It was the exact kind of miraculous thing that happens completely outside the normal, predictable mechanisms of studio industry, PR reputation, and corporate marketing. It was a film that simply found its way into the absolute center of human culture through the sheer, undeniable weight of what it actually was.

The box office numbers told only part of the staggering story.

The domestic gross had just smashed past five hundred and fifty million dollars. The worldwide total was rapidly approaching 1.1 billion dollars, with the daily trajectory somehow still climbing upward.

Marvin’s infamous, arrogant December press-conference prediction of six hundred million domestic and 1.6 billion worldwide—the precise prophecy that had been met with vicious industry laughter, cynical media mockery, and outright hostility—was no longer looking like the hallucination of a delusional child. It was looking, terrifyingly, like a highly conservative estimate.

But the sheer volume of cash was only the cold, commercial surface of something vastly larger. The deeper, truer reality was the specific, intimate quality of *Titanic’s* cultural penetration. It was the terrifying way it had moved through the global population not merely as cheap entertainment to be consumed with popcorn, but as a profound, shared emotional experience to be processed in the dark.

It was the way human beings had compulsively returned to it multiple times in theaters, sobbing every single time, and then immediately pre-ordered it on home video. They discussed it at dinner tables, argued about it in offices, cried at it in the privacy of their cars, and carried their private responses to it long after the credits rolled.

American soft power at its finest.

The fourteen Oscar nominations were simply the Academy’s formal, surrendered acknowledgment of what the entire planet had already definitively decided: that *Titanic* was the undisputed film of the year, possibly the film of the decade, and that the evening of March 23rd would be its official, televised coronation.

Marvin’s name appeared in two of those fourteen historic nominations—**Best Original Dramatic Score**, alongside James Horner, and **Best Original Song**, for *’My Heart Will Go On.’* He had personally composed both the score’s haunting, unforgettable Celtic identity, and the titanic vocal song that had somehow become the year’s most inescapable, omnipresent piece of popular music.

He had flawlessly written the sweeping melody, the complex arrangement, the devastating lyrics, and the entire acoustic instrumental framework. He had sung the actual song in the cold recording session that became the definitive, cinematic version.

He had generously given James Horner the public latitude to present the massive orchestral score as a deeply collaborative work. And he had understood, with the patience of a creature that had always been vastly more interested in actual, undeniable outcomes than in cheap, immediate credit, that the arrangement flawlessly served his purposes far beyond the immediate media cycle.

---

On the evening of March 23rd, Marvin was sitting silently in the back of the limousine as it glided through the gridlocked Los Angeles traffic toward the Shrine. He was thinking about the upcoming performance..

The Academy producers had officially, confirmed three weeks ago that Marvin would physically perform *’My Heart Will Go On’* live during the middle of the telecast. It was a massive decision that had required—exactly as Marvin’s mind had predicted it would require—significant logistical negotiation.

The Oscars were a massive, live global broadcast. The designated musical performance slot was prime, billion-dollar ceremony real estate. And a twelve-year-old boy performing entirely alone on the massive Oscar stage—with no backing orchestra, no additional background vocalists, no pyrotechnics, just a single grand piano and his raw voice—was not a format that the Academy’s panicked production team had ever encountered before.

Their immediate initial instinct had been to completely surround his performance with the conventional, massive orchestral infrastructure that Oscar musical performances traditionally, safely employed to hide any vocal flaws.

Marvin had flatly declined the orchestra.

The tense, closed-door corporate conversation about this specific declination had lasted approximately forty-five minutes in a Beverly Hills boardroom. It had involved the Academy’s frantic music director, Grant and Linda Meyers, his assistant Amy, his sweating agent Jeff, and at one point, a brief, appearance from the telecast’s executive producer, who had marched into the room specifically to understand exactly why this twelve-year-old child was being so incredibly difficult about a simple string section.

”The song,” Marvin had said from the head of the conference table, speaking with the cold patience of a professor explaining something he has already worked through to terrified students who are barely encountering it for the very first time, ”in the actual film, appears over a very quiet, deeply intimate sequence. It is fundamentally a song about the terrible persistence of love immediately after catastrophic, watery loss. It is not, despite what the heavy pop arrangement on the radio album suggests, a massive stadium anthem.”

The executive producer had stared at him, completely thrown off balance by the boy’s chilling authority.

”The orchestral arrangement works perfectly for the album and the radio context because those daily contexts are naturally insulated from the film’s specific, devastating emotional weight,” Marvin had continued smoothly. ”But the Oscar performance that night will occur in a room full of six thousand people who have intimately seen the film, and who have cried at it. The song needs to land differently in that room than it does anywhere else on earth. A loud orchestra will inevitably produce a different, cheaper kind of landing.”

”What exactly kind of landing do you want, kid?” the music director had asked, his voice tight with frustration.

”The kind that makes everyone in the room cry,” Marvin had stated flatly, with the sociopathic directness of an engineer stating a basic technical objective. ”Without any musical warning. Before their brains have consciously decided to.”

A pause had filled the boardroom.

”Just a piano, and absolutely no pianist?” the music director had asked, rubbing his temples.

”Just a piano,” Marvin had confirmed, his blue eyes flashing with power. ”And my voice. That is sufficient.”

He had been entirely right that this was sufficient. He knew he was right. The impending performance had been designed for this specific space, and this cynical Hollywood audience, with the exact same care that he applied to everything. He had calculated the specific harmonic choices, the breathing pacing, and the weaponized deployment of the Hypnotic Voice and combined it with Hypnotic Music.

He had calibrated the magic at a massive level specifically designed to encompass a room of six thousand hardened industry professionals and a live broadcast audience of one billion humans, rather than the three or four people who had been in the small recording sessions, or the twenty who had been in the private studio screenings.

Massive scale required massive calibration. He had calibrated flawlessly.

He looked closely in the tinted window mirror of the limousine. He looked, exactly, like himself. Which was always the ultimate goal.

The sprawling red carpet outside the Shrine Auditorium on Oscar evening was a different, vastly more intimidating entity from the Golden Globe carpet and the freezing Grammy carpet.

It was not different in its basic, chaotic mechanics, which were largely similar, but in its atmospheric quality. The Oscars carried a historical weight that the other ceremonies openly acknowledged but simply did not fully possess. This was the ultimate room. This was where the American entertainment industry’s most formal, most permanent, and most consequential judgments were made. The massive carpet that preceded it possessed the thick texture of an event that inherently understood its own significance, and had organized itself accordingly.

The massive crowd outside the Shrine—the thousands of screaming fans who had gathered behind barricades, some of them camping out overnight just to catch a glimpse of the arrivals—possessed the electric energy of a Los Angeles celebrity crowd on Oscar evening. Which was to say, it was an enormous organized, borderline-hysterical crowd that had been standing there long enough to have developed a collective, boiling temperature, and was now expressing that temperature in response to each new limousine arrival.

Marvin’s armored SUV arrived at exactly five-forty with his parents. It was the correct, timing. The massive carpet was in full, blinding operation.

The network cameras were all up and running, the journalists were positioned, and the screaming crowd was at the absolute peak of its adrenaline energy, rather than the slow beginning or the exhausted end of it.

The black SUV rolled to a smooth stop. Gordon opened the door. Marvin stepped out onto the crimson carpet.

The crowd’s response was absolute, immediate, and terrifyingly.

It was absolutely not the generalized, polite enthusiasm that greeted most A-list arrivals. It was the deafening energy of absolute worship. In the brutal months since July, the global public’s awareness of Marvin Meyers had moved rapidly through several distinct psychological phases—from simple curiosity, to intense fascination, to the terrifying quality of deep, emotional attachment that multi-million record sales, three Grammy wins, two Golden Globe wins, and the inescapable *Titanic* phenomenon permanently represented.

The thousands of people gathered outside the Shrine had intense personal opinions about him. And those opinions expressed themselves in the deafening pitch of the crowd noise that the Incubus had learned, over the preceding time, to instantly distinguish from ordinary, cheap celebrity enthusiasm. This wasn’t just fandom; it was devotion.

He walked gracefully to the edge of the carpet. He stopped.

He looked out at the screaming crowd with the intense, magnetic quality of attention that he gave to any massive room of people—complete, unhurried, genuinely and present. The crowd’s response to this direct attention was entirely predictable, in the way that human responses to genuine, god-like attention are always predictably weak: the screaming instantly intensified, doubling in sheer volume, threatening to shatter glass.

He casually raised his hand in a slow, elegant wave. It was absolutely not performative; it was simply the natural gesture of an king calmly acknowledging a massive kingdom of people who had desperately come to be acknowledged by him.

The crowd’s sheer volume went somewhere that required absolutely no linguistic description beyond the word *deafening.*

His parents were walking beautifully beside him—Linda and Grant, both impeccably dressed.

The very first major press stop was the *E! News* platform, where the veteran interviewer—a woman who had been covering the Oscars for long enough to have developed a reliable, killer instinct for exactly what made the evening’s coverage distinctive—greeted them with the warm, relieved professionalism of someone who was genuinely, deeply pleased with the massive arrival she was currently working with.

”Marvin! Oh my goodness, you look absolutely incredible tonight,” she beamed, holding her microphone out. ”Midnight blue tuxedo—was that a deliberate fashion choice?”

”Absolutely everything I do is deliberate,” Marvin purred smoothly, his blue eyes capturing the lens. ”The only real question is always whether the deliberateness is visible to the naked eye. Tonight, I believe the answer is: not in a cheap way that calls desperate attention to itself.”

”The Shrine’s specific outdoor lighting,” she said immediately, catching his drift perfectly, her eyes widening in respect.

”Exactly,” Marvin smiled, his dimples flashing. ”It photographs fundamentally differently from the Beverly Hilton’s Golden Globes venue. Stark black fabric becomes incredibly flat and lifeless under this specific, harsh ultraviolet spectrum. Midnight blue, however, maintains its depth and its shadow.”

She looked at him in sheer, unadulterated shock. ”Wait... did you actually, personally research the technical lighting specifications for the Shrine Auditorium?”

”I rigorously research absolutely all relevant environmental details for historically significant occasions,” Marvin stated pleasantly, adjusting his cuffs. ”The precise color of a bespoke suit on a global broadcast is a relevant, million-dollar detail.”

”At twelve years old,” she laughed, shaking her head.

”Especially at twelve years old,” Marvin countered instantly, his voice dropping into a register of authority. ”When cynical adults in this industry are already looking for any excuse not to take you seriously, appearing incorrectly or sloppily dressed is a massive gift to them that I vastly prefer not to provide.”

Loud, appreciative laughter erupted from the hardened E! camera crew behind her.

The interviewer smiled widely, completely charmed. ”You have two massive, historic nominations tonight, Marvin.”

”I have exactly two nominations formally in my name, yes,” Marvin corrected gently. ”The Best Original Dramatic Score nomination is heavily shared with the brilliant James Horner. The Best Original Song nomination is entirely mine.” A pause. ”James wrote an extraordinary, sweeping orchestral score. The Celtic vocal and instrumental contribution I made was significant, yes, but it was made entirely in the service of his grand vision. I am completely comfortable with the distinction.”

”That is a remarkably mature way to frame it, Marvin.”

”It is simply the accurate, way to frame it,” Marvin smiled. ”Maturity and accuracy actually coincide more often than people in this town usually credit.”

”Okay, the million-dollar question,” the reporter leaned in, lowering her voice conspiratorially. ”Are you nervous about the massive solo performance tonight? The entire world is watching.”

He looked at her with the perfectly still, chillingly composed quality that was his mode when a question had a very simple, honest answer.

”No,” Marvin purred softly.

”Just... no?” she asked, blinking.

”The performance is exactly what it is,” Marvin explained calmly, the Incubus magic radiating through the microphone. ”I have meticulously prepared for it. The preparation is one hundred percent complete. Being nervous about it right now would be exactly like being nervous about yesterday’s weather—the outcome is already permanently determined by things that have already happened. There is nothing productive to be found in human nervousness.”

He paused, a dark, impossibly handsome smirk touching his lips. ”However... I am deeply curious about the massive room’s physical response. That is fundamentally different from being nervous.”

”What exactly do you think the room’s response will be?”

A slight, heavy pause. The precise, theatrical one.

”I think,” Marvin whispered, his voice vibrating with ancient power, ”that the Shrine Auditorium is going to be very, very quiet in a way, for exactly forty-five seconds after I strike the final key.”
