First-Year Internship—And You Went to Site 749 to Contain Monsters?!

Hearing this, Yan Feifan scratched his head, sounding a little unsure.

”Uh… I can phase through walls.”

”Phase through walls?”

Lu Ding found it interesting. ”How did you awaken that ability?”

”Well, back when I was at home, I had a paranormal encounter. The wall… swallowed me. I panicked and just wanted to escape. I kept thinking about running away, and somehow, I phased right out. That’s how I awakened the ability to pass through walls.”

Yan Feifan explained while driving.

”If you can phase through walls, can you phase through the ground too?”

”I mean… yeah, I can. But I can’t swim, so if I go down, I’ll just sink.”

”Hahahahahaha!”

Lu Ding burst into laughter inside the car.Yan Feifan quickly added, ”I’m afraid of water! I almost drowned as a kid! But I’ll learn, I swear!”

”Alright, show me what you’ve got. And remember—learn how to swim. I’ll call you for the next mission.”

Lu Ding’s promise made Yan Feifan’s eyes light up.

Rather than looking for someone else, Lu Ding felt that Yan Feifan was a solid choice.

The guy was a bit timid but sharp. More importantly, people like him didn’t have too many opinions of their own—perfect for grunt work.

Plus, his wall-phasing and earth-phasing abilities might come in handy someday.

”Really, Brother Lu? I’m actually kind of useless. I can’t fight, I suck at reconnaissance, and I barely scraped through the assessment by exploiting loopholes.”

”That just means you’re smart. Besides, if you’re on a mission with me, do you really need to fight?”

”If you have to step in, then we’re both probably screwed already.”

Yan Feifan thought for a moment. That actually made a lot of sense.

Before long, the two arrived at a milk tea shop at a busy intersection.

Yan Feifan pointed out, ”Brother Lu, this is where Tong Yong worked a summer job.”

They got out of the Jeep, and Yan Feifan led the way inside.

The moment Lu Ding stepped into the shop, a faint, fishy stench hit his nose.

Ahead of him, Yan Feifan noticed that Tong Yong wasn’t there.

Taking the opportunity, he ordered two handmade lemon teas and casually asked, ”Hey, Miss, where’s that guy who used to work here? I remember him going all out making lemon tea last time. Why isn’t he here today? Seems unfair to leave all the heavy work to a girl like you.”

Now, this was how a smart person asked questions.

There weren’t many customers in the shop, and handmade lemon tea was a tiring task.

If he had asked directly, the girl might have been reluctant to answer—who knew what her relationship with Tong Yong was? But by framing it as a complaint, he created an opening.

As expected, the shop girl huffed, clearly annoyed.

”Oh, you mean Tong Yong? He quit. He was supposed to give a two-week notice, but yesterday, he just up and left! Now I’m stuck doing everything—making tea, handling orders—it’s exhausting!”

She vented her frustration by squeezing the lemons even harder, as if trying to crush all her grievances into them.

Yan Feifan smoothly followed up, ”Tch, that’s so inconsiderate. No sense of responsibility. And he had the nerve to leave a girl like you to handle all this alone? Here, let me buy you a drink to cheer you up—my treat.”

Before the girl could refuse, he had already paid for an extra cup of tea.

Hearing the register beep, the girl hesitated.

”That’s really not necessary… The shop has rules against accepting customer treats.”

”It’s fine, it’s just a cup of tea. Besides, a pretty girl like you probably gets free drinks all the time after work. That Tong Yong guy clearly didn’t know how to take advantage of being close to someone so lovely.”

Yan Feifan had a decent face, and he was saying all the right things at the right time.

The girl blushed.

With her guard down, she continued chatting.

”Yeah, right! He wasn’t interested in me at all. When he left yesterday, I happened to see him talking to a gorgeous woman. Not long after, a sports car picked him up. I thought we were just fellow part-timers, but turns out he’s some rich young master playing at working-class life.”

The lemon teas were ready, and the girl sneakily glanced at Lu Ding—then kept looking.

One of them was a smooth talker with delicate, good looks.

The other was a silent powerhouse, sharp-featured and effortlessly cool—his mere presence outshined any male model on TV.

She had half expected the charming one to ask for her number.

But instead, he turned around and focused on his phone.

Inside the car, Yan Feifan read from his phone.

”Brother Lu, I had the 749 Bureau’s mission support team check the traffic cameras for this area… and the car that picked up Tong Yong yesterday.”

At that moment, Lu Ding was 100% sure he had made the right call recruiting Yan Feifan as his assistant investigator.

This guy was just too damn efficient.

Lu Ding didn’t even need to ask—Yan Feifan anticipated his needs and handled them in advance.

This was the best kind of support.

”Did you find anything?” Lu Ding asked.

”Yep.”

Without needing further instruction, Yan Feifan reported his findings:

”The footage shows that yesterday morning, Tong Yong got into a black sports car. That car is registered under Ji Corporation.”

”Cross-referencing road surveillance data, the driver yesterday was Ji Corporation’s eldest daughter, Ji Feiyu.”

”On August 17th, the Sky-Eye System captured Ji Feiyu meeting Tong Yong in the Shanghuo Old Street.”

”Additional reports indicate that Ji Feiyu has a younger sister, Ji Yanshuang, who apparently encountered something supernatural. The hospital ran tests but found nothing abnormal. Later, they consulted a traditional Chinese doctor, who diagnosed Yang deficiency and prescribed herbal medicine.”

”And Shanghuo Market… is notorious for selling rare herbs, some of which are banned by the government.”

”And plenty of other illegal stuff.”

”Also, on August 18th, the day of the Xinghua Complex Massacre, Ji Feiyu bailed out Tong Yong when he was summoned as a suspect. He had an alibi, so the authorities let him go.”

Hearing all this, Lu Ding once again felt the terrifying power of the state.

It had only been a short while, yet they had already dug up everything—probably down to his ancestors’ birth records.

Meanwhile, Yan Feifan was getting even more excited.

”And get this—today, Ji Corporation’s chairman, Ji Hong, hired a genuine spirit practitioner to check on Ji Yanshuang.”

”Brother Lu, I have to say something, and I don’t know if I should say it.”

”Say it.” Lu Ding’s voice was calm.

”This Tong Yong guy is basically the protagonist of an urban supernatural novel.”

”If he really has Black Old Lady inside him, then the moment he met Ji Feiyu, he would have noticed something off about her.”

”And if we follow the usual cliché plot, Ji Feiyu probably got interested in him after he pointed it out.”

”Then, when Tong Yong got summoned, she bailed him out—which means she was already starting to trust him.”

”And now, she’s bringing in a real practitioner. But if Tong Yong intervenes, then compared to a regular spirit practitioner, Black Old Lady’s power is on a whole different level.”

”And if this were a novel…”

”This is the part where he gets to show off and humiliate the so-called expert.”
