Six Months Contract With The Mafia God

The virus samples were stored in a reinforced refrigeration unit that looked like it cost more than most people’s homes. Dr. Elizabeth entered her access code, and the unit hummed open, revealing dozens of sealed containers organized in a precise grid.

Each container was labeled with the viral strain designation and the date of collection.

Dimitri studied the setup carefully, committing every detail to memory. The location of the unit. The position relative to the structural support he’d identified in the schematic. The ventilation system that would carry the force of an explosion throughout the facility.

This was one of his primary targets.

”The samples must never leave this room,” Elizabeth said firmly. ”You’ll come in here to conduct your analysis, but everything you observe will be documented and removed from the secure lab. The samples themselves remain secured at all times.”

”Understood,” Dimitri said.

”Good.” Elizabeth locked the unit and led him back out. ”Come. Let me show you the specimen holding area.”

The elevator descended past the ground floor, past the first basement level, to the second basement level.

When the doors opened, the temperature dropped noticeably. The air smelled different here....a combination of industrial cleaning supplies, human waste, and something else. Something that smelled like sickness and fear.

The holding area was exactly as James had described it.

A corridor with cells on either side. Each cell was approximately eight feet by eight feet. Each one contained a person....or what remained of a person after twelve days of viral exposure.

They looked worse than Dimitri had anticipated.

Some were conscious, sitting on cots and staring at nothing. Others were unconscious, their bodies wracked with fever. He could hear the wet sounds of their breathing....pneumonia setting in as the virus attacked their respiratory systems.

By day fifteen, they would all be dead.

A technician in full hazmat gear was moving through the corridor, checking IV lines and documenting vital signs on a tablet. She didn’t look at the specimens as she worked. Just performed her tasks with mechanical efficiency.

”We have 287 active specimens,” Elizabeth said, as if she was discussing inventory in a warehouse. ”Of those, 264 have shown the expected viral progression. The remaining 23 are showing anomalies....either resistance to infection or accelerated deterioration. Those subjects are of particular interest to our research.”

Dimitri looked at her face, trying to understand how a human being could stand in a room full of dying people and speak about them with such clinical detachment.

And he realized: she was a true believer. She didn’t see these people as victims. She saw them as necessary sacrifices for the advancement of knowledge. In her mind, their deaths were serving a greater purpose.

That was, in some ways, more terrifying than if she’d been a sadist.

”How long have you been running this trial?” Dimitri asked.

”Fourteen days,” Elizabeth said. ”We’ll terminate all remaining specimens by day sixteen to prevent unnecessary suffering.”

Unnecessary suffering.

As if any of this could be considered ”necessary.”

Dimitri forced himself to maintain his expression of professional interest. Inside, something cold and merciless was calculating exactly where to place the bombs to ensure no one survived the collapse.

These specimens would die either way. But if he was going to kill them, he was going to make sure he killed the people responsible for their suffering at the same time.

”Fascinating,” he said, and meant it in a way that Elizabeth would never understand.

By the time Elizabeth showed him to his assigned quarters, it was 6 PM.

The dormitory was on the second floor of the facility, a small bedroom with a bathroom, a desk, and a window that looked out at the darkening forest surrounding the compound. The room was sparse but clean. Completely sterile.

”Dinner is served in the cafeteria from 6 to 8 PM,” Elizabeth explained. ”You’re welcome to eat whenever you choose. Breakfast is from 6 to 9 AM. Lunch from 12 to 1 PM. After dinner, you’re free to rest or review research materials in your quarters. Communications are restricted, there’s no phone signal here, and internet access is monitored and limited to work-related purposes. We prioritize research continuity and security.”

Translation: you’re completely isolated. You have no way to contact the outside world. You’re trapped here.

”Understood,” Dimitri said.

”I’ll see you tomorrow at 6 AM,” Elizabeth said. ”Be prepared to begin work immediately.”

She left him alone in the room.

Dimitri stood at the window and looked out at the forest. Somewhere beyond those trees was the outside world. Somewhere beyond those trees was Eve, waiting for him.

But first, he had work to do.

At 11 PM, when the facility had gone quiet and most of the staff was either sleeping or on night shift in the research areas, Dimitri moved.

He’d spent the evening memorizing the route to the mechanical room on the ground floor. He’d noted the camera placements, the guard rotation schedule, the pattern of the security checkpoints.

From inside his mattress, he withdrew the first device. It was smaller than he’d expected...about the size of a deck of cards, wrapped in dark plastic. Designed to look like a piece of equipment if anyone happened to find it. Powerful enough to bring down a structural support column.

He moved through the quiet hallways like a ghost.

Ground floor was nearly empty, just one security guard making rounds in the administrative wing. Dimitri moved in the opposite direction, toward the mechanical room entrance.

The door wasn’t locked. They never locked maintenance areas, no one was supposed to be suspicious of maintenance workers.

He entered the mechanical room and found the structural support he’d identified in the schematic. It was exactly where it should be....a massive steel column supporting the weight of the floors above.

Working quickly but carefully, Dimitri positioned the first device behind the column, using thermal tape to secure it to the steel. The placement was perfect, when detonated, it would shatter the column and cause cascading structural failure.

The first bomb was placed.

Fifteen more to position.
