Naruto: Starting by Reading Minds in Naruto

”Inuzuka Kiba wins,” Iruka announced.

Sasuke removed the last wire and studied the empty space where the Clones had stood. Kiba had used a basic Academy technique to defeat superior vision. The result did not weaken the Sharingan. It exposed the assumption Sasuke had built around it.

”Next time, that will not work.”

”Then I will need something else,” Kiba replied.

Girls who supported Sasuke complained. Students who preferred Kiba answered. Iruka ended the argument before a controlled match became a contest over who deserved admiration.

He required both boys to explain the decisive exchange. Sasuke identified line of sight as the exploited limit. Kiba identified the fire’s pressure upon his route. Each named one unsafe choice and one useful adaptation. The class received a tactical lesson instead of only a winner.

Kiba returned to Akamaru with more concern than pride. Sasuke learned visible movement after seeing it once and adapted to patterns faster each month. Scent gave Kiba information the Sharingan lacked, but information mattered only if he continued developing uses Sasuke had not already studied.

Akamaru climbed onto his head and barked.

”We are not losing next time either,” Kiba agreed.

Naruto confronted him beside the arena. ”You always take the best match. Fight me after class.”

”Finish the theory assignment first.”

”I train more than you think.”

Hinata spoke before fear stopped her. ”Naruto does train. I have seen him after class.”

Kiba did not accuse her of lying. He had tracked Naruto often enough to know the boy practiced taijutsu and repeated techniques with stubborn endurance. The problem was uneven effort.

”Then stop treating theory as if it does not count,” Kiba said. ”Hokage reads reports, laws, budgets, treaties, mission assessments, and enemy intelligence. Strength cannot answer a question you refuse to understand.”

Naruto’s face tightened. Clone Technique remained difficult no matter how often he practiced, and written lessons converted effort into failure where everyone could see it. Avoiding theory protected him from that feeling.

Iruka had begun testing different explanations rather than assigning the same page again. Naruto understood route maps when they used landmarks and learned ratios more quickly through shuriken groupings than abstract symbols. The accommodations did not excuse missing work. They changed how he reached the same knowledge.

”I made a new technique,” he said. ”It works even if my Clone doesn’t.”

”Good. Show it under instructor supervision. Then do the assignment.”

Kiba offered to review the combat sections if Naruto completed the reading questions first. Naruto suspected a trick. Hinata pointed out that accepting help did not make Kiba captain. The future rivals agreed to meet in the Academy library with Iruka aware of the plan.

Naruto had expected mockery and received a condition. He promised to defeat Kiba with the technique before remembering the theory pages remained due. Iruka called Shikamaru and Chōji for the next match. Shikamaru surrendered before entering.

”You still complete the tactical analysis,” Iruka said. ”If you decline the practical assessment without a health reason, it records as incomplete.”

Shikamaru complained that fighting Chōji would reveal nothing useful. Iruka offered a team scenario instead: both would extract a dummy while the instructors changed obstacles. Chōji accepted. Shikamaru sighed and began planning.

He placed Chōji on the route where strength mattered, used scattered pebbles to detect a moving wall, and negotiated one rule clarification before starting. The boy who surrendered to avoid pointless sparring became engaged when the problem required actual thought. Iruka recorded motivation as part of assessment without allowing Shikamaru to refuse every basic skill.

No genjutsu threat was required. On the Academy’s second floor, Tonbo watched another training group finish below.

A boy with thick brows and a short braid remained after dismissal to repeat basic kicks. His form lacked refinement, but he corrected one mistake at a time and counted every repetition. Tonbo recognized Rock Lee from Academy records and the question the boy had submitted for an upcoming lecture.

Lee’s record showed severe difficulty with Clone and Transformation, strong endurance, weak early scores, improving tool safety, and no formal medical conclusion that he would never use ninjutsu. Several comments called him untalented without naming the tested condition. Tonbo disliked the certainty of that language more than the low marks.

”He reminds me of you,” Tonbo told Guy.

Guy leaned through the window. ”His effort is admirable. His stance wastes force at the hip.”

”You noticed the second part before saying the first.”

”Admiration without useful guidance would be incomplete.”

Kakashi stood beside them with his hands in his pockets. He had joined pursuit analysis after the council and visited the Academy to compare Itachi’s old student records. Work had ended; Guy had turned the walk home into observation.

”Did you bring us here to recruit a student?” Kakashi asked.

”No. Lee still belongs to the Academy. Interest from a famous jōnin could distort instructor judgment.”

Guy accepted the boundary, though his eyes remained on Lee.

”If an instructor requests specialist observation, I will come,” Guy said. ”Until then, he deserves evaluation without being chosen because he resembles me.”

The restraint cost Guy something. He knew how much one teacher’s attention had changed his own life. He also knew that public attention could turn a child into proof of an adult’s philosophy before the child chose anything.

Tonbo teased Guy about the green training suit he was already imagining. Guy defended its mobility, durability, and visibility for rescue. Kakashi suggested visibility worked against stealth. Guy replied that youth required witnesses.

Their disagreement stayed dry and familiar. Tonbo did not turn marriage, children, or private relationships into a measure of adulthood. Kakashi and Guy carried different losses and different ways of living; neither owed him a family schedule.

”Then why are you here?” Kakashi asked again.

Tonbo showed the approved request. Fifth-year students would receive an open question session on shinobi work, study, specialization, and uncertainty. Iruka would supervise. Questions could be submitted anonymously, and Tonbo could decline anything classified or private.

”Public education as part of becoming visible?” Kakashi asked.

”Partly. Mostly I want to speak to students before rumor teaches them that one technique or bloodline answers every problem.”

Kakashi read the questions. One asked whether fate could be changed. He paused over it longer than the others.

”Do not answer that with a slogan,” he said.

”I cannot answer it with certainty.”

”That may be the useful part.”

Guy looked toward Lee. ”Tell them effort matters.”

”I will tell them what effort can and cannot replace.”

The answer pleased Guy more than an empty promise would have. Tonbo left to prepare examples. For once, public attention offered something worth using.

He asked Guy for permission before using his career as evidence and requested that Iruka verify every Academy requirement he planned to describe. A lecture about questioning claims could not rely upon unverified inspiration. Guy supplied his own school records instead of trusting Tonbo’s memory.

Tonbo also requested anonymous questions and a private follow-up route. A student might ask about family seals, disability, fear, or violence without wanting the class to know whose life produced the question. Iruka would remain present, and any disclosure of immediate harm would move from public discussion to safeguarding rather than become an interesting example.
