Naruto: Starting by Reading Minds in Naruto

Tonbo drew three columns on the board: qualification, specialization, and duty.

”The Academy tests Clone, Transformation, and Substitution because graduates need common tools,” he said. ”If you cannot perform one, the village must decide whether an accommodation, alternative demonstration, or more training can satisfy the same safety purpose. Pretending the standard does not exist would not help you.”

Lee nodded. He wanted a path, not a compliment that disappeared at examination time.

”Specialization begins after that question. Some shinobi build careers around genjutsu, medicine, barriers, tracking, weapons, intelligence, or taijutsu. They still understand other fields well enough to cooperate and defend themselves.”

Tonbo distinguished inability from refusal. A shinobi unable to form a Clone might deserve an alternative evaluation. A shinobi who refused to study escape, communication, or first aid because taijutsu felt sufficient endangered a team. Accommodation preserved the purpose of a standard; it did not erase every responsibility.

A student objected. ”Anyone who knows taijutsu can do what he does and still use ninjutsu.”

”Anyone can throw a punch. That does not mean everyone possesses equal speed, timing, endurance, anatomy, footwork, tactical judgment, or willingness to train the same motion for years. A generalist has more categories. A specialist may create depth the generalist cannot match.”

”So taijutsu is better?”

”No. Context decides.”

Tonbo named real constraints. A taijutsu specialist needed a way to cross range, recognize genjutsu, survive traps, protect teammates, and retreat from techniques he could not block. Injury could remove the one field upon which the specialist depended. Equipment, summons, formations, and allies expanded options without turning a weakness into shame.

”Excellent does not mean capable of every mission alone,” he said. ”No jōnin should be sent on every mission alone.”

He asked the class to design a four-person team around a taijutsu specialist. Students added a sensor, ranged attacker, medic, and barrier user until they exceeded the limit. They had to combine roles and decide which mission the team should decline. The exercise turned abstract disadvantage into composition and judgment.

Then he gave Konoha evidence.

Might Duy had remained a genin for years while developing the Eight Gates through relentless physical training. During the Third War, he opened all eight to protect his son and teammates from the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. The technique killed him. His achievement proved taijutsu could reach extraordinary power and proved that power without a survivable limit demanded a terrible cost.

Might Guy had inherited the method, advanced to jōnin, and built a broader career around taijutsu. He also studied theory, mission procedure, countermeasures, teamwork, summons, and enough ninjutsu to meet village standards. His green suit was optional. His discipline was not.

Guy had authorized the example and required Tonbo to mention Duy’s death. Celebrating the Eight Gates without its cost would teach students that sacrifice proved effort. Duy had chosen to protect lives in an extreme moment. The village’s responsibility was to create more routes that did not demand the Eighth Gate.

”He exists?” Lee asked.

”He was outside this classroom yesterday. Iruka can verify his rank and service record.”

Iruka confirmed both without claiming Guy never used ninjutsu. The evidence was stronger because it did not depend upon exaggeration.

Hope changed Lee’s posture. Tonbo interrupted before hope became a promise.

”Guy’s success does not guarantee yours. His body, teachers, opportunities, choices, and injuries belong to him. Your route must be evaluated by instructors who see your work, not by a jōnin visiting for one class.”

Tonbo also refused to make Guy the only possible model. Weapon specialists, scouts, couriers, investigators, and defensive shinobi could build excellence without resembling the strongest person in a story. Lee’s body and interests might lead somewhere neither Tonbo nor the Academy predicted.

Lee accepted that too.

”What should I do first?”

”Ask for a complete assessment of control rather than the conclusion that you are hopeless. Continue safe taijutsu fundamentals. Improve theory. Learn first aid and tool use. Record what fails and under what condition. If the Academy standard blocks graduation, request a documented review with alternatives tied to the standard’s purpose.”

Iruka committed to scheduling the assessment with a control specialist and medical observer. The result might still be that Lee could not meet current requirements. If so, the record would explain why and what alternatives had been considered. Failure would become information rather than identity.

This answer created work for the institution as well as the child. Iruka wrote every point.

Neji remained unconvinced. One exceptional jōnin among thousands did not make opportunity equal. Clan birth still decided techniques, protection, and the seal hidden beneath his forehead protector. He watched Lee’s hope and saw a narrow path presented as freedom.

Tonbo noticed the expression.

”Questioning the example is appropriate,” he told the class. ”Survivorship can mislead. If I show you one person who succeeded, ask how many attempted the route, what help the survivor received, and what harm the story omits.”

Lee’s excitement dimmed but did not vanish.

”Then why tell me?”

”Because impossible and difficult are different claims. Evidence defeats the first. Planning responds to the second.”

Neji raised a quiet objection. ”Evidence that one person escaped a limit does not change the limit for everyone else.”

”Correct,” Tonbo said. ”It changes the claim from no one can to not everyone can. Policy, teachers, resources, and individual work decide how many paths exist between those statements.”

Neji had expected contradiction and received agreement. He disliked how the second sentence moved responsibility from fate toward people with power.

The distinction settled over the room.

Tenten raised her hand next. ”I want to become a kunoichi like Tsunade. What should I study?”

Tonbo asked what part of Tsunade she admired: medical skill, physical strength, leadership, survival, or reputation. Tenten said strength and the ability to protect others.

”Then begin with chakra control, anatomy, conditioning, first aid, and a weapon system you can maintain under pressure. Seek instructors who will measure progress rather than compare you only with boys. If you later choose medical training, precision comes before power.”

Tenten asked whether not belonging to a famous clan would block access. Tonbo acknowledged that clans provided techniques, equipment, and teachers others lacked. The Academy and village archives existed partly to reduce that gap, though they did not erase it. He gave her the application routes for tool scholarships and medical prerequisites.

He did not promise she would surpass a dead Hokage or a Sannin merely by believing. He gave her the next verifiable steps.

Lee wrote them down too.

Excellent shinobi were not miracles placed beyond analysis. They were people whose constraints, effort, support, judgment, and opportunity met long enough to produce reliable action.

That reliability still required rest, medical care, honest assessment, and teammates willing to stop a specialist from turning determination into preventable injury. That definition left room for hope without requiring anyone to lie.

Lee believed him.
