Naruto: Starting by Reading Minds in Naruto

Tōsei’s injured hand could support a bowl. It could not form a reliable seal sequence.

Tonbo examined scar tissue, joint range, chakra pathways, grip, sensation, and fatigue under medical supervision. The old wound had healed as well as it could without reconstruction. Forcing two-handed seals would produce compensation through the shoulder and risk further injury.

One-handed seals were possible for some techniques. They were not automatically easier. Compressing coordinated patterns into one hand demanded control, memory, and adaptation Tōsei had not practiced for years.

The assessment found useful strengths. Tōsei retained steady chakra extraction, good pain reporting, and patience built through restaurant work. His uninjured hand had adapted unusual dexterity. His weaknesses were reduced reserves, forgotten sequences, slower recovery, and a habit of hiding discomfort when grandchildren watched.

Tonbo made the last item an explicit stop condition. Pride was not a measurable reserve.

”I can try,” Tōsei said.

”After you hear the limits.”

They chose Transformation as the first target because Tōsei had once known it, the chakra cost was low, and failure could be observed without creating a dangerous effect. Tonbo refused to begin with a cleaning construct merely because chores had motivated the request.

The training site was a quiet mountain platform with a fall barrier and no cliff access. Tenyu and Maki practiced leaf concentration within Ayame’s marked zone. Their task was unrelated to Tōsei’s result and would end before fatigue.

The children chose leaves of similar size and immediately argued that wind favored one side. Ayame switched their positions halfway through and recorded drops rather than declaring a winner. Concentration practice measured personal control across conditions, not superiority based on one count.

Tōsei watched them and attempted to warm his injured hand. The movement produced no useful seal and increased tension. Tonbo stopped the warm-up, replacing it with shoulder and wrist motions approved by the medic. Tonbo explained Assisted Reconstruction.

Sensory Lattice would map Tōsei’s current motor and chakra responses through predefined categories. Guided Insight would present possible one-handed sequences. Tōsei’s own attempts would generate corrections. Tonbo would filter and return those corrections as prompts rather than insert finished skill.

”Will it feel like your knowledge?” Tōsei asked.

”It may feel easier to notice an option. The final association must be yours. Anything that disappears when the link ends does not count as learning.”

Tonbo also explained privacy. The lattice would not search memories unrelated to Transformation. Tōsei’s pain, frustration, and motor images would remain in the session log only as categories unless he chose to describe them. Family relationship did not expand consent.

Tōsei consented in writing and selected a stop signal he could perform with the uninjured hand. A medic observed remotely. Ayame controlled the barrier release. The twins were told not to touch either participant during activation.

Tonbo placed two fingers against Tōsei’s wrist and formed the long seal sequence. The lattice returned only four categories: finger position, muscle tension, chakra timing, and pain. Tōsei recalled the original two-handed Transformation sequence. Guided Insight presented three possible redistributions for the missing hand.

The first failed before chakra shaped.

Tōsei reported that the sequence felt complete until the moment of release. The lattice showed his chakra arriving before the final finger position stabilized. Tonbo returned the timing difference as a pulse rather than moving the finger through genjutsu. Correction had to remain recognizable as information.

The second produced pain at the scar. Tonbo stopped that route immediately and marked it prohibited.

The third formed an unstable Transformation around Tōsei’s shoulders and face. It collapsed after one second.

The selected appearance was a younger version of himself in an old shinobi vest. Tōsei had not chosen it deliberately. Familiar body memory supplied the image when the technique needed a target. He laughed, then became quiet at the glimpse of a career interrupted decades earlier.

Tonbo did not convert the emotion into motivation. They paused until Tōsei chose to continue. Tōsei laughed. ”I did it.”

”You began it. Now repeat without the link.”

He could not. The result revealed that Assisted Reconstruction had supplied too much structure. Tonbo reduced guidance and asked Tōsei to describe the sequence aloud before moving. Each verbal choice slowed the process enough for the association to remain identifiable.

The barrier recorded Tonbo’s input separately from Tōsei’s output. After each attempt, Tōsei predicted the error before seeing the record. Agreement improved over time. When prediction and record differed, they investigated instead of assuming the instrument or student was automatically correct.

On the fifth attempt, Tōsei formed the beginning without Tonbo presenting the route. On the seventh, the Transformation lasted three seconds after the lattice ended.

Tonbo’s headache arrived with a delay. Sweat ran beneath his collar. Processing another person’s motor feedback required distinguishing Tonbo’s expectation from Tōsei’s actual signal while preventing pain and fatigue from disappearing inside an average. He ended the session.

The medic confirmed no new damage, but both participants showed cognitive fatigue. Tōsei’s next-day plan changed from active seals to reviewing diagrams and rehearsing without chakra. Tonbo scheduled his own rest before any Sensory Lattice research.

Tōsei wanted one more attempt. Ayame used the agreed authority to refuse. Learning that depended upon an exhausted instructor and an aging student ignoring limits would not become a family achievement.

The twins completed their leaf exercise and asked whether Grandpa could wash every bowl now.

”No,” Tōsei said. ”I can become part of someone else for three seconds.”

Tonbo corrected him. ”You transformed your appearance. You did not become that person.” The wording mattered around identity techniques. A joke repeated often enough could lead children to misunderstand what Transformation changed and what it could not.

”Can you become Mom?”

”Not if I want to live through dinner.”

Ayame heard him. The humor did not erase the result. Assisted Reconstruction had helped recover a pathway without permanently implanting foreign experience. It also consumed too much of Tonbo’s attention for casual teaching and risked creating false confidence if temporary guidance resembled mastery.

Tonbo wrote three requirements for the next session: fewer categories, longer rest between attempts, and independent repetition before any progression. He also required Tōsei to practice chakra control on ordinary objects without seals.

Assisted Reconstruction received a provisional classification rather than a technique rank. It could support rehabilitation and specialized teaching, but the current form required Tonbo’s direct processing and risked dependence upon his interpretations. Independent review would need a second instructor, a subject outside the family, and a version capable of exposing which prompts came from whom.

”This is slower than I expected,” Tōsei said on the flight home.

”You asked to rebuild a profession after more than a decade.”

”I asked to wash dishes.”

”Then a cloth remains the efficient technique.”

Preparing late had not made Tōsei incapable. It had made safe progress narrower and more expensive. Tonbo’s new method could help, but it could not return years by pretending time had not passed.

At Ichiraku that evening, Tōsei washed bowls with the same adapted grip he had used before training. He showed the twins the three-second Transformation only after Ayame cleared him. They applauded. Then all three completed their assigned ten minutes without asking the new technique to make ordinary contribution disappear.

The cloth remained faster that night, and no one treated that as defeat. Progress had remained real.
