Six Months Contract With The Mafia God

On day four, the fever broke briefly and Dr. Chen injected him with Stage Two of the compound.

On day five, he started having violent nausea. His body rejected everything they attempted to feed him. The medical team inserted an IV line to provide hydration and nutrients.

On day six, something shifted.

The fever didn’t return. The nausea subsided. His immune system seemed to stabilize, adapting to the viral infection rather than being overwhelmed by it.

And through it all, James transmitted nothing. Couldn’t transmit. He was being monitored too closely. Every moment was observed.

But he was observing right back.

He’d memorized the schedule of the scientists. Understood their communication patterns. Realized that there were at least forty test subjects in the facility, scattered throughout observation rooms and medical bays.

He’d seen through the transparent wall when his door had been left open briefly, seen the corridor outside, seen the rooms across the way, seen other test subjects in various states of viral infection.

Some were much sicker than he was.

Some looked like they might not survive the fourteen days.

Dr. Chen entered his observation room for the first time since the initial injections.

”Your immune response has been remarkable,” she said, studying the monitoring data on her tablet. ”Completely unexpected, actually. You’re the first test subject to stabilize this quickly.”

”What happens now?” James asked, his voice hoarse from days of limited speech.

”Stage Three,” Dr. Chen said. ”We introduce a secondary viral component. This is designed to accelerate the infection process, to stress-test your immune system at a higher level.”

She approached with another syringe.

James watched as she injected the secondary compound into his IV line.

Within minutes, his body temperature began rising again.

But this time, the fever was accompanied by something else...a spreading inflammation that seemed to move through his bloodstream like fire.

James gritted his teeth, using every ounce of his military training to compartmentalize the pain, to separate his physical experience from his mental awareness.

He was observing everything. Recording everything. Even as his body was being systematically destroyed in the name of scientific advancement.

By day ten, James knew he was dying.

Not in the immediate sense....he wasn’t going to die in the next few hours or days. But his body was breaking down in ways that suggested The Covenant’s virus was doing exactly what they’d designed it to do.

Destroy human beings from the inside out.

His organs were beginning to fail. He could feel it in the way his breathing was becoming labored, in the way his vision was starting to blur at the edges, in the increasing disorientation that suggested his neurological system was being affected.

Dr. Chen came to see him every twelve hours now, marveling at his continued survival.

”Most test subjects are unconscious by day eight,” she’d said yesterday, almost with disappointment. ”You’re an outlier. Which is exactly why you were selected for the acceleration protocol.”

And now, on day ten, James understood the reality of his situation.

He was never getting out of this facility.

Not because they would kill him, but because if they let him go, he would carry knowledge of The Covenant’s operation. Of their capabilities. Of their timeline.

Which meant his ”release” would come in the form of a bullet in the back of the head.

And his only chance....his only possible legacy....was making sure that the intelligence he’d gathered was transmitted before they executed him.

The moment came when the guards changed shifts.

Twelve minutes of overlap where the outgoing shift was briefing the incoming shift. Twelve minutes where the monitoring stations would be understaffed.

James had been waiting for this window since he’d arrived.

He pulled out the molar, using a small pick he’d been hiding inside his gum....and positioned it carefully in his mouth.

Pressed his tongue against the activation point.

And held it there while the molar made its encrypted burst transmission.

Three seconds of data. All the information he’d gathered over the past eleven days. The layout of the facility. The number of test subjects. The names of the scientists. The viral compound specifications. The accelerated timeline.

And most importantly: The knowledge that The Covenant was moving up their field test deployment to two weeks from the initial infiltration.

Which meant the virus would be released in less than a month.

Not the month Dimitri had planned for. Not the month they’d built their entire operation around.

The transmission completed silently. Invisibly.

James replaced the molar in his tooth and lay back on his cot.

For the first time since entering the facility, he felt something like peace.

He’d done it. He’d gotten the information out. Dimitri would know. The team would know. And even if James died tomorrow....even if they executed him tomorrow, the intelligence would survive.

POV: MARCO

”We have a transmission,” Thomas said, his voice sharp with urgency.

The entire van went silent.

”Run it,” Marco ordered.

Thomas’s fingers flew over his keyboard. The encrypted burst was already being decrypted, translated, analyzed.

The data populated on screens across the van.

Facility layout. Personnel. Viral specifications.

And the timeline acceleration.

Marco’s blood went cold.

Two weeks, not four.

”Get this to Boss,” Marco said, his voice carefully controlled despite the adrenaline now flooding his system. ”Full priority. I want it in his hands within five minutes.”

”Already sending,” Thomas said.

Rodriguez watched the tracking monitor, the blinking dot that represented James Conley still stationary in the facility.

”He’s still in there,” Rodriguez said quietly. ”Still alive.”

”For now,” Marco said.

But he understood what this meant. Understood that James had just done what he’d been sent to do. Understood that they now had eleven days, maybe twelve if they were lucky....before The Covenant released a bioweapon on an unsuspecting population.

Eleven days to stop an international terrorism organization that had resources and reach beyond anything they’d anticipated.

Eleven days.

It wasn’t enough time.

But it was all they had.
