“Dear family, this is An’an’s mother-in-law, Chen Lei.” Even Chen Lei felt apologetic for disturbing people’s dreams so early in the morning.

“Oh, it’s Mother-in-law. What brings you to call so early?” An Ruge didn’t expect to receive a call from the Lis so early. Could something have happened to An’an?

“Well, An’an is starting labor. We are preparing to take her to the hospital for delivery. We thought we should inform you and the mother-in-law.” Chen Lei explained, feeling it was inappropriate to withhold such information.

“Really? I see. Thank you, Mother-in-law. Which hospital are you taking her to?” An Ruge was stunned. He was about to be a grandfather and soon would see his grandchild. He also wondered how An’an was doing.

“We are taking her to the Armed Forces General Hospital. An’an is currently having a meal and hasn’t gone yet, so don’t worry.” Chen Lei reassured him, noting his anxious tone.

“Alright, let me inform Xiang’er. I bet she would want to be by An’an’s side at this time.” An Ruge mentioned.

He had to inform his wife, who was also pregnant for a few months now. Even though she was pregnant later than their daughter, this child was one they had been hoping for years. They had always wanted to give their daughter a companion, but their wish had not been fulfilled over the years.

Now that his wife was pregnant with a baby younger than their grandchild, they had their doubts. But thinking about An’an being left all alone without any kin to accompany her when they eventually pass away, they decided to keep the child.

This was the best gift they could give to their daughter – a brother, or a sister.

“Okay, you and mother-in-law take your time. Don’t rush. I’ll inform the family on the maternal side.” Chen Lei said with a laugh, realizing there was still another phone call to make.

“Alright, thank you all for your efforts.” An Ruge hung up the phone and returned to the room. Seeing his wife still asleep, he didn’t know whether to wake her up or not.

“Ruge, why are you standing there? You could have slept a little longer.” Xiao Xiang’er felt someone was standing by and was startled. Once she saw her husband, she calmed down.

“Xiang’er, I have something to tell you. Please, don’t overreact.” An Ruge said with a smile.

“What’s the matter, making such a fuss?” Xiao Xiang’er yawned, staring at her husband.

“An’an is about to give birth.” An Ruge couldn’t stop smiling, but deep down he was worried and aggrieved.

“She’s in labor? Ruge, get my clothes quickly. I need to be by her side. An’an must be scared now.” Upon hearing this, Xiao Xiang’er freaked out. Her daughter must be fearful and insecure. As a mother, she must be there with her.

“Xiang’er, don’t rush. Mother-in-law said An’an is having breakfast at home. They are taking An’an to the Armed Forces General Hospital to give birth later. So you need to eat something first, for you’d need strength to accompany An’an. Right?” An Ruge had anticipated his wife’s reaction and had figured out a plan.

“You’re right. Then get me something to eat quickly. Keep it simple.” Upon hearing this, Xiao Xiang’er thought it made sense. Therefore, she asked her husband to prepare food for her, as his cooking was better.

So since their marriage, apart from when they eat at the canteen, he would always prepare meals at home.

Xiao Xiang’er usually assisted. Meal preparation was faster this way, allowing them to get back to work right away. They didn’t have much time to spend with their child, and that’s why An’an lived with her grandparents and was raised by them. Therefore, their relationship with their daughter seemed a bit strained.
