150: Chapter 150 Server Migration: Night and the Glimmer of FingertipsThe response from Zack Snyder’s studio was faster than expected.

It wasn’t an email, but a direct call to Alex’s private mobile phone. The director’s own voice came through the receiver, carrying a hint of hoarseness from staying up late and an irrepressible excitement:

”Alex? This is Zack. That ’Sonic Journey’ you sent... I’ve listened to it three times. During the first listen, my art director almost bet me that this was definitely ripped from the final mix of some completed film.”

Alex was driving to the office and smiled upon hearing this, adjusting his Bluetooth headset. ”Does that count as a positive review, Director?”

”It counts! Of course it counts!” Zack spoke rapidly. ”It let me ’see’ things beyond the frame. Cold ruins of data, struggling fragments of humanity, and that final shimmer that refuses to go out... This is exactly the core I wanted to express in ’city of instantaneity’ but hadn’t quite found the right sensory medium for. Your ’Sonic Narrative’ has given me a new dimension.”

He paused, his tone becoming more formal. ”So, a formal invitation. I want you and your team to join the project as ’Special Guest Sonic Narrative Consultants.’ Specifically, I need you to establish a set of iconic, scalable sonic identity systems for three core concepts in the film: ’Data Torrent,’ ’Memory Graveyard,’ and ’Ark of Consciousness.’ Budget is not an issue, the timeline follows post-production, and I need your most unique creativity, not the fastest delivery.”

These were nearly the ideal conditions for collaboration: high degree of freedom, involvement at the core creative level, and endorsement from a top-tier project. Alex could even feel that Zack, on the other end of the phone, was more like a creative madman who had found a new toy than a penny-pinching producer.

”We are honored, Director,” Alex replied decisively. ”I’ll have the team handle the contract details. We’ll produce a more detailed conceptual proposal soon.”

Hanging up the phone, he turned the steering wheel and drove into the Echo Vision underground parking lot. With just one phone call, another heavyweight puzzle piece had been added to his professional map. This sense of accomplishment from constantly expanding his territory and gaining top-tier recognition was simple and direct.

Walking into the office, Marcus was already waiting, wearing an ’as expected’ expression. ”Boss, the people from Zack Snyder’s project team have already contacted legal, and the terms they offered are very generous. Also, as per your request, the migration of core audio data will begin at midnight tonight. It’s expected to last four hours, during which there will be delays in accessing some materials. Relevant teams have been notified.”

”Understood.” Alex nodded. This kind of back-end, foundational work was like reinforcing a house’s foundation—invisible normally, but vital. He trusted Marcus and The Architect’s technical team to handle it well.

The afternoon’s work proceeded as usual. Submissions for the third week’s theme of ’Echo Puzzle,’ ’Breath of the City,’ reached a new high. Users uploaded the roar of subways, whispers in cafes, the hum of late-night convenience store freezers, children laughing in parks... countless fragments together forming the pulse of the city. As Alex listened to these sounds, his [Ecological Resonance] trait allowed him to more clearly perceive the emotions of the contributors—mostly love and the joy of recording life. This feeling of being faintly connected to tens of thousands of people through sound was wonderful and fulfilling.

He selected several sounds filled with contradictory beauty: a sharp siren against a street performer’s gentle violin; dense keyboard typing against the distant tolling of a church bell. He dragged them into the arrangement software and began building the skeleton for the new week’s co-created single. The creative process itself was the best form of relaxation and cultivation.

In the evening, Taylor came by for a ”site visit” with takeout, and to discuss the specific direction of the film’s sonic identity. The two of them ate pizza while sketching on a whiteboard, various wild ideas popping up and being polished into shape. The boundary between work and life was blurred between them, but this state of moving toward a common goal made them both feel at ease.

”By the way,” Taylor said, licking cheese off her finger, ”it seems resources for the second phase of ’Spirit of the Wasteland’ have started arriving. I heard people in the logistics department muttering that some boxes are incredibly heavy, and the labels are all undecipherable codes.”

”Hmm, let him study it then.” Alex waved his hand dismissively, handing her a slice of pizza. ”As long as he doesn’t blow up the lab, let him be. We provide the stage, he provides the suspense; we each get what we need.”

Despite saying that, when he stayed late in the office alone, looking at the city lights outside and preparing for his daily routine of ability refinement, his thoughts couldn’t help but drift to that ’Special Note’ and the core data servers currently undergoing migration.

Security upgrades were necessary. But passive defense is never enough.

He called up the system interface, his gaze once again locking onto [Energy Perception (Primary)]. Exchange conditions: 50 million points of available popularity, and the analysis of the ’Spirit of the Wasteland’ energy signature.

He had enough popularity. As for analyzing the signature... perhaps he didn’t need to fully understand the other party’s research, but only needed to ’perceive’ an ’abnormal’ object the other party had touched or was using, up close and consciously, just once?

He remembered those special sensors in the resource list. There might be one in the first batch of delivered goods.

”Hank,” he connected to the internal comms, ”of the special equipment delivered today for the Nevada Project, are there any that have been unboxed for inspection but haven’t been moved yet? Ideally something with obvious signs of use.”

Minutes later, Hank replied: ”Yes. A briefcase used to carry some kind of precision sonic receiving unit. The casing has slight wear from use, and inside there are minute traces of specific frequency resonance left after calibration. It’s been left in the security room for a final review per protocol.”

”I’m coming over to take a look.”

In the security room, the silver-gray briefcase sat quietly on the inspection table. It looked ordinary, but it felt heavy when picked up. Alex asked everyone else to leave, facing it alone.

He didn’t open the case, but simply pressed his hands lightly against both sides of the shell, closed his eyes, and tried to activate his faint but real [Rule Contact Perception].

At first, there was nothing. Only the cold touch of metal.

He concentrated, no longer trying to ’hear’ or ’see,’ but to feel the subtle disturbances of ’probability’ and ’causality’ that might exist in the unseen. He imagined himself as a finely tuned string, resonating with the vibration of another special string that might exist.

Time passed bit by bit.

Just as he thought there would be no harvest and was prepared to give up—

Beneath his fingertips, inside the case, there seemed to come an extremely faint ’hum’ that could not be captured by hearing. It wasn’t a sound, but more like... the ’imprint’ of some extremely high-frequency vibration remaining in the medium, or perhaps, a wisp of bound ’anomaly’ that was incompatible with the normal physical environment, dissipating extremely slowly.

At the same time, he seemed to ’see’ an extremely thin, almost invisible ’ripple’ centered on the box, spreading faintly for an instant before sinking into the surrounding ordinary movement of air molecules, leaving no further trace.

That was it!

Alex opened his eyes, his heart rate accelerating slightly. Although the perceived information was blurred and unclear, this was indeed some kind of ’energy signature’ beyond the scope of ordinary acoustics, directly related to the ’Spirit of the Wasteland’.

The system interface responded immediately:

[Analyzable related target ’Abnormal Energy Residual Signature (Weak/Decaying State)’ detected...]

[Analyzing... 1%... 5%... 15%...]

[Analysis Completion: 31% (Limited by residual intensity and information integrity)]

[Prompt: This analysis level has met the signature analysis requirement in the exchange conditions for ’Energy Perception (Primary)’. Do you confirm the consumption of 50,000,000 popularity points for the exchange?]

Fifty million points! This was a huge chunk of his currently available points. But Alex did not hesitate. Abilities were tools, amulets, and more importantly, keys to exploring the unknown and controlling his own destiny. Especially after perceiving the possible existence of hidden attention beyond commercial competition, this investment was even more necessary.

”Confirm exchange.”

A familiar warm current surged through his body, but it was... ’lighter’ than when he had exchanged for constitution or perception-type abilities in the past. It was as if some internal receiving organ had been quietly opened and calibrated. There were no direct changes to his sight, hearing, or touch, but his ’feeling’ of the surrounding environment gained an indescribable dimension. He could faintly detect the weak electromagnetic fields emitted by running appliances in the office, feel the steady flow of energy from the distant server racks, and even ’touch’ the extremely low-frequency background ’noise’ from the city’s power grid permeating the air.

This perception was still very blurred, like looking at the world through frosted glass. But indeed, he ’saw’ things he couldn’t see before.

He again pressed his hands against the silver case. This time, the perception was much clearer. He could ’see’ inside the case, between the precision components, several wisps of extremely thin, rapidly dissipating pale blue ’light filaments’—those were the residual abnormal energy tracks, possessing a cold, non-living, yet highly ordered texture.

[Energy Perception (Primary)] activated. He had stepped into a new realm of perception.

System interface updated:

· Cumulative Historical popularity: 131,200,000 points

· Available popularity: 39,930,030 points (Consumed 50,000,000 points)

· New Ability: [Energy Perception (Primary)] - Allows passive perception of abnormal energy flows and residues in the surrounding environment (above intensity threshold), with blurred perception of conventional energy fields (electromagnetic, thermal radiation, etc.). Precision and range increase with proficiency and potential ability upgrades.

· Prompt: Successfully exchanged for a key perception-type transcendent ability. The protagonist’s ability to detect potential risks and acquire information has been significantly enhanced. The ’Management’ main line now has a more solid transcendent-side safeguard.

Alex took a deep breath and slowly withdrew his hands. Los Angeles outside the window was still brightly lit, but in his ’new vision,’ beneath the light and shadows of this city, there seemed to be more silently flowing lines and colors hidden.

”Spirit of the Wasteland”... what exactly are you looking for, or, what are you waking up?
