Meyers has created another mythic milestone in music history. He took James Horner’s beautiful foundation and transformed it into a cultural atom bomb. With *Marvin 1* poised to sweep the Annual Grammy Awards across all major categories, ’My Heart Will Go On’ cements his legacy as the greatest musical talent of the 20th century just after Michael. We look forward to hearing whatever this impossible boy creates next.”

The *Los Angeles Times* music section—kept entirely distinct from its vicious film criticism page—had published a glowing, feature-length piece that morning under the headline: **THE CHILD WHO KEEPS WINNING: MARVIN MEYERS AND THE TITANIC SCORE:**

> ”It would be reductive to describe Marvin Meyers simply as a prodigy, though the word technically applies. At twelve years old, the composer, multi-instrumentalist, and now Billboard chart phenomenon has accomplished what most serious, classically trained musicians do not accomplish in full, decades-long careers.

> Now, with his contribution to James Horner’s *Titanic* score—specifically his performance of the Celtic tin whistle and pan flute motifs that thread through the film’s emotional core, and his total instrumental dominance over the arrangement that became *My Heart Will Go On*—Meyers has accomplished something rarer still: he has made himself the undeniable, beating heart of a project larger than himself. He has operated in a medium he had not previously walked, at a level of breathtaking craft that the project’s principal composer has publicly called ’irreplaceable.’

> James Horner, speaking exclusively to this publication last week, was effusive in his praise: *’The Celtic element of the Titanic score needed something ethereal, something that couldn’t be synthesized in a computer or approximated by a session player. Marvin walked into the studio and understood exactly what I was trying to do before I had even finished explaining the emotional beat of the scene. He picked up the tin whistle and recorded the perfect take on the first try. That is not a common experience in thirty years of working with elite musicians.’*

> With Grammy nominations now a certainty—for Best Original Song, Best Original Score, and Best New Artist in Meyers’ individual capacity—and the Academy Awards campaign already generating unstoppable industry momentum, Marvin Meyers enters 1998 as the most discussed, most worshipped name in American music. The music industry, collectively, is running out of adequate superlatives to describe him. Marvin Meyers is what happens when a once-in-a-generation talent decides to not wait its turn.”

Marvin folded the pape and set it onto his curated pile.

He had won. The music was a triumph. But the film itself was currently standing on the razor’s edge of a financial apocalypse.

The opening day gross on Friday had been exactly 8.6 million dollars.

To the average citizen, 8.6 million dollars in a single day sounded like a massive fortune. But in the unforgiving mathematics of Hollywood blockbuster filmmaking, this number was a source of existential institutional anxiety. Both 20th Century Fox and Paramount Pictures had enough traumatizing experience to understand exactly what $8.6 million on an opening Friday implied about the total weekend gross.

It implied an opening weekend of roughly $28 million.

And that weekend total implied that the film was seemingly incapable of recovering its astronomical $200 million production cost, let alone the $100 million spent on global marketing. And the inability to recover those costs implied the immediate termination of the careers of every single studio executive who had authorized the bloated budget.

Alan Ryder Jr., the embattled CEO of 20th Century Fox, had called James Cameron late the previous evening.

The call, from, had not been a supportive, encouraging chat. The phrase *”Federal Bank building”* had apparently been deployed by Ryder. The phrase *”gentle way to die”* had apparently immediately followed it.

James Cameron, who had been operating under a crushing pressure that by all medical accounts would have been lethal in most human beings, had received this call in a state of mind that did not benefit from executive threats. The legendary director of *Titanic* was, at this very moment, in a condition that the polite industry press was describing with the diplomatic vagueness of ”under significant emotional strain,” and that less diplomatic, insider sources were describing in considerably more specific terms involving razor blades and cutlery.

Marvin set down his empty glass.

He considered the entire, chaotic situation with the clean cold practicality that the Incubus nature produced when human drama was stripped of its messy emotional context. He examined the board as a pure system of forces, psychological pressures, and probable outcomes.

The film was undeniably good. He had seen it. He had sat in a private screening back in October. He had watched the full three hours and fourteen minutes with the focused attention he gave anything he had contributed his magic to. And he had arrived at the following, assessment:

*Mr. Cameron has made a film that the current, critical apparatus does not have the adequate, emotional language for. And the current audience has not yet been shown the film in sufficient volume to generate the overwhelming word-of-mouth that will truly determine its actual, unstoppable trajectory.*

The critics were wrong.

They were not wrong in their individual, intellectual observations—many of which were technically accurate. The screenplay was not subtle. The dialogue was occasionally clunky. The love story was not a groundbreaking piece of original literature.

But they were catastrophically wrong in their conclusion.

Their conclusion required understanding that there is a specific category of film that operates entirely outside the normal mechanics of intellectual critical reception. It is a film that lands not in the brain, but in the body.

It taps into the primal fears of drowning, the desperate human yearning for true love, and the magnificent, tragic spectacle of hubris. It does something to human audiences in the aggregate that no individual, snarky reviewer’s intelligence can ever accurately predict or account for.

*Titanic* was exactly that category of film.

Marvin knew this the way he knew things—with certainty not just because of his future knowledge but also, his race that had spent countless centuries intimately observing human desire in all its pathetic, beautiful forms. He had learned to identify, with terrifying accuracy, the exact things that mortal human beings would collectively, irresistibly, and desperately reach for in the dark.

They wanted to cry. They wanted to feel the music tear their hearts out. They wanted the spectacle. The movie wouldn’t just make its money back; it was going to become a global religion.

Marvin smoothly stood up from the dining table. He walked over to the credenza and picked up the receiver of the estate’s secure telephone.

It was time to pull a genius back from the ledge.

---

The press conference had not been planned.

This was, from a certain strategic angle, its most effective quality.

Marvin appeared at the grand, palm-lined entrance of the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel at exactly eleven-thirty on the morning of December 21st. It was two days after *Titanic*’s opening day. The vicious reviews were still circulating, the industry discourse was still building into a panicked frenzy, and the collective, existential anxiety of 20th Century Fox regarding the film’s disastrous financial trajectory was at its most acute and publicly visible.

He was accompanied by Amy, who had spent the preceding forty-five minutes managing the complex logistics of an unscheduled press availability with the composed efficiency that had rapidly become her signature mode. He was accompanied by Gordon, his driver and bodyguard.

And he was accompanied by no one else. No publicist. No frantic studio executive.

The entertainment reporters who had originally gathered at the hotel—seven of them initially, twelve by the time Marvin had reached the arranged spot on the sun-drenched terrace, eighteen by the time he had finished speaking—were actually there for an entirely different story.

They had been staked out covering a mundane Hollywood Golden Globes breakfast event, and had redirected their camera crews the second word reached their pagers that the notoriously reclusive Marvin Meyers was about to make a live, unscripted statement regarding *Titanic*.

Marvin stepped up to the hastily assembled cluster of microphones.

He stood in the mild, golden December Los Angeles sunlight and simply let the frantic cameramen fight to find their positions. He looked out at the assembled press with the stillness that was his default register in public—composed, unhurried, and radiating a magnetic quality of presence that consistently produced, in adult observers, the deeply disorienting, humbling experience of completely forgetting that they were looking at a twelve-year-old boy.

”Mr. Meyers—” a reporter from *Variety* shouted, shoving a tape recorder forward.

”I will make a statement first,” Marvin purred. His velvety baritone wasn’t unkind. It was simply. ”Then, I will permit your questions.”

The frantic shouts that had been forming in seven different directions instantly subsided. The Incubus aura rolled over the terrace, commanding silence from the press corps.

”I have seen *Titanic*,” Marvin began, his hands resting elegantly in the pockets of his tailored trousers. ”I saw it in October, long before its release, in its complete, final form. I want to say clearly, and without a single microscopic qualification, that it is an extraordinary, monumental film.”

He let his eyes sweep across the reporters.

”James Cameron is undeniably one of the great cinematic architects of this generation—possibly of any generation,” Marvin declared, his voice ringing with authority. ”And *Titanic* is the fullest, most majestic expression of what his particular genius produces when it is given the necessary resources and the creative freedom that it requires.”

He paused. It was a precisely placed pause, the deliberate silence of a man who inherently understands that silence is a rhetorical weapon.

”The cynical reviews that have appeared in your publications over the last two mornings represent the honest, albeit flawed, responses of people encountering something massive that simply does not fit into their existing, narrow intellectual frameworks,” Marvin continued smoothly. ”That is entirely understandable. However, it does not make them right.”

A hand shot up immediately from the front row. Marvin acknowledged it with a graceful nod.

”Mr. Meyers, you’re eleven years old—” a reporter from the *Los Angeles Times* challenged, a distinct edge of condescension in his voice.

”Twelve,” Marvin corrected without a trace of defensiveness.

”—Twelve. Excuse me. What exactly makes you qualified to publicly assess the commercial trajectory of an over $200 million major studio release?”

Marvin looked at the reporter for a long moment. He utilized the quality of Incubus attention that had a unique way of making the person receiving it feel simultaneously seen, entirely stripped of their armor, and fundamentally recalibrated.

”The exact same thing that made me qualified to compose the musical soul for it,” Marvin purred softly, a dangerous, brilliant smirk touching his lips. ”An inherent, flawless understanding of what the work is actually doing to the human spirit, and what it was built for.”

He paused, letting the velvet threat hang in the air. ”You do not need to be a panicked studio executive with an MBA to understand when a piece of art is doing something historically significant. You simply need to have experienced it with honest attention, rather than a cynical agenda.”

Another hand shot up. He moved his gaze to it.

”You’ve been publicly critical of box office prediction models in the past—”

”I have been publicly skeptical of the specific way box office tracking is weaponized to preemptively judge a film’s artistic merit before the public has spoken,” Marvin corrected, his precision absolute. ”Those are two fundamentally different things.”

”Are you saying the critics are completely wrong about the movie sinking?”

”I am saying,” Marvin articulated carefully, selecting his words for maximum, devastating accuracy rather than cheap rhetorical effect, ”that *Titanic* operates in a primal, emotional register that conventional, snarky critical response simply isn’t designed to capture.”

He uncrossed his arms, stepping slightly closer to the microphones.

”The reviews that are dismissing it as a shallow love story are observing something technically real—the dialogue in the screenplay is not the film’s greatest achievement. But what they are missing is that the film’s true, devastating emotional power does not come from the spoken dialogue. It comes from the relentless accumulation of everything else.”

Marvin’s eyes burned with genuine passion.

”It comes from the terrifying spectacle. The historical weight. The crushing physical scale of what James Cameron has physically built. It comes from the chemistry of the actors, and the haunting, inescapable grip of the score. Those elements work on audiences in ways that are deeply difficult to articulate in a cynical newspaper review, but will be impossible for Hollywood to ignore once audiences actually start talking to each other.”

A brief, stunned silence washed over the terrace.

”Mr. Meyers,” a reporter from *The Hollywood Reporter* called out, sensing blood in the water. ”What is your actual prediction for the final box office?”

Marvin smiled. He had been waiting for this exact question. He had known it would come.

He had prepared his answer with the care of a predator who understands that a prediction made publicly is a massive, irrevocable bet placed with his own reputation as the currency. And he had calculated the astronomical odds with enough confidence to gladly accept the terms.

”The opening weekend will finish in the range of twenty-five to twenty-eight million dollars,” Marvin stated smoothly. ”Which, I am aware, will look deeply disappointing to studio executives and analysts expecting a traditional, front-loaded blockbuster opening to justify an over $200 million budget.”

He leaned closer to the microphones.

”They will be entirely wrong to be disappointed. Because *Titanic* is not a film that opens massively and drops fast. It is a film that builds. It is a slow, unstoppable tidal wave. Once word-of-mouth reaches a critical, cultural threshold—once enough people have sat in a dark theater and actually experienced what the film does to their nervous system in its final hour—the traditional box office trajectory will reverse. It will not drop next weekend. It will climb.”
