Naruto: Starting by Reading Minds in Naruto

Hiruzen listened from the corridor while Tonbo distinguished impossible from difficult. He had arrived to observe the public session, not announce himself. The students questioned, objected, and received answers that named both effort and institutional responsibility. Tonbo did not promise that every child could become Hokage or that confidence erased injury. Hiruzen found the honesty more reassuring than inspiration performed for his benefit. He left before the class noticed him.

Hiruzen had used the word destiny himself. Minato had seemed destined to lead, Orochimaru to surpass every teacher, Tsunade to inherit a founder’s strength, and Jiraiya to find a prophetic child. Each belief contained observation and desire. None had prevented grief, defection, or absence. A Hokage could call an outcome inevitable after failing to change it; that did not make the judgment neutral.

Rock Lee repeated the first steps Tonbo had given him: assessment, fundamentals, theory, first aid, tools, documentation, review. None sounded miraculous. Together they formed the first route an adult had described without using his current failure as the conclusion. Neji watched Lee write.

One exceptional jōnin did not change the Caged Bird seal. One review did not change clan law. A narrow route praised as possible could still exist only for people whose families permitted them to walk it. He raised his hand.

”What is destiny? Can it be changed?”

The classroom quieted. Iruka did not redirect the question even after noticing Neji’s fingers near his forehead protector. Tonbo considered the words rather than offering a slogan.

”People use destiny for different claims,” he said. ”Sometimes they mean a prediction. Sometimes an inherited condition. Sometimes a limit no known effort has crossed. Sometimes they mean an order created by people and defended as though nature wrote it. Those are not the same thing.”

Tonbo wrote the four claims on the board. Under prediction, he placed weather and enemy estimates. Under inheritance, he placed chakra affinity and physical traits. Under unknown limit, he placed death and techniques no one had yet solved. Under enforced order, he placed mission law, rank, and clan rule. The same word hid problems requiring different evidence.

”If the result is the same, the name does not matter.”

”It matters because the response changes. A cliff requires equipment or another route. A prediction requires evidence and uncertainty. A law can be challenged by people with authority. A seal requires technical knowledge, political change, or both.”

”And a dead person?” Neji asked.

The question changed the room. Tonbo did not know how much Neji had been told about Hizashi’s death, the Kumogakure demand, or the exchange between main and branch family. He knew enough not to treat it as philosophy.

”Death is a completed fact for the person who died,” he said. ”The causes, responsibility, memory, and systems that may repeat it remain open to action by the living. No answer I give makes the death acceptable.”

Neji’s jaw tightened. ”If someone is born to be used when the main family needs a body, effort changes nothing.”

”Effort may not change the decision in time. That is why responsibility cannot belong only to the person threatened by it.”

Neji’s expression hardened. Tonbo had acknowledged the seal without pretending it was private imagination.

”And if no one with authority chooses to change it?”

”Then telling the constrained person to work harder is dishonest. Effort may expand what you can do inside a system. It does not absolve the people maintaining the system.”

Several Hyūga students shifted. Tonbo did not disclose branch-family mechanisms or accuse Hiashi in a classroom. He also refused to erase what Neji already lived.

”Can you remove it?” Neji asked.

”Not safely, with what I know.”

Tonbo added that attempting removal without understanding could kill the bearer or activate the very protections being challenged. Research without consent would repeat the claim that branch-family bodies belonged to someone else. Technical curiosity did not authorize experimentation.

”Would you research it with consent?” Tenten asked.

”Only with independent medical review, protection from clan retaliation, clear ownership of results, and a realistic safety model. I do not currently possess all four.”

Neji had never heard an adult describe protection from the clan as part of technical work. The sentence felt dangerous because it admitted danger existed. The answer carried no hope disguised as certainty.

”Then it is destiny.”

”It is currently an enforced limit. Calling it destiny may describe how permanent it feels. It may also hide the people, knowledge, and choices that keep it permanent.”

Neji wanted to reject the distinction. His father remained dead. The seal remained. Main-family authority remained. A visiting jōnin’s careful vocabulary changed none of them.

”You say the future is not predetermined.”

”I say predictions are not commands. Constraints are real. Effort is unevenly rewarded. Chance exists. Other people act. You choose within conditions you did not choose, and your choices can alter some of those conditions for whoever comes next. I cannot prove more than that.”

A student asked whether that meant people were responsible for every failure. Tonbo said no. Someone could make the best available choice and still lose. Responsibility required examining knowledge, authority, alternatives, and foreseeable harm, not punishing the person nearest the outcome.

”If your teammate dies despite your plan, grief may tell you that any different step would have saved them,” he said. ”Analysis asks which different steps were actually available then, not which became obvious afterward.”

Kakashi’s warning against slogans returned to him. Tonbo kept the answer inside evidence even when evidence could not comfort anyone.

Lee raised his hand but lowered it before interrupting. His hope did not answer Neji’s life.

Tenten asked whether a person could prepare for a destiny predicted by someone else. Tonbo advised recording the exact prediction, who benefited from belief, what evidence could disprove it, and whether acting to avoid it might cause it. Intelligence procedure applied even when the claim sounded mystical.

”What if the prediction always comes true?”

”Then examine how precise it was and how many failed predictions were forgotten. If it survives that, treat it as information, not obedience.”

”Would you act against a prediction?” Lee asked.

”I would act toward the outcome I judged worth protecting. Sometimes that agrees with the prediction. Agreement does not prove the prediction commanded me.”

Neji heard the distinction and thought of people who called sacrifice a choice after constructing every alternative to be worse.

Neji looked at him through the Byakugan. Tonbo showed tension, uncertainty, and controlled attention. He did not show the confidence of someone who believed words had solved anything. That made the answer harder to dismiss.

Iruka ended the session on time. Students could submit follow-up questions privately. Lee stayed to request the promised assessment. Tenten copied the scholarship routes. Neji left without speaking to anyone.

Iruka asked Tonbo to remain. A question involving the Caged Bird seal created safeguarding obligations beyond a classroom discussion. They recorded what Neji had disclosed, limited access to staff responsible for his welfare, and did not summon the Hyūga main family before assessing whether notification could increase risk.

”We cannot treat a clan rule like an ordinary complaint,” Iruka said.

”We also cannot treat clan authority as the only source allowed to define the risk.”

They requested consultation from the Academy’s independent advocate. The action was small and procedural. It was more honest than telling Neji his future belonged entirely to willpower.

On his desk remained one blank card. Before leaving, he turned it over and wrote a final question. *Who is responsible when a limit is made by people?* Tonbo found it after the room emptied.

Hiruzen received a copy through the advocate, not because he had listened in the corridor. The question placed responsibility near his office. Konoha had accepted Hyūga practices as internal clan affairs while relying upon branch members for missions and war. Noninterference was itself a political choice.

He ordered a legal review of what village protection applied to clan seals without announcing a reform no one had yet negotiated. Destiny would be a convenient reason to leave the issue untouched. He had no answer short enough for a classroom.
