of misfortunes that was the feud between the Flynn Family and the Umbra Thieves.ʼ

Qamara aptly listened to Adamʼs story. Of course, she knew that there was an assassination attempt on Brigham Flynn many years ago as well as the ongoing war between the Flynn Family and the Umbra Thieves.

This matter had stirred quite the storm in Ravenfell a few years ago as the Flynn Family started waging war on all the members of the thievesʼ guild operating in the city. Everyone in the city practically knew about this conflict.

What Qamara didnʼt know was that Adam was the one who saved Brigham Flynn from being eventually murdered.

ʼSince the Umbra Thieves came to know that I was the one to thwart thier plans, theyʼve sent people after me time and time again in order to kill me,ʼ said Adam in a tone filled with sorrow and indignation.

ʼThings had escalated to such a degree that I didnʼt even step foot out of Ravenfell for years, fearing that I would be assassinated.ʼ

Adam paused for a moment, his eyes turning slightly teary. He took a deep breath and continued, ʼA ray of hope shined on me when the Flynn Family eradicated all the members of the Umbra Thieves from the city.ʼ

He then added in a self-deprecating tone, ʼBut thatʼs when my true misfortunes began. I thought the threat of the Umbra Thieves was over, but I couldnʼt be more wrong.ʼ

Qamaraʼs heart was filled with complicated emotions. She could feel the deep sadness, regret, and bitterness in Adamʼs voice that echoed directly inside her head. It was contagious and soon she too couldnʼt help but start to resonate with his emotions.

Her hand squeezed Adamʼs hand lightly and she gestured for him to continue.

Adamʼs lips curled up into a bitter smile, a mocking smile. ʼI was foolish to think that the Umbra Thieves would leave me alone. Foolish, oh, so foolish of me, Qamara. Little did I know, they had secretly allied with a noble family of Ravenfell to bring about my doom.ʼ

Realization started to dawn on Qamara and Adamʼs following words only confirmed it.

Adamʼs heart seemingly bled with hatred as he mentally transmitted, ʼThe Duskfall Family went after the person who was like a brother to me! He was my childhood friend, someone whom I trusted with all my heart.ʼ

His eyes flashed with fury and he continued, ʼThis accursed family murdered my brother in cold blood. They murdered Daneli, oh, they murdered him! And I…

ʼI am here to seek revenge!ʼ
