King of the Wilderness

Chapter 355: Chapter 217: Doing Scientific Research in the Wilderness? (Ten-Thousand-Word Combined Chapter)

This is a stress response to an unknown stimulus. Lin Yu’an’s heart tightened as well, and he even began to doubt whether he was doing the right thing.

But the idea of giving up flashed by in an instant; he couldn’t abandon it halfway due to December’s temporary discomfort, as that would only make it suffer more.

What he could do now was offer one hundred percent patience and comfort, speaking softly and gently to the little creature in his arms.

”There, there, it’s okay, December, relax... I know this feels strange, but trust me, this is good for you...”

He no longer thought about the GoPro lens or any scientific data; all his attention was focused on the little life in his arms that was resisting him.

”It will be over soon, see, just like this... we’re just doing a little cleaning...”

He continued this dual form of verbal and action comfort with patience. Time ticked by, second by second.

After about one or two minutes, a wonderful change occurred.

December seemed to finally realize he meant no harm, and the little body in his arms, originally stiff as a rock, began to slowly relax.

Its struggle lessened, and the sharp protesting cries turned into pitiful, intermittent whimpers.

It seemed it finally understood Lin Yu’an’s intention from this continuous rhythmic stimulation, or rather that its body’s instinctive response eventually overpowered its resistance.

Suddenly, Lin Yu’an felt the small creature in his arms tense slightly, letting out a long, relieved whimper, and then its entire body completely relaxed.

He looked down to see a clear liquid draw an arc and fall into the snow pit below, soaking a patch of dry spruce needles.

Soon after, some golden-yellow, uniformly textured paste excrement also came out smoothly.

Success!

An indescribable sense of achievement instantly swept away all of Lin Yu’an’s previous awkwardness. He had successfully replicated one of the most crucial nurturing behaviors of a mother bear!

He was no longer just a feeder; he was one step closer to being a true caregiver!

Emptied of its body, December also evidently felt an unprecedented comfort.

All unease and resistance disappeared, replaced by extreme relaxation.

Like a melting marshmallow, it nestled in Lin Yu’an’s arm, motionless, even letting out a small yawn of contentment.

Lin Yu’an used a new damp cotton pad to clean the fur around December’s tail. Holding the utterly relaxed December, he walked back to the warm shelter.

He did not forget his most important scientific task, picking up the tri-proof electronic recorder, and solemnly writing a new entry in the day’s behavioral log.

This time, he recorded in exceptional detail:

[Scientific Data Record]

Date: December 02

Time: 12:45 PM

Event: First artificial assisted excretion.

Urination Record:

Frequency: Once.

Color: Light yellow, clear and transparent.

Odor: No obvious ammonia or abnormal odor.

Assessment: Good hydration status.

Defecation Record:

Frequency: Once.

Color: Mustard yellow.

Consistency: Uniform paste, no granular sensation, no undigested milk curds.

Odor: Normal lactic acid fermentation smell, no sour or fishy odor.

Fecal Occult Blood Test: Negative.

Behavioral Observation: The cub displayed obvious resistance and struggle behavior in the early stage of stimulation (about 2 minutes), issuing protesting sounds.

After continuous comfort and stimulation, it gradually calmed down and completed excretion. Post excretion, the stress behavior completely disappeared, showing relaxation and satisfaction.

Preliminary Conclusion: The digestive system has adapted extremely well to the new professional formula milk powder, with no signs of diarrhea, constipation, or indigestion. will continue to feed according to the current ratio and frequency.

After finishing the record, he looked at the rows of professional and rigorous text on the screen, then at the December already dozing off in his arms, a fatherly smile appeared on his face.

In a moment, this furry little creature seemed to overlap with some scenes deep in his memory.

He remembered when his son was just born, not having a bowel movement for several days, clumsily using a cotton swab dipped in warm water to stimulate him with the same method.

When his son finally had a smooth bowel movement, the immense relief and joy he felt was remarkably similar to the current feeling.

He also thought of his daughter, who always liked to nibble on his finger after drinking milk, then fall asleep in his arms, her long eyelashes like two little brushes.

That satisfied yet dependent look was almost identical to the way December was squinting and sucking on the bottle.

A sudden, yet incredibly intense longing hit him without warning.

Coming to this wilderness had been several dozen days ago, to win the challenge, to survive, he had invested almost all his energy in the struggle with nature.

He suppressed the longing for his family deep within his heart, not daring to touch it lightly because he knew that tender emotion could be a burden on this cold, harsh land.

But at this moment, holding this little life that also needed his care, a corner of that hard shell he had deliberately built melted away quietly.

He began to uncontrollably miss his wife, his son, and daughter; had they grown a lot again...

This time, when he returned, he would certainly not leave them for so long again...

Lin Yu’an gently put December back in the warm sleeping bag, which curled up into a ball and fell asleep almost immediately.

He felt his connection with this little life deepen another layer; he was playing the role of a mother bear in a scientific manner.

From today on, making formula, feeding, measuring temperature, weighing, assisting excretion, recording data... these trivial daily tasks would become his most important tasks in this wilderness.

Looking at its peaceful appearance, Lin Yu’an’s heart was filled with tranquility.

At the same time, he was planning to acquire more fat, as wolves, rabbits, and fish were the types of food he currently had.

From a protein standpoint, his reserves could be considered luxurious, fully at the point of being able to eat at will, with no worries of hunger in the short term.

He analyzed into the camera: ”The protein issue is solved, but that’s just the foundation for survival. In this extremely cold place, real currency is fat.”

”My own body is like a calorie-burning furnace; just maintaining body temperature every day requires thousands of calories.”

”Without enough fat intake, my body will start consuming its own muscle for energy.”

”There’s more than 20 days left before the challenge ends.” His eyes grew sharp, filled with a sense of planning and purpose, ”Therefore, I must acquire new, higher-quality fat.”

He walked to the entrance of the shelter, pushed open the heavy door, and looked toward the distant depths of the needleleaf forest covered in white snow.

”There, the terrain is more complex; maybe larger animals are residing there. Relying only on the small prey at the lake and forest edges is far from enough.”

”I need a bigger target, one that can provide a large amount of fat at once, enough to support me through the remaining time!”

In his mind, images of large animals on this land began to surface, ones that, once successfully captured, meant another step closer to victory.

”There are still many chores to do this afternoon, processing fish, building a smokehouse...”

”Can only wait until tomorrow, when December is asleep, must embark on a long journey, deep into the heart of the forest, to seek... signs of bigger game.”
