Six Months Contract With The Mafia God

Claude’s fingers moved across the keyboard, pulling up additional data. The younger tech specialist’s face was tight with exhaustion, but his eyes were sharp.

”Location still unknown,” Claude said. ”James doesn’t have access to that level of operational planning. He’s classified as a test subject, not personnel. But the facility is operating under the assumption that Stage Four trials conclude on day fourteen.”

”Which means deployment happens immediately after,” Marco said, his voice flat. ”Day fourteen or fifteen. Maybe less if they’re ahead of schedule.”

Dimitri looked at the screens....at the facility layouts, at the personnel rosters, at the cold mathematical projections of what would happen if a bioweapon with a two-week silent incubation period was released into an urban population center.

Millions dead within a month. Possibly tens of millions if it spread internationally before detection.

”James has one more transmission window,” Thomas said. ”Day fourteen. Before expected field deployment. That’s when we’ll hopefully get deployment location and method.”

”And if he doesn’t survive to day fourteen?” Mike asked quietly.

The question hung in the air.

”Then we work with what we have,” Marco said. ”But James knows the stakes. He’ll transmit before he dies.”

Dimitri walked to the window. The city was waking below him, people starting their morning routines, completely unaware that a countdown clock was ticking somewhere in New Jersey.

Fourteen days.

His phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen.

Eve:Where did you go? Coffee’s cold.

He typed back quickly.

Dimitri:Office. Emergency meeting. Back by noon.

He didn’t wait for a response. Just pocketed the phone and turned back to the room.

”Talk to me about facility security,” Dimitri said. ”What are we facing?”

Marco pulled up schematics on the main monitor. The New Jersey facility layout appeared....a converted pharmaceutical manufacturing plant with heavy modifications.

”Military-grade security infrastructure,” Marco said. ”Perimeter fencing with motion sensors, camera coverage at every angle, biometric access controls, armed guards rotating in twelve-hour shifts. Minimum twenty personnel on-site at any given time....ten security, ten scientific staff. The facility is designed to keep people out and keep test subjects in.”

”Air ducts?” Mike asked.

”Filtered and monitored. No viable entry point,” Marco said.

”Delivery vehicles?”

”All vehicles are scanned on entry. Personnel are searched. No one gets in without multiple layers of verification.”

”Underground access?”

”Facility sits on concrete foundation. No tunnels, no sewers, no maintenance passages that bypass security checkpoints.”

Dimitri studied the layout. The facility was designed by someone who understood tactical infiltration....every potential weakness had been addressed, every angle covered.

”This isn’t amateur hour,” Mike said quietly. ”Whoever designed this security knew what they were doing.”

”Former military,” Marco agreed. ”Possibly former intelligence. The infrastructure suggests someone with operational experience in high-security environments.”

Thomas pulled up additional data.

”We’ve identified similar security patterns at the Pennsylvania facility and the two secondary sites,” Thomas said. ”Consistent design philosophy across all four locations. Which suggests The Covenant has a centralized security planner. Someone coordinating defensive measures across multiple installations.”

Dimitri processed the information. Four facilities. Each one designed to repel assault. Each one staffed with armed personnel and protected by military-grade security.

A direct assault would be costly. Loud. Public.

And if they hit one facility, the others would disappear before they could be neutralized.

”We need simultaneous strikes,” Mike said, reading Dimitri’s thoughts. ”Hit all four at once. No warning, no escape.”

”Which requires coordination we don’t have,” Marco said. ”Four teams, four locations, precise timing, zero communication lag. We’d need fifty soldiers minimum per facility. That’s two hundred trained operatives willing to assault bioweapon facilities without federal authorization.”

”We have the manpower,” Dimitri said.

”Not with that level of training,” Marco countered. ”Not for simultaneous operations requiring that level of precision. We’d need weeks to plan, not days.”

The room fell silent.

Dimitri looked at the screens. At James’s location marker, still transmitting from inside the New Jersey facility. At the viral progression timelines showing how quickly an outbreak would spread. At the countdown timer Claude had added to the corner of the display.

13 days, 17 hours, 22 minutes.

”There’s another option,” Dimitri said quietly.

Marco’s head came up. Mike’s eyes narrowed.

”We don’t assault the facility,” Dimitri continued. ”We infiltrate it.”

”James is already inside,” Thomas said.

”Not James,” Dimitri said. ”Me.”

The words dropped into the room like a detonation.

Mike stood up. ”No.”

”Listen to the plan before you....”

”No,” Mike repeated, his voice harder. ”Absolutely not.”

Dimitri looked at his best friend. At the man who’d stood beside him for fifteen years, who’d pulled him out of more fights than either of them could count, who’d watched him build an empire from nothing.

”Mike,” Dimitri said quietly.

”You’re not infiltrating a bioweapon facility,” Mike said. ”That’s not a plan. That’s suicide.”

”It’s the only plan that works.”

”Then we find another plan.”

”There is no other plan,” Dimitri said, his voice calm, measured. ”Look at the facility. Look at the security. A direct assault fails. Simultaneous strikes require resources and time we don’t have. But one man, one man with the right cover, the right credentials, the right motivation....could get inside.”

”And do what?” Marco asked. His expression was carefully neutral, but his eyes were calculating. ”Even if you get inside, you’re one man against twenty armed personnel in a facility designed to contain threats.”

”I’m not there to fight,” Dimitri said. ”I’m there to gather intelligence. To identify where the virus samples are stored. To map the facility’s vulnerabilities from the inside. And when the time comes...” He paused. ”....to destroy it from within.”

Mike was shaking his head. ”You’re talking about a suicide mission.”

”I’m talking about the mission that actually works,” Dimitri said. ”James got inside as a test subject. That door is closed now....they’ve filled their quota. But there’s another way in.”

He pulled up personnel files on the monitor. Scientists. Researchers. Administrative staff.

”The Covenant is recruiting,” Dimitri said. ”They need people with specific expertise. People willing to work outside legal boundaries. People motivated by money or ideology or desperation.”
