That Day When Suzuki-kun Wasn't the Mob-B!

Suzuki absolutely despised unpredictability.

He hated having things spiral out of his control. He desperately wished for his entire life to fit neatly within his meticulously calculated plans. It was the exact reason he had clawed his way into Tokyo University in his past life: so he could easily pass the exams, become a high-level civil servant, or other jobs, and secure a perfectly stable, painfully predictable existence.

Yet... he knew all too well that life was fundamentally unreasonable. No matter how competent you were, some things were just brutally unfair. Like family.

Suzuki had been an orphan. He had absolutely no one to rely on. At eighteen, the state legally considered him an adult and unceremoniously kicked him out of the orphanage without a single marketable skill, financial safety net, or resource.

Congratulations, you are an independent adult, society had told him.

But how could an eighteen-year-old truly be independent when every single aspect of survival in that country required money? Suzuki knew exactly how brutal life was for institutionalized children. To survive the meat grinder of society, he had forced himself to work twice as hard as everyone else while he was still in the system.

It was agonizing. It felt like his physical body was being continuously beaten down by the environment itself. Unlike a physical bully whose punches you could dodge, how do you fight poverty? How do you fight systemic apathy? It was an invisible enemy. Sometimes, no matter how hard he pushed himself—even when his very spirit felt like it was tearing apart—it still wasn’t enough.

He used to wonder, What is the point of working this hard? For a future family?

He hadn’t even found a partner, let alone known if his future children would be healthy and happy. Yet, he kept grinding because he knew one absolute truth: he refused to live a life of discomfort, despair, and nightmares.

He needed to be better. He needed more. He pushed himself until he almost shattered, completely burning out until he eventually woke up in this fantasy world. He had been gifted unique skills tailored exactly to his deepest desires: stability, predictability, and absolute peace of mind.

He didn’t want to be a helpless victim anymore. He refused to just sit back, accept the pain, and let misfortune dictate the narrative. He had adapted, evolved, and climbed to the apex of power for one specific reason.

So he could beat the absolute shit out of the things he hated!

Like this exact, cruel fate where a good woman like Shizu was destined to die in agony!

”SUZUKI!!!!”

Everyone screamed in absolute horror as they watched Suzuki charge headfirst into the inferno, wrapping his arms tightly around the blinding, roaring core of Ifrit!

”WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!”

Anrietta shrieked in panic. She surged forward to grab him, completely willing to throw herself into the flames, but Rimuru instantly expanded his slime body, physically blocking her path.

”DON’T STOP HIM!” Rimuru yelled.

”Let me go! He’s going to die!”

”If you go in there, you will only be a burden to him! Watch him! He is adapting to the heat!” Rimuru shouted, forcing her back. ”Stay here! If you get hurt, he will get distracted and get hurt too!”

Rimuru understood something fundamental about his fellow Otherworlder. Yes, Suzuki presented himself as a calculating, unapologetic pervert. But beneath that armor, Suzuki possessed an incredibly heavy sense of responsibility. If he didn’t, why would an elite, beautiful elf like Anrietta be so utterly desperate to protect him?

More importantly, Suzuki was a coward when it came to pain. He would never throw himself into a blazing inferno unless he had an absolute, surefire plan to win!

”Aaaaa.....”

Anrietta’s legs gave out. She collapsed onto the scorched earth, tears streaming down her pale cheeks as she watched the man she loved burn.

”Suzuki...”

Rimuru had never expected the composed, lethal elven spymaster to break down like this. Seeing her raw devotion only fueled Rimuru’s desperate hope that Suzuki actually knew what he was doing.

You can’t die, Suzuki... you can’t, Rimuru prayed.

While Suzuki had successfully used his unique skill to adapt to the ambient heat, Shizu’s current state was entirely different. Ifrit was a High Spirit of Fire—a walking natural disaster capable of reducing an entire nation to ash. The only reason it hadn’t destroyed the continent yet was because Shizu had spent her entire life suppressing it, writhing in silent agony as it constantly tried to devour her soul.

Suppressing it clearly wasn’t a permanent solution. Suzuki knew he had to completely rewrite the rules of their existence.

Holding the burning girl tightly against his chest, Suzuki’s eyes glowed with an ethereal, absolute authority. He activated his ultimate conceptual skill: [Etymologist].

Instantly, the underlying code of reality appeared before his eyes like a complex legal document. He scanned the spiritual contract binding Shizu and Ifrit—the original, cruel summoning syntax written by Demon Lord Leon Cromwell decades ago.

[Vessel: Human (Degrading)] + [Action: Suppress] + [Inmate: High-Fire Spirit]

It was a straightforward, brutal equation. Shizu was a degrading vessel attempting to forcefully suppress a volatile inmate. Suzuki knew this dynamic was no longer sustainable.

Since it is impossible to negotiate with a mindless inferno, Suzuki thought coldly, I will just forcefully change the contract.

Usually, altering a spiritual contract required mutual consent and extensive negotiations between both parties, much like restructuring a corporate merger during an economic crisis. But Suzuki didn’t need to negotiate. He bypassed the boardroom entirely, directly editing the source code of reality.

Summoning an ethereal, glowing pen into his hand, Suzuki targeted the active verb dictating Ifrit’s current state.

He struck out [Combust] and overwrote it with [Suspend].

VWOOM.

The roaring, apocalyptic flames instantly froze in mid-air. The crackling heat died completely. Ifrit was paralyzed, trapped in a state of perfect, conceptual suspended animation, hovering helplessly over Shizu’s unconscious body.

”??”

The Great Spirit was completely bewildered, its consciousness frozen in a digital stasis.

But Suzuki couldn’t relax yet. While the immediate liability was frozen, he had to rewrite the fundamental laws governing their existence. He wasn’t going to separate them—extracting a core spirit from a mortal body would kill Shizu instantly. Instead, he was going to force them into a highly profitable, mutually beneficial structure.

How?

Currently, Ifrit was acting as a parasite, siphoning Shizu’s life force and giving back nothing but destruction.

Suzuki targeted the relationship syntax linking their souls: [Status: Parasitic Subjugation].

With a swift stroke of his pen, he deleted it and established a new parameter: [Status: Symbiotic Lease Agreement].

If Ifrit wanted to continue residing inside of Shizu’s soul, it was going to have to pay ”rent.” And that rent would be automatically paid via a continuous, passive stream of raw, purified spiritual life force directly into Shizu’s core.

Now, for the final clause, Suzuki thought, his brain physically burning from the computational load.

Shizu’s mortal body was collapsing from old age, while Ifrit was biologically immortal.

He targeted the biological syntax defining Shizu’s physical form: [State: Mortal Degradation].

He aggressively overwrote it with a new definition: [State: Spirit-Harmonized Integration].

Because the [Etymologist] commanded the absolute, undeniable truth of reality, the universe instantly obeyed. Shizu’s frail, human cells immediately aligned with Ifrit’s immortal, spiritual frequency. Her biological aging completely halted. The horrific burn marks searing her skin vanished without a trace. Without having to die or physically mutate, she had been conceptually redefined and evolved into a ”Majin”—a semi-spiritual lifeform.

Outside the inferno, everyone watched in absolute, breathless silence. They saw the hellish, towering flames simply blink out of existence. The terrifying pressure vanished. And in the center of the clearing, Shizu—who had just been screaming in the grip of death—was completely restored. In fact, she looked healthier and more vibrant than she had in decades.

”Contract finalized,” Suzuki whispered, striking a final period into the air.

This was the terrifying supremacy of the Etymologist. It dictated the truth of the world. If Suzuki wrote that a red apple was blue, the universe would alter its physical wavelengths to make it blue. He was the author of concepts.

But rewriting the fundamental laws of a human soul carried a massive cost. His brain felt like it was actively melting. His mana reserves were drained to absolute zero from forcing the universe to accept his edits.

”I... have returned...?”

Shizu slowly opened her eyes, staring blankly at the sky. She took a breath. Then another.

”I don’t feel... any pain anymore...” she whispered, her voice trembling with disbelief. The searing, agonizing fire that had tortured her organs for sixty years was entirely gone.

”Welcome back,” a tired, raspy voice said from above her.

Everything was quiet. The roaring flames were gone, replaced only by Suzuki’s exhausted, undeniably handsome, and incredibly warm smile.

Shizu didn’t understand what Suzuki had just done to her. But looking up at his soot-stained face, she knew with absolute certainty that she owed him her entire existence.

”...I am back,” she whispered, her voice cracking as overwhelming emotion finally broke through her stoic mask. Tears of pure relief spilled from her eyes.

Seeing her safe, Suzuki’s smile widened. Then, his eyes rolled back, and his consciousness completely gave out.

”Suzuki!” Shizu gasped, catching his collapsing weight as he slumped forward into her embrace.

Warm, Suzuki thought groggily, his face buried in the soft, comforting crook of her neck.

He wasn’t entirely sure what was happening anymore, but the pain was gone, the unpredictability was handled, and right now, he just really, really wanted to sleep.
