From American Internet Celebrity to God Among Men

146: Chapter 146 Soundscape DiaryOn the third floor of the Echo Vision headquarters, Alex had converted a storage room originally used for old equipment into a compact and professional VLOG studio and mini-recording booth. It lacked the grandeur of The Masked Singer stage and the solemnity of the negotiation room, featuring instead walls covered in acoustic foam, a dazzling array of instruments and effects pedals, several cameras with different focal lengths, and a shelf packed with all sorts of quirky recording devices—ranging from professional recording pens to modified vintage tape machines.

At this moment, a camera was pointed directly at Alex, who sat on a bar stool. He was wearing a comfortable light gray hoodie, his hair was a bit casual, and a steaming cup of coffee sat before him. The camera’s red light was on.

”...So, this is the starting point for the Los Angeles special of ’soundscape wanderer,’ my kitchen.” Alex smiled at the lens, his expression relaxed, looking like a completely different person from the one on stage or at the negotiation table. He picked up a handheld recorder, pressed the record button, and then turned on the coffee machine.

The low rumble of grinding beans, the hiss of hot water piercing through coffee grounds, the brief shriek of steam, the rhythmic dripping of liquid into the pot... these sounds, usually ignored in daily life, were amplified into a miniature symphony full of life’s texture under high-quality recording equipment and high-sensitivity microphones.

”Capturing sound sometimes isn’t about going to far-off places, but about ’lending’ your ears to the most ordinary things around you.” Alex recorded this sentence into the recorder as voiceover material. He switched the camera view to show the audio waveform editing in progress on the computer screen. He split the coffee machine’s sound into tracks, slightly lowered the sharp steam sound, emphasized the rhythm of the coffee dripping, and then layered in the crisp sound of himself lightly tapping the ceramic cup with his knuckles.

”Now, let’s give it a little ’heartbeat’.” He spoke to the camera, his fingers pressing a few simple chords on the MIDI keyboard, warm and soothing. He mixed the processed ambient sounds with the newly added simple melody, and an atmospheric music demo less than a minute long, carrying the warmth of early morning, was born.

The entire filming and production process was edited into a fifteen-minute VLOG titled ”Morning Coffee and Its Sound Story.” The video didn’t deliberately show off skills; the pace was slow, focusing on the process of ”discovery” and ”transformation.” At the end of the video, Alex said to the camera: ”For next week’s ’Wander,’ which corner of the city do you want to hear? The sound of turning pages in an old neighborhood bookstore? The echoes of a late-night subway station? Or the automatic doors of a convenience store on a rainy night? Let me know in the comments.”

The VLOG was released simultaneously on the official ”soundscape wanderer” channel on Flashpoint and his personal column on Voice of Truth. There was no large-scale promotion, relying only on channel subscriptions and natural platform recommendations.

The response, however, was unexpectedly enthusiastic.

Three hours after release, the view count surpassed one million, and the ratio of likes and bookmarks was incredibly high. The comment section was quickly occupied by messages like ”healing,” ”magical,” and ”it turns out there’s music in my life too.” Users actively nominated the next sound collection locations, and some even began uploading their own ”Life Soundscape Sketches” made in imitation.

Data feedback came in quickly: the average watch time reached an astonishing 13 minutes (almost the entire duration), and the video completion rate exceeded 70%. More importantly, the new user traffic guided by this VLOG to the ”soundscape wanderer” series playlist and related Voice of Truth columns showed a significant second wave of growth.

”This kind of ’companion-style creation’ content has extremely high stickiness,” Marcus summarized while analyzing the report. ”It lowers the mystery and threshold of music creation, enhancing the fans’ sense of participation and identity. Many users commented that after watching, they also wanted to try recording the sounds in their own lives.”

The system interface quietly updated:

[Cumulative Historical popularity] 127,200,000 points (Continuous output of high-quality content driving growth)

[Available popularity] 42,530,030 points

[New Prompt: Serialized, highly interactive original VLOG content has gained deep recognition, effectively strengthening the ’Life Artist’ and ’Followable Creator’ personas. Reward: Slightly increased the natural charisma of Emotional Resonance Field (Intermediate) in non-stage, small-scale real interaction scenarios.]

The reward once again fell into the field he was currently cultivating. This feeling of subtly improving his abilities through daily creation was solid and reassuring.

A few days later, Alex put VLOG creation aside temporarily and threw himself into writing a new song. This time it wasn’t for a show or a movie, but a private work born purely from his recent mood. It started when he was clearing out backlogged emails from the Spirit of the Wasteland incident and happened to click on a thank-you letter from the Sound of Echoes music healing space. Attached was a short melody recorded with simple notes by a participating teenager, clumsy yet sincere.

That melody circled in his mind and wouldn’t leave.

He locked himself in the recording studio without any preset style. He first used the piano to sketch out a few clean chords that carried a hint of melancholy but also embraced hope as a foundation. Then, he remembered the sense of freedom that transcended genre constraints when Spirit of the Wasteland performed ”Bohemian Rhapsody.” He didn’t imitate it, but rather drew from it a kind of courage to ”break the framework.”

He added non-traditional percussion tones—a sample of a rhythmic ”beep” sound processed through effects, like a distant heart monitor (from a fuzzy memory of a hospital visit), and the fine, fragmented sound produced by lightly brushing the edge of a cymbal with a wire brush, like wind blowing through a metal fence. For the vocals, he discarded flashy techniques and adopted a low murmur almost like speaking, with fragmented lyrics describing being broken, searching, and tiny glimmers of light.

The creation lasted until the early hours of the morning. When the final mix was completed, a song titled ”Whispers of a Glimmer” was born. It didn’t belong to any clear pop genre; it was atmospheric, the melody wasn’t catchy but was enduringly listenable, more like a diary written in music.

He didn’t release it immediately, but sent it to Taylor first.

An hour later, Taylor’s call came through. ”This song... is very personal.” Her voice came through the receiver, very quiet. ”It’s not like the stuff you usually put out to climb the charts. But there’s something in it that’s very real. That heartbeat-like sample is used brilliantly.”

”I wasn’t thinking about the charts.” Alex leaned back in his chair, looking at the sky outside that was not yet bright. ”I just felt I should make it. Maybe later it can be put into the Sound of Echoes space playlist, or... just let it stay on the hard drive.”

”Release it,” Taylor said suddenly. ”Use your personal account, no promotion, just post it. Nowadays, many people listen to music not to dance, but to find a corner for emotional resonance. This song is exactly such a corner.”

Alex thought about it and took the suggestion. He used his personal account to simultaneously upload ”Whispers of a Glimmer” on music platforms and Voice of Truth. There was no music video, no copy, only simple song information and a single line: ”A whisper, if there is a glimmer.”

The spread after release was slow and quiet. It didn’t rush onto the hot lists, but the comment section gradually accumulated some deep messages. Some said it was companionship during late-night overtime, some said it reminded them of a healing moment, and some simply liked that unique soundscape atmosphere. The play count grew steadily, and the retention rate (the proportion of users who listened to the end) was incredibly high.

This kind of ”non-blockbuster” but ”high resonance” work was also accumulating a calmer, more loyal influence for him. On the system interface, although the growth curve of popularity was flat, it was exceptionally stable.

A few days later, Alex took some simple equipment to the next ”Wander” location voted for by users—an old-fashioned record store in downtown Los Angeles that stayed open until two in the morning. He prepared to record a new episode of the VLOG, with the theme ”The Breathing of a Midnight Record Store.”

Walking through the store permeated with the scent of old paper, dust, and wood, his ears were filled with the blurred jazz music playing from a vinyl record player and the gentle rustling of the owner searching for records. Alex adjusted the angle of the microphone; Information Reception Filtering allowed him to more clearly isolate the charming layers of sound in the environment. He felt a pure joy belonging to a creator.

Just then, his phone vibrated in his pocket. It was an encrypted message from Rex, with only one sentence: ”The new variety show ’The Masked Singer’ being prepared by Summit Creative in conjunction with a certain satellite TV station has confirmed its core production team, which includes two external consultants who participated in the early format discussions for my ’The Masked Singer’. The show format has been tweaked, but the core reasoning logic is similar. It is expected to go online next quarter.”

Competition never went far; it just changed stages and times. After reading it, Alex put the phone back in his pocket with a calm expression. He looked up and nodded to the owner who was wiping an old record, signaling that filming could begin.

The camera’s red light came on. He faced the lens, revealing that relaxed smile belonging to a ”Life Artist” and ”influencer creator.”

”Hi, meeting again. Tonight, we are here to listen to how a city’s musical memory breathes while it sleeps...”

He would continue to create his VLOGs and music, manage his platforms, and consolidate his fans. Those commercial gambles and challenges were another parallel front. And at this moment, he only needed to immerse himself in the world of sound and be this charming ”mortal” superstar sharing inspiration with the camera.

The roads beneath his feet branched and intertwined, but he knew very well that each one required him to be down-to-earth and walk it step by step. And creation itself was the most solid step.
