Tech Giants: Starting from Bankrupt Companies

51: Chapter 51: At the Beginning of the New Year, a Storm of SanctionsThe spring of 2017 did not bring much warmth to Spark Group. Just as March arrived, a long-brewing and meticulously planned cold current swept in from across the ocean with thunderous force.

March 3rd, Washington D.C.

The United States Department of Commerce held a high-profile press conference. A cold-faced secretary stood behind the podium, reading out a sanctions list dozens of pages long in a flat tone. This list was almost a custom-made noose for Spark Technology.

“Based on the urgent need to maintain national security and foreign policy, and following an interagency joint assessment,” the secretary’s voice echoed globally through the microphone, “the Chinese Spark Group (Spark Group) and its primary affiliates—including but not limited to Spark Power, Xinghuo Chip, Xingchen Heavy Industry, and Spark-Arab Defense Company—are officially being added to the ‘Entity List’.”

As soon as these words were spoken, the room erupted in an uproar, even though many had long expected it.

The sanctions measures were specific and ruthless:

* **Total Market Ban**: All Spark Group products are prohibited from being sold, operated, or even provided with technical services in the U.S. market. Simultaneously, the United States is strongly urging and pressuring its allies—including major developed economies like the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan, and South Korea—to take synchronized action. Overnight, Spark Technology’s revenue in core overseas consumer markets like North America and Europe plummeted to zero.

* **Technical Lockdown and Supply Cutoff**: The United States and its allies are implementing the strictest technical and equipment embargoes on Spark. The targets are the very foundations of Spark’s survival and development: high-end EDA (Electronic Design Automation) software for chip design, special composite materials and high-performance alloys for high-end machine tools and drone structures, and advanced chip manufacturing equipment and key components for processes at 7nm and below.

* **Long-arm Jurisdiction and Isolation**: The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the United States Department of the Treasury issued formal notices to all multinational corporations worldwide doing business with Spark, threatening them with “secondary sanctions.” If they continue to cooperate with Spark, they face the immense risk of being excluded from the American financial system. This move is intended to completely sever Spark’s connection to the international industrial chain.

When the news reached China, it was like pouring ice water into a boiling vat of oil.

The capital markets were the first to react. On March 4th, when the A-share market opened, despite signs of the National Team supporting the market, Spark Technology’s stock price still dropped sharply, at one point falling by more than 8%. Panic began to spread.

“It’s over, they’re playing for keeps this time!”

“All the major global markets are gone; how can we even play anymore?”

“Technical lockdowns and material supply cutoffs—this is a total strike at the roots!”

Some customers with close ties to international markets, such as component manufacturers supplying global automotive giants, began calling Spark Power under immense pressure. They spoke with difficulty, stating they needed to “re-evaluate their cooperation” or even directly canceling some orders.

Mainstream domestic media quickly followed up with reports, unanimously condemning this bullying behavior, but anxiety still permeated the internet. Spark Technology, a national enterprise that had just displayed supreme glory at its annual meeting, seemed to be pushed to the edge of a cliff in an instant.

On the massive circular screen wall, real-time stock price fluctuations of major global markets, summaries of feedback from affected customers, and detailed analyses of the sanctions clauses were displayed. The atmosphere was so heavy it felt like water could be wrung from the air. All core executives and the general managers of the six major subsidiaries were connected to the meeting, either in person or online.

Su Chen sat in the primary seat, showing no trace of panic. He possessed an extreme calmness, as if the torrential waves outside had nothing to do with him. His gaze swept across every face on the screen—some solemn, some angry, some resolute.

“You’ve all seen it?” Su Chen’s voice broke the silence, terrifyingly steady. “This time, they want our lives.”

No one spoke, but everyone’s eyes gave the answer.

“They think that by sealing off all export routes and cutting off all external supplies, they can trap and starve this ship of ours in the harbor.” Su Chen slowly stood up, walked to the screen, and pointed at the world map. “They are wrong! They are trying to trap us by forcing us back into the domestic market. But they forgot, or rather, they deliberately ignored one thing—the Chinese market itself is a vast and boundless sea of stars!”

His voice suddenly rose, carrying a resolution of burning one’s bridges: “From now on, initiate the highest level of emergency response! Execute two core strategies—the ‘Deep Root Plan’ and ‘Operation Wall-Breaker’!”

“Deep Root Plan”: Internally, consolidate the foundation and build the sturdiest internal circulation fortress.

* **Binding the Ecosystem, Huddling for Warmth**: Su Chen personally called CEOs of domestic giants like CEO Ren of Huawei and Chairman Li Fu of Geely. Within a few hours, an emergency joint press conference was held in Shenzhen. Spark Group, along with over ten industry leaders including Huawei, Geely, Xiaomi, Changan, and Great Wall, jointly signed the “Strategic Symbiosis Agreement.” The core of the agreement included: establishing a shared pool for key technologies, prioritizing the procurement of products within the alliance, jointly handling international intellectual property disputes, and setting up a joint R&D fund. An embryonic “China Technology Community,” bound by Spark’s core technology and covering communications, automobiles, and consumer electronics, began to take shape.

* **Supply Chain Security, Self-Reliance**: Su Chen gave a death order to Wu Yi, General Manager of Spark Materials, and Zhao Tiezhu, General Manager of Spark Industry: “Dr. Wu, the list of embargoed special composite materials has been sent to you. I’ll give you whatever money or people you need. I don’t care about the process, only the results! Old Zhao, for the industrial software alternatives, work with the research institute on a joint assault. Get our own products out as quickly as possible!”

“Operation Wall-Breaker”: Externally, form alliances to tear a rift in the Iron Curtain.

* **Platform Transformation, Enhancing Value**: Shen Nanpeng, representing Spark Group, announced a major strategic adjustment: “Spark Power will undergo a comprehensive upgrade. We will no longer be just a battery supplier. We will offer global car manufacturers a complete three-electric system platform solution, encompassing ‘Divine Travel/Bedrock batteries + Qingtian Electric Drive System + Intelligent Vehicle Domain Controller’.” This meant car companies could directly adopt Spark’s full set of mature solutions, significantly shortening R&D cycles and reducing costs and risks. This was immensely attractive to many traditional car companies struggling with the transition to electrification.

* **Forming Alliances, Key Breakthroughs**: Leveraging the technical advantages and enticing cost-effectiveness of the platform solutions, Spark concentrated its efforts on targeting major second-tier international car giants that were unwilling to be restricted by American technological hegemony, such as Germany’s Volkswagen and Japan’s Toyota. Simultaneously, they increased investment in non-U.S. markets (such as Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Latin America), avoiding direct conflict and becoming indispensable “unsung heroes” and “arms dealers” behind their new energy transitions.

While the top management was strategizing, a market counterattack close to the hearts of the people was also being launched with great fanfare domestically.

Spark Technology’s official flagship stores on major e-commerce platforms like Taomao and Jingxi simultaneously launched a massive “National Goods Self-Strengthening, Spark Escort” themed Super Brand Day event.

The main featured product was a bundle called the “Spark Smart Life Set,” which included the latest spark 3 drone, a Spirit Eye 2 action camera, and a newly released smart bracelet equipped with health monitoring and a “Flint” low-power chip. The set’s price was extremely aggressive, practically equivalent to buying the drone and getting the camera and bracelet for free.

The slogan struck a chord: “Use our own technology to record our own lives!”

At the same time, Spark announced an acceleration of its channel penetration strategy, planning to establish over 1,000 authorized experience stores and after-sales service outlets in third- and fourth-tier cities and even county towns across the country within a year, extending the reach of its services to every nerve ending of the market.

Public sentiment was completely ignited at this moment.

“Support national goods, support Spark!”

“Before, I couldn’t afford big foreign brands. Now our own brands have better technology and better prices. There’s no reason not to support them!”

“Set ordered! Not for anything else, just to show some backbone!”

A news story about a junior student using earnings from a part-time job to buy a Spark smart bracelet to support national goods was reposted by multiple media outlets, triggering widespread social resonance and demonstrating Spark Technology’s deep roots in public opinion.

Sales data on e-commerce platforms jumped frantically. Just one hour after the event started, sales of the “Spark Smart Life Set” exceeded one billion; within twenty-four hours, it set a new record for single-day sales in the digital product category on the platform! Spark’s massive consumer electronics production capacity found a surging outlet in the domestic market.

Although revenue from developed overseas markets plummeted, Spark Group—this giant ship—managed to stubbornly stabilize its basic operations thanks to the explosive growth of the domestic market, the battery and electric drive system orders obtained through “Operation Wall-Breaker” in regions like Russia, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia (where revenue increased significantly), and the stable output of its defense business. Even after a sudden collision with an iceberg, the ship remained steady through deep reserves and timely course corrections, despite the violent shaking.

Preliminary financial estimates showed that the company’s revenue structure was undergoing a profound and healthy transformation: dependence on a single overseas market was significantly reduced, with domestic demand and diversified international markets becoming new growth engines. This sanctions storm, intended to kill, instead accelerated Spark Technology’s strategic metamorphosis from a consumer-facing brand into a platform and solution provider that controlled core technologies.

The storm had not yet subsided, but Spark had already found a new course amidst the wind and rain.
