It was a solid number, but in the context of an over $200 million budget, it looked like a death rattle. Debuting alongside the explosive action of the new 007 film, *Tomorrow Never Dies*, the cinematic epic had entered an incredibly crowded holiday box office competing with established holdovers like *Scream 2*. While *Titanic* technically took the number one spot, it didn’t dominate the cultural conversation immediately.

And because of that $28.6 million figure, the mockery directed at Marvin grew deafeningly loud.

*”Marvin Meyers boldly predicts that Titanic will gross over $600 million in North America,”* a prominent financial columnist for the *LA Times* scoffed in his Monday morning editorial. *”Let us do some basic, elementary school math for the ’genius.’ If we take the opening weekend box office data of $28.6 million as our baseline, and assume a generous 30% drop next weekend—keeping in mind that most blockbusters drop by at least 40% to 50% after their debut—it would take the movie more than 120 continuous days of sold-out theaters to even approach that $600 million goal. Haha, that is undeniably the biggest Hollywood joke of the century.”*

The entertainment talk shows were just as vicious, spinning the narrative into a cautionary tale of childhood hubris.

*”I think it’s safe to say this movie has failed to meet its astronomical expectations,”* a blonde anchor on *Access Hollywood* sighed sympathetically. *”And unfortunately, although Marvin Meyers is a certified acting, writing and musical genius, he is still far too young to understand the brutal economics of this town. He made a complete fool of himself on those hotel steps. I think everyone in the industry can forgive him, though. He was just a child prodigy, and perhaps the massive fame of his Platinum EP simply went to his head. A harsh lesson learned.”*

Others took a more cynical, political angle.

*”The pristine, untouchable image of the gifted young composer Marvin Meyers has been greatly damaged by his bizarre, unprompted endorsement of Titanic and James Cameron,”* a ruthless critic wrote in *The Hollywood Reporter*. *”His actions are suspected of currying desperate favor with 20th Century Fox to secure future studio backing. It is a sloppy, transparent political play by his management team that has horribly backfired.”*

And the ultimate, inescapable punchline echoed across late-night television monologues: *”Titanic is destined to be permanently frozen in time; it will sink to the bottom of the Hollywood ocean just like that giant cruise ship. Only this time, there’s a very famous, very wealthy little passenger voluntarily going down on board named Marvin Meyers...”*

All those who relentlessly mocked the film, who calculated the 120-day theatrical run as an impossibility, seemed to have completely, unanimously overlooked one tiny, glaring fact from the press conference.

Marvin had explicitly stated that the film’s opening weekend box office would land between $25 and $30 million.

He had been flawless from day one.

But the terrifying truth soon came out.

On the first Monday after the opening weekend—a day affectionately known in the industry as the ”Monday Cliff,” where box office numbers traditionally plummet as adults return to work and children return to school—the tracking data came across the studio fax machines.

The executives at 20th Century Fox stared at the thermal paper, rubbing their eyes, completely unable to comprehend what they were looking at.

*Titanic*’s box office drop from Sunday to Monday was minimal. It was less than 10%.

It wasn’t just holding steady; it was devouring the market, making it the undisputed, top-grossing film of the day by a massive, staggering margin.

Countless film critics, cynical financial commentators, and rival studio heads completely fell silent. They had never, in the entire, century-long history of Hollywood cinema, seen a massive blockbuster film drop so little after its opening weekend. Even Steven Spielberg at the absolute height of his powers with *E.T.* or *Jurassic Park* couldn’t have commanded a Monday hold like that.

But the miracle was only just beginning.

On Tuesday, the daily box office drop for *Titanic* was still terrifyingly low compared to Monday. It fell by less than five percent. People were literally leaving their offices in the middle of the afternoon to sit in darkened theaters, desperate to hear the haunting music and experience the devastating emotional catharsis all over again.

On Wednesday, the decline remained virtually non-existent. The line graphs plotting the film’s financial trajectory didn’t look like a standard cinematic release; they looked like a flat, unstoppable heartbeat.

And then, the true, apocalyptic shockwave hit the industry.

When the second weekend finally arrived, the studio tracking algorithms completely shattered. The box office didn’t drop by the standard 40%. It didn’t drop by the optimistic 30% that the *LA Times* columnist had mocked.

It miraculously saw a slight *increase*.

*Titanic* grossed more money in its second weekend than it had in its highly anticipated first. Although the percentage increase was not massive, the unprecedented reality of a post-opening weekend surge completely paralyzed everyone in Hollywood.

This box office trend was so strange, so deeply anomalous, and so utterly defiant of every established economic law, that it was officially unprecedented in the entire history of global film.

Meanwhile, behind the scenes, the national theater chains were overjoyed.

While the studios were desperately trying to understand the math, the theater owners were popping champagne. Such an impossibly stable, flat box office trend over an extended period of weeks could bring them greater, compounding profits than those highly anticipated action films that experienced a massive surge in revenue in the first three days and then vanished.

As is well known in the economics of distribution, the revenue-sharing sliding scale for theaters favors the cinemas as time goes on. In the first two weeks of a blockbuster’s release, the major studios take 80% to 90% of the ticket sales.

But after a film has been in continuous theatrical release for more than a month, the percentage flips. By month three, the theaters are practically printing pure, unadulterated profit, keeping the lion’s share of the ticket price and no longer needing to share much money with the distributors.

*Titanic* was not just a movie anymore. It was an annuity.

And so, time passed day by day, week by week, and the daily box office of the *Titanic* remained incredibly stable. The massive cruise ship refused to sink.

The vicious mockery in the trades slowly died down. The arrogant doubts from the financial columnists gradually decreased, replaced first by bewildered backpedaling, and then, ultimately, by staggering awe, until the criticism disappeared completely.

In its place, a new, far more terrifying narrative began to quietly circulate through the highest, most exclusive power-dining rooms in Beverly Hills.

They weren’t just talking about James Cameron’s redemption. They were whispering about the twelve-year-old boy in Laurel Canyon. The boy who had stood on the steps of a hotel, looked directly into the cameras, and mapped out the exact financial trajectory of the greatest cinematic miracle in human history before it had even happened.

The Boy hadn’t just predicted the future. To the terrified, superstitious minds of Hollywood executives, it looked very much like he had actively commanded it.

The equity positions were held through 1998 and into 1999, as the Asian economies recovered with the combination of speed and unevenness that crisis recoveries always show. The Korean market turned in February 1998 as the IMF program stabilisation took hold and the first signs of current account recovery emerged. TSMC accelerated through 1998 as global semiconductor demand returned and the company’s foundry model proved its superior cost efficiency. Samsung’s DRAM division emerged from the crisis as one of three global players in a market whose consolidation had driven three of its previous competitors into restructuring or exit.

The Japanese positions took longer. Sony recovered through the PlayStation 2 development cycle and the music and entertainment synergies that the company’s management was, in late 1998, just beginning to articulate publicly. Toyota’s recovery was the most methodical and the most complete — driven not by a single product cycle but by the compounding of operational advantages that had been building for fifteen years and that the equity market had, for a period of eighteen months, entirely failed to price.

The year turned with the quality that years only ever turn when they are trailing something historically significant. It did not arrive with the clean, mythological slate of a fresh calendar page; it arrived burdened with the accumulated weight of everything that had detonated in the months prior. The momentum of 1997 insisted on shaping the cultural character of 1998.

January arrived in Los Angeles carrying several truths simultaneously.

Primarily, it carried the continued, increasingly trajectory of *Titanic*. The monolithic film had done exactly what Marvin Meyers had publicly predicted it would do on the steps of the Beverly Hills Hotel. And it was in the process of doing so in a way that produced a breathless quality of collective recalibration across the entire entertainment industry. It is a rare, humbling phenomenon when a thing unanimously declared impossible by seasoned experts is observed happening right in front of their eyes.

The film’s second weekend had not dropped. It climbed for the third weekend.

The global word-of-mouth had breached the critical threshold Marvin had identified in December. It was that magical tipping point at which enough human beings had sat in theaters, experienced the devastation of the film’s final hour, and walked out into the freezing evening air to immediately call everyone they knew. After that, the box office numbers simply moved in the direction that numbers only move when a film has transcended the medium of cinema. It had become a cultural event. A shared, global religion that people desperately felt they needed to participate in, terrified of being culturally excluded.

The December domestic gross had been approximately one hundred and twenty million dollars. The January projection was tracking significantly above that. The worldwide numbers were accumulating with a velocity that had caused the 20th Century Fox and Paramount accounting teams to reboot their mainframe models multiple times—simply because the output algorithms kept producing figures that seemed, in their magnitude, like systemic software errors.

They were not errors.

Marvin knew this intimately from the weekly reports that Amy assembled from publicly available box office data cross-referenced with the internal studio projections that found their way to his desk through shadows he preferred not to specify. He tracked the surging numbers with the focused attention of a man watching a prophecy fulfill itself. He tracked it not with the cheap, satisfied smugness of a child who had been proven right.

January also carried the seismic shockwaves of the Grammy nominations, which had been formally announced in the first week of the new year, producing the exact industry hysteria the music press had been breathlessly anticipating since October.

When the envelopes were opened, Marvin’s name exploded far beyond even the most arrogant, optimistic expectations:

* **Best New Artist**

* **Record of the Year**

* **Song of the Year**

* **Best Pop Vocal Album**

* **Best Male Pop Vocal Performance**

* **Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals**

Six nominations.

For a twelve-year-old boy who had released a single EP and happened to wander onto a 20th Century Fox scoring stage. He hadn’t just entered the industry; he had completely redefined the sonic architecture of a generation.

The elite music press responded with the enthusiasm of critics who had been predicting this outcome for months, now indulging in the intoxicating pleasure of seeing their prophecies confirmed. The mainstream press, however, responded with the less controlled, breathless enthusiasm of a public that was still—despite six continuous months of irrefutable evidence—completely mesmerized by the ongoing, impossible reality of Marvin Meyers.

But before the Grammys could hand him his golden gramophones, the Golden Globe nominations had arrived in the middle of December. They served as the first formal, institutional acknowledgment from the rigid Hollywood establishment that *Titanic* was not merely a commercial juggernaut, but an undisputed, awards-caliber masterpiece. It was the kind of validation that permanently changed the conversation in Beverly Hills dining rooms.

Eight nominations total for *Titanic*. Two of them carried Marvin’s name directly:

* **Best Original Song** — *’My Heart Will Go On.’* Marvin Meyers.

* **Best Original Score** — James Horner, with Marvin Meyers explicitly credited for the Celtic instrumentations and arrangement.

And, entirely separately, shocking the purists in the comedy and musical categories:

* **Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical** — For *The Parent Trap.*

The acting nomination had stunned many veteran pundits, but it surprised Marvin not at all. The Incubus had always intrinsically understood that the Academy and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association always responded to charm, provided that charm was deployed with sufficient, weaponized precision.

His performance had been an overwhelming, magnetic display of charm. The nomination was appropriate. He did not expect to win, and Marvin knew he would not win against established adult veterans this year, which was also appropriate. The category would be won by someone who needed it more, and Marvin was not in the business of collecting plastic trophies he had not fully, culturally earned yet.

But the *Titanic* musical nominations were a different, inevitable matter.

The Beverly Hilton Hotel on the evening of January 18th, 1998, was doing exactly what the Beverly Hilton did on Golden Globe evenings. It was actively conducting itself as the glittering epicenter of the specific, lavish theater that the Hollywood establishment performed annually for the benefit of itself and a billion television viewers.

The Globes were famously less rigid and formal than the Oscars, and consequently more revealing. It was the booze-soaked event at which the industry’s genuine, messy enthusiasms and judgments were far more likely to surface, primarily because the champagne demanded slightly less careful, corporate management of impression.

The red carpet officially opened at four-thirty.

Marvin’s limousine arrived at exactly four-forty-seven. It was a calculated arrival: not early enough to appear eager or desperate for press, but not late enough to be making an arrogant statement.

Inside the quiet, leather-scented cabin of the idling limousine, Grant Meyers reached across the seat and gently adjusted the lapel of his son’s tuxedo.
