Sacrificed To The Triplet Alpha Kings

Her expression was calm in the particular way of someone who’d delivered difficult news many times before and had learned how to do it without either coldness or false comfort.

”Miss Thorne? I’m Doctor Hensley. I’ve been with your mother since she arrived last night.”

Lilith wiped roughly at her face, trying to compose herself enough to ask the questions that mattered. ”What happened to her? i was told that her vitals spiked. Why?”

Doctor Hensley moved to the monitors, checking them with quick, practiced hands before turning back to face her properly. ”Your mother’s been in a deep coma for four months. That’s a long time for a body to sustain itself in that state, even with good care. What happened last night, we call it a crisis event. Sometimes it’s the brain attempting to reorganize itself as it works toward consciousness. Sometimes it’s simply cumulative strain finally surfacing. We can’t always tell which.”

”Could it happen again?” Lilith’s voice was smaller than she wanted it to be.

”It’s possible,” Doctor Hensley said, not softening the truth, but not delivering it unkindly either. ”We’re monitoring her more closely here than Shadowmere’s facilities allowed. If anything changes, we’ll respond faster than they could.” She paused, studying Lilith’s face for a moment. ”I know that’s not the reassurance you were hoping for. But I want to tell you something else, because I think it matters. A crisis event like this isn’t necessarily bad news. It can mean the brain is more active than we realized. It can mean she’s closer to the surface than we thought.”

Lilith looked down at her mother’s still face, searching for some flicker of that fight Doctor Hensley was describing, some sign of the battle happening somewhere beneath the surface where she couldn’t see it.

”She’s stable right now,” Doctor Hensley added. ”Vitals normal. We’ll keep her under close observation, but there’s no reason to think she’s in immediate danger tonight.”

She left a few minutes later, the door clicking softly shut behind her, and Lilith was alone with her mother again.

She stayed for hours. She told her mother about the estate, about her own room, about the garden with the hidden greenhouse, about Sera’s easy laughter and Agnes’s quiet kindness. She talked about small, unimportant things, filling the silence because the silence felt unbearable otherwise, because some part of her still believed, still needed to believe, that her mother could hear even a fraction of it.

”I miss you telling me I’m being dramatic,” she said at one point, thumb tracing slow circles over her mother’s knuckles. ”I miss you nagging me about eating enough. I’d give anything to hear you say something right now. Anything at all.”

The machines answered with their steady, indifferent rhythm.

It was a nurse, gentle but firm, who eventually told her visiting hours were ending. Lilith didn’t want to leave. She sat a moment longer, gathering herself, before pressing a soft kiss to her mother’s forehead.

”I’ll come back,” she said. ”Tomorrow if they’ll let me. I promise you Mama.”

Marcus was waiting exactly where he’d said he’d be. He didn’t ask how it went, he could probably read it plainly enough on her face, and simply helped her into the carriage before starting the drive back.

The return felt longer than the trip out, though the road was the same. Lilith stared out the window at the darkening forest and thought about her mother’s stillness, about the crisis event that might mean nothing or might mean everything, about the fact that she had no control over any of it no matter how many times she visited or how many hours she sat there talking into silence.

By the time they reached the estate, full night had fallen. Lilith stepped down from the carriage on legs that felt disconnected from the rest of her, and made her way inside without any clear sense of direction, just following the pull toward wherever the brothers happened to be.

She found them in one of the smaller sitting rooms on the second floor. All three looked up the moment she appeared in the doorway, and something in her face must have told them enough, because they were on their feet immediately.

”How is she?” Sebastian asked, already crossing the room toward her.

”Stable,” Lilith said. Her voice came out flat with exhaustion. ”The doctor said it might mean her brain is fighting harder to wake up. But she’s still....she’s still the same. Still asleep.”

Nicholas remained where he was, near the fireplace, his silver eyes taking in her state with careful assessment rather than open concern. ”Stable is not nothing,” he said evenly. ”That’s a fact worth holding onto tonight.”

It wasn’t warm, exactly. It wasn’t Sebastian’s gentleness or Lucian’s open worry. But there was a steadiness to it that Lilith found she needed more than she expected, someone stating a plain fact without trying to manage her emotions around it.

Her legs chose that moment to remind her how little strength she had left. She swayed slightly, and Lucian was there before she’d fully registered moving, his arms coming around her, holding her upright.

”You need to sleep,” he said quietly against her hair.

She didn’t argue. She let him lift her, let her head rest against his shoulder as he carried her from the room and down the corridor toward her own door. Behind them, she was only distantly aware of Nicholas and Sebastian remaining in the sitting room, their voices low, already discussing something she was too tired to try to make out.

Lucian set her down on the edge of her bed with a gentleness that didn’t match the restless, feral energy she usually sensed simmering beneath his surface. He helped her out of her outer dress, found her nightgown without being asked, and eased her into it with quiet efficiency before pulling the blankets up over her.

”Sleep,” he murmured, brushing a strand of hair away from her face. His hand lingered there a moment too long, his jaw tight, his gold eyes burning with something he was visibly working to contain. ”I’m just down the hall. Call if you need anything.”
