Six Months Contract With The Mafia God

POV: MARCO

The secondary office at Valentino Enterprises was exactly what it appeared to be, a legitimate workspace for corporate operations. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Manhattan. Mahogany furniture that cost more than most people’s homes. Multiple monitors displaying financial data and market analysis.

What it actually was: a command center for building false identities.

Marco had been awake for thirty-six hours.

The scotch in his hand was his fourth or maybe fifth, he’d stopped counting a long time ago and it was doing absolutely nothing to cut through the exhaustion that was starting to make his vision blur at the edges.

But he couldn’t stop.

Not when James was day eleven into a fourteen-day countdown. Not when Dimitri was about to walk into the most dangerous operation of his life. Not when the window to establish credentials was closing by the minute.

Claude was at one of the secondary monitors, his fingers moving across the keyboard. He had three energy drinks lined up beside him, each one emptied to the bottom, and a haunted expression that suggested he’d forgotten what sleep felt like.

Thomas was in the other corner, working on the dark web recruitment forums, monitoring the channels where The Covenant posted their recruitment notices, waiting for the moment they opened applications for virologists.

”Timeline?” Marco asked, his voice rough from not having slept.

”Thirty-seven hours,” Claude said without looking up from his screen. ”The Covenant typically posts recruitment notices on a Friday. Which means they’ll post this Friday. Which means we have approximately thirty-seven hours to make sure Dr. Aleksandr Volkov’s credentials are completely bulletproof.”

Dr. Aleksandr Volkov.

That was Dimitri’s new identity. A Russian-born virologist with expertise in infectious disease vectors and pharmaceutical development. A man who’d spent the last eight years working for a legitimate pharmaceutical facility that was conveniently closing down. A man with the exact skillset The Covenant was hunting for.

A man who didn’t actually exist.

”Status on the academic publications?” Marco asked.

”Forty-two so far,” Claude said. ”Published across dark web scientific journals, legitimate gray-market databases, and encrypted research forums. All under Volkov’s name. All showing progression toward exactly the kind of work The Covenant is conducting.”

He pulled up a list on the monitor....titles that made Marco’s skin crawl:

Viral Transmission Vector Optimization in Controlled Population Studies

Accelerated Incubation Period Manipulation: Ethical Implications and Practical Applications

Bioweapon Containment Protocols: A Comprehensive Review of Isolation Methodology

Host Immune System Suppression Through Viral Cascade: Case Studies from Unauthorized Research Facilities

Each paper was meticulously formatted. Each one included peer review comments—fake peer reviews from fake scientists who had their own fake credentials and their own fake publication histories.

It was lies built on lies built on lies, creating a structure so complex and so deeply embedded in digital records that it would take The Covenant’s vetting team weeks to uncover the deception.

Marco just hoped they didn’t have weeks, He hoped they were desperate enough to fast-track the hiring process.

”What about the employment history?” Marco asked.

”Finalized,” Claude said. He pulled up another file, a complete career history spanning fifteen years. Education records from Moscow State University, Post-doctoral fellowship at the Friedrich Loeffler Institute in Germany. Employment at Pha Laboratories.

Each position built on the previous one. Each one showing gradual progression toward more sensitive, more restricted, more ethically questionable research.

”The narrative is that Volkov became disillusioned with corporate pharmaceutical restrictions,” Claude explained, ”He wanted to conduct research without ethical oversight. He wanted freedom to explore viral manipulation without regulatory limitation. He attended underground scientific conferences....all documented through fake attendee lists, fake conference records, all embedded in dark web archives.”

He pulled up what looked like a conference program....The International Symposium on Unrestricted Pharmaceutical Development, complete with fake speaker bios, fake schedule, fake participant lists.

Dimitri’s fake name was listed as a speaker.

The title of his fake presentation: Liberation of Viral Research: Breaking Free from Institutional Constraints.

”That’s the hook,” Claude continued, his exhaustion making him philosophical in a disturbing way. ”The Covenant isn’t just looking for a virologist. They’re looking for a virologist who’s already thinking like them. Someone who’s already ideologically aligned with unrestricted research. Someone who’s already demonstrated willingness to work outside legal boundaries. Volkov’s entire fake history shows that progression.”

Marco studied the documentation. It was brilliant and terrifying at the same time, It was the kind of false identity that would take actual forensic investigation to uncover, the kind of investigation that took weeks, not hours.

”Database insertion?” Marco asked.

”That’s where it gets complicated,” Thomas said from his corner. He was scrolling through something on his screen, his expression grim. ”The Covenant’s recruitment infrastructure is more secure than we anticipated. They’re using military-grade encryption, isolated systems, multiple authentication layers.”

Marco felt something shift in his chest. ”How much more secure?”

”We can still get in,” Thomas said quickly. ”But it’s going to take finesse. We can’t just inject Volkov’s credentials into their system like we planned. We’d leave signatures. They’d detect the intrusion.”

”So what do we do?” Marco asked.

”We do it the long way,” Thomas said. He pulled up a technical schematic, The Covenant’s network architecture, depicted in glowing green lines and node connections. ”We don’t hack their system. We piggyback through their legitimate recruitment channels.”

Thomas explained the plan as it formed in real-time:

The Covenant recruits through multiple vectors. Official job posting boards. Dark web forums. Underground scientific networks. Most importantly, they recruit through existing employee referrals and through recommendations from trusted sources in the scientific community.

What if Aleksandr Volkov was referred by someone The Covenant already trusted?

”We identify someone with access to the recruitment infrastructure,” Thomas said, ”Someone who has legitimate reasons to recommend qualified candidates. Someone who can submit Volkov’s application through official channels without raising red flags.”

”Who?” Marco asked. ”Who has that kind of access?”

”Two possibilities,” Thomas said. ”First option: someone already working inside The Covenant who we can convince to refer Volkov. That gives us credibility through internal recommendation.”

”That takes time we don’t have,” Marco said. ”And it requires infiltrating their personnel.”

”Right,” Thomas agreed. ”So option two: someone outside The Covenant who has legitimate reason to recommend candidates. A recruiter. A hiring consultant. Someone who specializes in placing specialized pharmaceutical talent.”

Claude’s head came up. ”You’re talking about impersonating a legitimate recruiter.”
