Saffron!

Huang Wan’er was no ignorant white lotus; she was quite clear about many things.

Especially matters concerning the inner courtyard.

Although her Huang Family could not claim to be extraordinarily wealthy, her father had married wives from three different families; her mother was the second, especially cautious during her pregnancy with her.

She remembered her mother telling her to be extremely careful, fearing that the eldest would poison her, particularly avoiding contact with musk and saffron at all costs.

Saffron, an abortion pill, and now Nan Batian wants to use it to make cake for her?

In an instant, Huang Wan’er saw through Nan Batian’s sinister intentions, and at the same time, her heart pounded wildly, thump, thump...

At this moment, Nan Batian was squinting his eyes, continuously observing Huang Wan’er’s expression.

Huang Wan’er also knew that Nan Batian was testing her, or rather, he had prepared for both possibilities.

The first scenario: if Huang Wan’er was pregnant, she wouldn’t dare to eat the saffron cake; consuming it would certainly mean losing the child, and she would also face a severe punishment.

The second scenario: if Huang Wan’er was not pregnant, the saffron would be beneficial as a warm tonic for her body, and it would also dispel any suspicions he might have, killing two birds with one stone.

Nan Batian thought this and stared intently at Huang Wan’er.

Huang Wan’er’s mental fortitude was indeed good; despite the looming disaster, she still managed to stay relatively calm, with her mind quickly going over countermeasures.

And yet, from her appearance, one could hardly tell there was any major issue.

Du Juan had already broken into a sweat from anxiety, and at this moment, she quickly spoke up, ”Gang Leader, the lady’s appetite isn’t great today; she just had some fruit...”

Upon hearing this, Nan Batian turned his head to look at Du Juan, his gaze mild but with a dangerous signal; Du Juan was instantly frightened by this terrifying gaze, as if targeted by a predatory monster, and involuntarily stepped back two paces.

Nan Batian squinted as he looked at her, about to speak, when suddenly he heard Huang Wan’er’s voice: ”Du Juan, am I talking to the Gang Leader? Do you have a say in this? You’re really getting out of hand.”

”Go, bring the pastries that the Gang Leader brought over. I want to taste them properly!”

Huang Wan’er scolded Du Juan angrily; Du Juan looked at Huang Wan’er in shock, her face clearly showing struggle.

At this moment, Huang Wan’er smiled and took hold of Nan Batian’s sleeve, ”How could I let the Gang Leader’s kindness go to waste? Today I want to eat more; should I finish all that the Gang Leader has brought, would that be good?”

Nan Batian snapped back to attention, looking at Huang Wan’er with a skeptical expression, ”Madam really wants to eat?”

Huang Wan’er smiled, ”Of course, I am well aware of the Gang Leader’s kindness. Bring them over.”

”Ah, yes.”

Du Juan bit her lip, really not wanting to do this; she knew how much the lady cared about this child, how much she wanted to give birth to this child, but now, was she really going to eat these pastries made with saffron?

This was saffron, the abortion pill!

Du Juan’s hands trembled a bit as she brought over the plate of saffron cake.

The so-called saffron cake, similar in preparation to osmanthus cake, is made with flour and glutinous rice flour as the main ingredients, then sugar and saffron are added.

This saffron cake, clearly made with a heavy dose, was entirely red; one could tell that a generous amount of saffron was used.

And the pastry was beautifully made, the chef having cut it into the size of matchboxes, neatly arranged on the plate in three layers, topped with a date for decoration.

It had the appearance, fragrance, and taste, but in Huang Wan’er’s eyes, it was no different from a deadly and potent drug.

At this time, Nan Batian took the plate from Du Juan’s hands and promptly brought it before Huang Wan’er, ”Wan’er.”

Hmm?

Huang Wan’er looked at him.

Nan Batian said, ”Do you know what the servants outside are saying about you?”

Huang Wan’er replied, ”What are they saying?”

Nan Batian said, ”They’re saying it’s morning sickness, Wan’er; you aren’t pregnant, are you?”

Gulp!

Huang Wan’er’s heart skipped a beat, but still, she kept up a forced smile, ”Heh, Gang Leader, what nonsense are you talking about? How could I, I possibly be pregnant? You shouldn’t listen to other people’s malicious gossip.”

”Hmm, the one who spread the rumors has already been buried alive by me. Actually, what I want to say is...”

”Wan’er, you know me, my body won’t allow me to have children, so if you really are carrying someone else’s child, it’s fine, just tell me. If you let me know who the father is, I won’t harm you or the child.”

”Moreover, I would treat him as my own, and in the future, he would be my son, my legacy, all his.”

”So, Wan’er, do you understand?”

Nan Batian looked at Huang Wan’er very seriously, almost with a feeling of an earnest confession.

He couldn’t have children, but he was willing to treat this child as his own; he could leave Huang Wan’er unharmed, as long as he knew who the adulterer was and could just kill him.

It sounded like a very tempting proposition.

But Huang Wan’er knew of Nan Batian’s ruthlessness; his words couldn’t be entirely trusted.

And even if Nan Batian truly wanted her unborn child, she could never give it to him; she wouldn’t let her child call the man she hated the most ”father”!

Huang Wan’er’s face looked troubled as she looked at Nan Batian and said, ”Gang Leader, you don’t trust me?”

Nan Batian replied, ”No, I’m giving you another chance.”

”Speak up, and you won’t need to eat this saffron cake. You know, this saffron cake is harmless to ordinary people, but if a pregnant woman eats it, it could be dangerous.”

Huang Wan’er looked at Nan Batian, ”Gang Leader, I have devoted myself to Buddhism, and to think you would distrust me so. Isn’t it just a steamed cake made with saffron? I’ll eat it.”
